Taste Trunk Subscription Review November 2015 - 3

The trunk arrived in a priority mail box from USPS, and I could immediately tell the thing was packed full!  I couldn't wait to get into it!  Once I opened the outer packaging; I found the 'trunk'...they already get an A+ for packaging from me!

Taste Trunk Subscription Review November 2015 - 4

This month's theme was Beer and Bourbon, and they stuck to the theme very well!  Every item included fit the theme, and I could see why they included it.  I also appreciated the mixture of sweet and salty!

Whiskey Pepper Steak Sauce - $5.99

Napa Jack's Bourbon BBQ & Grill Sauce - $8.80

This steak sauce is MSG, corn syrup, and artificial flavor free.  They describe it as smoky, peppery, savory yet sweet, and recommend using it on steak (obviously!), burgers, fries, and eggs.  I've never thought to use steak sauce on eggs, but since I don't make steak (or burgers) very often, I might just have to try it on scrambled eggs!

This BBQ & Grill sauce is gluten free and all natural.  They use oak barrel aged bourbon to make the sauce, and recommend using this as a condiment or to brush it on while grilling or roasting.  I tend to like BBQ sauce on my baked potatoes, so those are on the menu for later this week so we can try this!

Beer Kissed Caramel Sauce - $8.46

Amber Beer Mustard - $7.52

I started thinking about what edible vehicle I had in the house to put this caramel on to try it.  No ice cream...no homemade cookies...AH!  Oreos?  Nah, too old.  (I need to clean out my pantry...and go grocery shopping apparently.)  Finally I settled on a chocolate mug cake (I have a decent recipe, but of course, a real chocolate cake would be world's better.), whipped it up, and drizzled the caramel on top.  Topped it with whipped cream, and dug in!  OH MY WORD.  People.  This caramel sauce is the business.  It definitely has the layers of taste thing going on.  At first, I thought, "Oh this is good!" Then "Ooh, that flavor is great in here." And then, "This stuff is AMAZING."  They suggest adding it to cream cheese frosting (YUM!) or drizzling on top of a bundt cake (Also yum!).  I will be hoarding and hiding this.  Good thing my husband doesn't like sweets!

I love specialty mustards!  I have quite a few at the moment, and they're all open, so I didn't want to open this one before I finish at least one or two of my others.  I am definitely looking forward to this though!

Beer Micro Brew Peanut Brittle - $6.90

This stuff is delicious!  I don't think I've ever had peanut brittle that tastes like this, but it is excellent!  I don't really taste any beer in the flavoring.  I shared some with a coworker as well, and she didn't taste the beer either:  that's a good thing for me, I can't imagine that I would love a peanut brittle that tasted strongly of beer.  This would have been absolutely the best topping for my chocolate mug cake, chopped up and sprinkled on top, but I left it at work.  Sad face.

If you're looking for candy that tastes like beer, this isn't it - but if you're a peanut brittle fan, I absolutely recommend trying this brand!

The verdict:  I really enjoy getting this box.  Everything I've received so far have been things I would pick up from Trader Joe's if I was just moseying around on a Saturday (my favorite past time:  wandering around food).  This Taste Trunk has a value of $37.67.  Obviously, the value is a little under the cost of the box.  For me, the curation was worth it this month.  Everything fit the theme (unlike some boxes...I wonder why certain popular boxes even release theme spoilers...they rarely fit), and I was introduced to new brands that I am interested in trying more items from.  I hope that they can continue to keep the value of the boxes at, or above the cost, so I am curious to see what the next few boxes look like!

What is your favorite item from this month's Taste Trunk?

Bekki first discovered subscription boxes in 2014 and they quickly took over her life! (Not quite, but pretty close.) She started with POPSUGAR Must Have, then moved to Little Lace Box, Birchbox, Hamptons Lane...the rest was history. Her favorite product find is Beekman 1802 Fudge (so, so good) and her favorite boxes are Birchbox and Hamptons Lane...but she's always looking for a new subscription to try!

I got a few Taste Trunk items with their Groupon deal. While I have liked what I’ve gotten, the customer service is awful! They didn’t ship two items in my trunk and I had to hound them for two weeks before they finally sent it out. Last week I ordered some pancake mix, and they sent the wrong one. When I contacted them, they informed me that the one I ordered was out of stock and offered to refund me the money (but they wouldn’t refund me the whole amount). I’ve also been comparing their prices with other online sites and I have found that they really increase their prices.

Stay away (just based on my personal experience)!

Oh wow! Thank you for that info – I’ve not had to contact their Customer Service, so I didn’t know there were issues!

I’m not sure! I will try to remember to check when I get home today and let you know!

I’m curious whether or not the items contain high fructose corn syrup or real sugar.

I quickly glanced at the products, and I didn’t see high fructose corn syrup in any of the ingredients list. The brittle has corn syrup, but I think that’s pretty standard in peanut brittle.
