The Brooklyn Box Subscription Box Review October 2015 - 4

This box didn’t come with an informational brochure or booklet, but it did come with a faux polaroid of (what I am guessing to be) the Brooklyn Bridge and 4 coasters from the Brooklyn Brewery.  The polaroid seemed fitting for a Brooklyn Box!  I’m actually really happy with the coasters as well, because I’ve never gotten around to purchasing coasters for our house.  Cardboard coasters FTW!

Salt of the Earth Bakery – The Chocoholic - $7.00

As soon as I opened this box and saw that pink packaging, I was over the moon.  Liz received “The Cookie” from Salt of the Earth in one of her Hammock Packs and I fell into the internet hole that is the Salt of the Earth bakery’s website.  I wanted everything they have for sale!  For the good of my scale and my bank account, I sadly clicked the little red button that closed the window of happiness…and then…I got my own cookies!  So, I’m sure you can tell I was pleased with this item.

Two Moon Shortbread – Pumpkin Spice – $3.50

This is more than likely lowballing the price of these, but the best I could do was divide the full 16-piece sampler linked, and multiply it by 4 (the amount I received in my box).  These little shortbread bites were delicious!  They tasted like everything pumpkin spice should be in shortbread cookie form.  They did seem to be a bit softer than shortbread I am used to, which is probably due to the water content of the pumpkin.  I would love to try their rosemary sea salt flavor!

Greenpoint Trading Co – All Aboard Herb Seasoning 7 oz. - $9.00

This is the largest bag of seasoning I have ever owned.  Greenpoint describes this seasoning as “…herb seasoning (that) would make any Italian grandmother proud,” and they suggest using it in soups, sauces, and baked dishes.  The herb blend contains garlic, poppy seeds, oregano leaves, black pepper, lemon peel, basil leaves, dill weed, paprika, and marjoram.  I’m tempted to throw this in my favorite tomato sauce next time I make pizza or pasta!

The Jam Stand – Drunken Monkey jam 8 oz. – $8.00

Ok, first I must comment on The Jam Stand’s marketing:  it is perfection.  Their website is hilarious!  Now, on to this jam.  I read the ingredients and doubted:  banana, rum, and lime?  As a jam?  Oh, how I was proven wrong.  This is my favorite thing in this box…it is out of this world.  The flavor is absolutely unexpected as a jam but it works!   I can absolutely see myself repurchasing this along with some of the other jams on the site…raspberry jalapeno?  YES PLEASE!

Midwood Co. Candle – Vetiver 11 oz. - $22?

I couldn’t get the Midwood Candle website to load so I don’t know the actual price of this candle.  I found a few other soy candles online, and kind of took the average to get the estimated price.  This candle is a great size for a subscription box and I LOVE the scent.  I’m really picky with candles because of my allergies and some scents tend to trigger headaches for me.  Thankfully, this one smells amazing and doesn’t aggravate my allergies.  In my opinion, it’s the perfect fall scent; I prefer clean scents opposed to sweet ones, and this is a very clean, fresh scent.

Ryan Cole & the Paper Souls – Soul Girl – $9.99?

I’m guessing again with the price of this CD.  The website listed on their Facebook page isn’t loading, so I couldn’t find much about the CD itself.  I listened to a few of the tracks and it seems a bit too acoustic for my tastes but it is completely fitting for a Brooklyn box!

The Verdict:  My calculated value for this box is $59.49.  They promise an average value of $50, so I would say they met that in this box.  I feel like I got a great introduction to Brooklyn artisans and artists (and the travel bug to get back to NYC as soon as possible…) and the value exceeded the cost of the box.  They included a nice balance of items that was a little heavier on the food side.  This is perfectly fine for me, but might not be for everyone!  I look forward to watching this new box to see what they include for future months!

Bekki first discovered subscription boxes in 2014 and they quickly took over her life! (Not quite, but pretty close.) She started with POPSUGAR Must Have, then moved to Little Lace Box, Birchbox, Hamptons Lane...the rest was history. Her favorite product find is Beekman 1802 Fudge (so, so good) and her favorite boxes are Birchbox and Hamptons Lane...but she's always looking for a new subscription to try!

When I ordered a box on Nov. 1, there was a notice saying people who ordered then would get an October box. But I didn’t get an October box, so I emailed to ask, and was told I’d get the November box and that it would ship on Nov. 15th—and I’d be notified by email that it had shipped. It’s now November 23, and no box and no notification. What’s up with the Brooklyn Box company? Is it still in existence?

I know this is last minute – but you can use code “jammin” at The Jam Stand website for 40% off your purchase – shipping is kinda expensive so it kinda ended up being the same price once shipping was added on

I just bought a few jars for Christmas! Can’t wait to try it!

Although the name for this sub should be “gentrification in a box” lol, I wouldn’t mind trying the pumpkin spice shortbread!

I’m pretty sure the bridge in the polaroid is Manhattan Bridge. I’ve looked at that bridge many times while standing on those rocks. Brooklyn Bridge would be directly behind me!

Yeah, that’s the Manhattan Bridge. You can tell by the way the bottom part (the foundation pillar thingy in the middle; can’t think of what that’s called atm lol) curves out. The BK one is straight all the way down.
It’s easy to get them (the two bridges) confused at this angle because the light makes them both look orange/tan even though the Manhattan one is greenish-blue.

Great review! I’ve lived in Brooklyn all my life and it feels good to see a box like this. Bad thing is, now I’m in search of those cookies!

Amy

Yes, that is the Brooklyn Bridge

Loved your review, and I was interested in subscribing. However, the link to the box includes a phishing scam warning when you follow through. There is also a promo code listed when you click through (BRKLYN5) that does not work. Looks like they have some kinks to work out before it becomes worthwhile to sub.

Bekki

Oh no! Kerry, I’m seeing that now as well. When I wrote the review, the phishing warning wasn’t there…that’s new. Hopefully they get that fixed, because I loved this box!

I messaged them on Facebook about the non-working code. They advised me to use “BKBOX” instead. It works!

Kerry

Thanks for an updated code!

Seems like a fun box! Enjoy 🙂 That looks like the Manhattan bridge to me. It’s neat to see products from the different areas of BKLYN.
