Hask – Monoi Oil 18ml – Value:$2.99

This hair oil smells so great.  It is made with monoi, coconut and vitamin e oils. It is also free of sulfates and parabens. Hair oils are one of my favorite items from subscription boxes, especially when they smell as good as this one.

Lauren B. Beauty – Nail Polish in Angeleno – Value: $18.00

This nail polish is vegan friendly and 5-Free.  I don’t think my swatch brings justice to its true beauty.  On my nails it shows as a shimmery cool toned purple.  Two layers is a must, but you’ll need at least three for full opacity. #aintnobodygottimeforthat Anyway, it’s super pretty, so I’ll make some time!

Curl Harmony – Curl Reviver 10ml – Value: $1.00

Not my favorite packaging for testing new hair care products.  I’ve never heard of this UK brand before, and unfortunately the second ingredient is a sulfate.  I’m going to add this into the swap pile. From the packaging, it feels like the consistency is a thick cream. This wouldn’t be enough for all my hair anyway. On the back, it says to use as a daily moisturizer to rejuvenate your curls, and that it’s suitable for all curl patterns.

Butters n Bars – French Green Cucumber Mint Facial Masque 1oz? – Value: $2.00

I was super excited when I opened this mask that seemed filled to the brim.  Sigh! My jar must have shifted a ton during shipping.  I popped a huge air bubble when I stuck my finger in the first time.  Sad.  Well don’t cry, because this mask was amazing!! It smells exactly like spearmint gum.  When you put it on, it’s really thick and dries really fast.  As it dries, you feel the cooling effect from the mint. I love having “at-home” spa nights and this was a perfect addition to my routine. If I could, I’d demand to see more from this brand! It was just that good. I was stalking the BnB website, and OMG, they have oil spritzers, lipstick, hair masques, mango butter!!!, and the list goes on.

Flori Roberts – Luxury Lipstick in Forever Red – Value: $12.75

This hydrating lipstick is paraben and fragrance free. I’ve worn it once, I’m not used to seeing myself with such bold reds, and it was very comfortable on my lips. I reapplied after lunch, but I could have went the entire day without reapplying. I’ve never heard of this brand before, and I wasn’t a fan of this shade, but I’d love to get my hands on some of the other colors to see if the formulation is as good as this one. Did anyone get a different shade this month? Let me know your thoughts down below.

Verdict: I’m quite impressed with We Are Onyx this month.  It’s almost a perfect box.  We received skin, hair, nail, and beauty items.  If you count the hair oil, I have three full sized products and two samples.  The products weren’t listed on the card this month, which is strange.  It makes me curious to what everyone else received.  I’m in love with two items and believe all of the items, even the Curl Reviver, fit the theme they were going for this month.  The estimated retail value is around $37.00.  Not bad, but not great!  I’m hoping for awesome holiday inspired boxes for the next couple of months!

  1. I cancelled this sub earlier this year. I see not much has changed. I foresee Onyx losing a lot of their customers to the Essence box.

  2. Nice box but I would want more bang for my buck.

  3. Glad I cancelled this sub. No regrets.

  4. Super excited there are boxes specifically for WOC! I know a lot of my friends had not great times with other sub boxes that just didn’t have stuff suited to women of color. Do you ever find sulfate free stuff in subs? I always assume the hair care stuff will have cones and sulfates… I guess with the exception of boxes specifically for curly girls.

    • Sometimes they have sulfate-free hair products in their box. They used to have more because they used to only stick to items from small B.O.B.s but now so not much. That’s kinda what happens when you go the cheaper route but it’s not solely their fault. When you have people judging businesses of color harsher, said people cancel their subs faster thus the company has less to work with. And it doesn’t help that other businesses of color are the main companies looking out for customers like us because majority of said companies are smaller thus having higher prices (hence why a box like Onyx can’t be as cheap as Birchbox).
