Pupbox Subscription Box Review October 2015 - box

PupBox
4.5 overall rating

PupBox is a monthly subscription box for puppies, focused on development and customized to the age of your dog. PupBox also customizes your box to your dog’s size. Choose small (target adult weight of 0-20 pounds), medium (adult weight 20-60 pounds), large (adult weight 60-100 pounds), or extra large (100+ pounds). This is a review of a box for a four-month-old large puppy.

Good to know: You can subscribe to PupBox for an adult dog, too. The box won’t be age-customized like it would be with a puppy, but they will still send lots of products for your dog to enjoy. Also, mine arrived earlier in the month. I am just running late because I was out of town last weekend!

PupBox sent us this box for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Pupbox Subscription Box Review October 2015 - inside

PupBox encourages lots of sharing of puppy pictures on social media. Although I don’t really do social media, I am totally into puppy pictures. I don’t have a puppy currently, but here is a gratuitous puppy picture from when Nyx was about four months old (according to the date on the file, anyway).

Here’s a first look inside; this was pretty full!

Pupbox Subscription Box Review October 2015 - card2

The information card doesn’t list the items in each box, but is instead educational information relating to your puppy’s developmental stage. So this month’s card had a few tips on training, some discussion of teething, and similar information.

Hugglehounds Rabbit – Value $20 (?)

I couldn’t find this particular toy for sale on their site, though there were lots of similar ones. I’m guessing at the value. This has a layer of netted fabric inside that is supposed to make it more difficult to tear. The netted fabric is neon green. Nyx had this toy for 10 minutes and let’s just say I was picking up neon green after her the next day. She also ate the tail right off. At any rate, it’s important to supervise your puppy with new toys and take them away if they become too damaged. And Nyx is a champion foreign object eater from way back.

Dogswell Super Boost for Immunity Support Sweet Potato with Beef Broth Veggie Chews (5 oz) – Value $6.99

These are free of common allergens like corn, wheat, soy, and gluten, and are made in the USA! They’re also free of artificial colors and flavors.

Superior Farms Pet Provisions 12” Pizzle Stick - $7.99

Superior Farms pet products are made in the USA and are always grain and gluten free. I’m sure Nyx would love this if she wasn’t still on a hypoallergenic diet for her IBD. This should satisfy a puppy’s need to chew, but of course be sure to supervise your dog with any new item like this.

Pupcicle Frozen Teething Aid – Value $10.99

You put water in this and freeze it, and then it’s soothing for teething puppies. I remember dealing with teething puppies more than once and any help is definitely appreciated at that stage.

Gnawsome Squeak and Light Ball (small) – Value $2.99

If you throw this and it hits the floor, it’ll light up. It’s a bit too small to give to Nyx at this stage in her life, so I will probably find a neighbor to pass it on to. Or I will let my cats play with it. I think it’s a good choice for a puppy, at any rate.

Primal Turkey Liver Munchies (2 oz) – Value $8.99

These are basically just freeze dried turkey liver. You can break them into smaller bits for training if you like. You can also feed them to cats, which is what I’m going to do since one of my cats is a turkey lover. What I like about these is that they have only a single ingredient and they’re grain free. Much less likely to provoke an allergy or immune response than a lot of commercial treats out there!

Pupbox Subscription Box Review October 2015 - nyx

Nyx, enjoying the rabbit. Does she ever know how to pick the weakest part of a toy and start destroying it, or what?

Verdict: I calculated a value of $57.95 for the October 2015 PupBox. That’s a pretty good value for a pet box, even if you allow for my estimation of the rabbit toy to be wrong. It’s more than double the price of one month of a 12-month subscription, which is wonderful!

Overall, I’m happy with this box. There’s a good selection of hypoallergenic and single ingredient treats, the toys are definitely going to be of interest to a four-month-old puppy, and the value is great.

Thanks! (If I get down on the floor and take about 30 pictures, I can usually get at least one worthy of including in a review here.)

I don’t know, $40 per month?? Seems a bit crazy high. I’m a member of pettreater.com after dropping barkbox for being overpriced for what you get. I’m EXTREMELY happy with PetTreater($25/mo), and was looking to a couple more to compare but I don’t think I’ll give this a try, even with the coupon.
