Universal Yums Subscription Box Review October 2015 - Card

Universal Yums includes a folding card that lists all of the items in the box! They also detail the ingredients of each item on their website.

Universal Yums Subscription Box Review October 2015 - Rusk

Van Der Meulen Rusk (3.5 oz.)

These Dutch crisp breads are baked twice to ensure they’re crunchy all the way through. You can eat them plain, but Universal Yums suggests eating them like the Dutch do by topping them with butter and De Ruijter Bread Sprinkles.

Universal Yums Subscription Box Review October 2015 - Stroopwafel

De Ruyter Chocolate Sprinkles

And here are the sprinkles! They look and taste just like chocolate jimmies. I’d never think of topping toast with something like this, but I have to admit that it’s really tasty!

Kanjers Stroopwafel

I don’t know very much about Dutch snacks, but I am familiar with stroopwafels. The snack consists of gooey caramel sandwiched between two thin waffle cookies. I love the soft and chewy consistency, and the rich flavor is delicious. My only gripe is that Universal Yums didn’t include more than one pack!

Universal Yums Subscription Box Review October 2015 - Mints

King Peppermints

Universal Yums included two types of peppermints in this box, apparently because there’s a Duch peppermint rivalry between King and Wilhelmina! King Peppermints have been made with the same family recipe for over 100 years, they’re subtly minty and sweet.

Wilhelmina Peppermints

Wilhelmina Peppermints look very similar to King Peppermints. They taste pretty similar too, but I think I’m team Wilhelmina.

Universal Yums Subscription Box Review October 2015 - Croky

Croky Paprika Chips

Though most of the items in Universal Yums boxes are sweet, I think I look forward to the savory snacks the most. These paprika chips are very similar in flavor to BBQ chips, and I really enjoyed them. The Dutch are known for dipping their potatoes in mayonnaise, so these chips are something of an unusual treat in The Netherlands.

Bolletje Gouda Domino

I made the mistake of popping one of these sandwiches in my mouth before reading the description or thoroughly checking out the package. I was expecting a fairly traditional wafer cookie- not a savory cheese biscuit! Once the initial shock wore off, however, I warmed up to this unusual snack. I like the subtle, nutty flavor of the gouda, and I think these are a fun take on cheese crackers.

Universal Yums Subscription Box Review October 2015 - Windmill

Dutch Bakery Windmill Cookies

Dutch Windmill Cookies, also known as speculoos or speculaas cookies, are one of my all time favorites. The dough is heavily spiced with cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and cardamom, and I think they’re fantastic alongside tea and coffee.

Universal Yums Subscription Box Review October 2015 - Meller

Meller Caramels

Caramel seems to be a popular candy in many different countries, with only slight variations on the basic recipe. Meller Caramels pair chewy and buttery caramel with a filling of creamy milk chocolate. They’re a delicious twist on a classic.

Droste Pastilles

These Dutch chocolate pastilles are most famous for their packaging, which was first unveiled in 1900. (Unfortunately, the pastilles in this box don’t feature the packaging in question, but Universal Yums did include a photo of it on their info card. You can also see it here.) The advertisement depicts a picture inside a picture, which is now known as the “Droste effect.” Here’s a fun example of it.

Universal Yums Subscription Box Review October 2015 - Advocaat

Van Melle Advocaat Toffees

Advocaat is a drink made from sugar, eggs, vanilla, cream, and brandy. It’s similar to eggnog, and that’s exactly what these chews taste like. They’re creamy and have a nice spice.

Rademaker Coffee Hopjes

Coffee candies are another treat that regularly pop up in boxes from Universal Yums. (Unsurprising, since coffee is popular all around the world!) These Rademaker Coffee Hopjes are sweet with a nice coffee flavor. I’m a fan.

Universal Yums Subscription Box Review October 2015 - Napoleon

Napoleon Black and White Licorice Balls

Salty black licorice is really popular in The Netherlands and Scandinavia. The flavor is usually a little too intense for my palate, and these black licorice balls are no exception.

Napoleon Raspberry Wineballs

These sour raspberry candies, on the other hand, are right up my alley! They’re filled with a fizzy powder, and they’re really tasty.

Universal Yums Subscription Box Review October 2015 - Next

On the back of the information card, Universal Yums provides a clue to the next month’s destination. When I read this one, I immediately started humming this. I think it’s pretty safe to assume that next month’s box will feature snacks from Korea!

Verdict: I enjoyed this box from Universal Yums, and I had a lot of fun trying snacks from The Netherlands. While some snacks, like the salty licorice, didn’t blow me away, I loved the Stroopwaffels, Advocaat Chews, and Windmill cookies. I think Universal Yums does a great job of curating treats from a different country each month, and I have so much fun discovering new foods from around the world. I’m looking forward to next month’s box, and I’m excited to see what types of snacks will be featured!

Does anyone sub to the Yum box? Is it just some of the snacks from the Yum Yum size? I’d like to sub but can’t afford the larger one so I’m curious…

Have fallen totally in love with this box (and also with two other treat boxes that have been recently reviewed here)…. It’s fun and addictive to be able to discover foods and information about differenet countries especially when you’re unable to do much traveling yourself! I didn’t learn about this box and join until the Japan box happened so my only true regreat about Universal Yums is that I didn’t know about it from the very beginning and missed out on the Germany (along with several other great countries) box. If you’d told me a year ago, that by this time this year that I would have cancelled all but one of my beauty boxes in order to subscribe to treat boxes, I would have busted out with laughter!!!! However, that is exactly what I’ve done…

Love this box! And every one I have gotten from UY! Every month is a new taste adventure and a chance to travel through taste. So much fun! You may not like or love the taste of every item, but the whole point is to try something new. They even give a fun warning that an item may be a tad weird. Figures- I end up loving a lot of the weird ones! I can’t wait for this month but I say that every month! They once posted the number of countries to “travel” to and my goal is to live long enough to make that full round, plus a second trip around the World or two!

Definitely believe this needed more stroopwaffels!

I’ve enjoyed trying snacks from around the world, but I’m getting a little tired with Universal Yums for now. We’re holding out for the Korean box this month, but after that I think we’ll switch to Japan Crate for a while. I wish UY had a “pause” option so that I didn’t have to cancel and then resub when I inevitably go back to it.

They keep all your info on file so the unsub/resub process is really quick. It’s like a pause.

While I love my Universal Yums…. I have insanely enjoyed the two months that I’ve gotten Candy German (the chocolate is like no other that I’ve ever had) and also after reading the review here for the Treats box (trytreats dot com) I joined last month for their 3rd box which was Croatia/Serbia and that box was amazingly packed! I missed out on the Japan for the 1st month & then Korea for the 2nd month but have seen that they each were also filled to the brim. Don’t have any idea what country is for this month but did get tracking that it’s on it’s way to me! Hope that gives you a couple of ideas to check into………

Lindsay – any chance you’re from MA/New England? I’ve only heard fellow MA’ers refer to sprinkles as “jimmies” – I’m a west coast transplant and people look at me totally cross eyed when I refer to sprinkles that way!

I’ve never heard of jimmies (I’m from Iowa) – when I read the review, I thought that’s what the Dutch name for them was. Wasn’t until I read the comments that I realized you call sprinkles “jimmies”
Very interesting… learn something new everyday!
I’m IN LOVE with stroopwafels after the popsugar box – I need to find more of them!
And as always, I love reading your reviews Lindsay.

I’m from NJ/NY and always called them jimmies too. But jimmies are specific – it’s the long, sort of soft ones like in this sub, either in chocolate or rainbow. The round (or other shape) crunchy ones are not jimmies, they are just sprinkles. So maybe jimmies are a subset of sprinkles?
I’ve since lived in other states and in some places people look at me like I’m an alien when I say jimmies. 🙂

Laurie

+1 for jimmies!! (Boston here!)
