Hamptons Lane Subscription Box Review & Coupon October 2015 - Boil

Gullah Gourmet Crab & Shrimp Boil- $8.95

A “Coastal Seafood Boil” box wouldn’t be complete without a spice blend to make your own seafood boil! Gullah Gourmet has been featured on Food Network, Southern Living, and Everyday with Rachael Ray, and their spice mix is a blend of mustard seed, ground mustard, allspice, coriander, crushed red pepper, lemon peel, and crushed bay leaves.

Hamptons Lane Subscription Box Review & Coupon October 2015 - Crackers

Lobster Claw Shellfish Crackers- $4.52

I don’t own seafood crackers, so these are a welcome addition to my kitchen. I like the bright color and kitchy design.

Hamptons Lane Subscription Box Review & Coupon October 2015 - Vinegar

Back Forty Beer Co. Beer Vinegar- $8

This beer vinegar is a take on classic British malt vinegar, and it’s made from Back Forty’s award-winning Truck Stop Honey Brown Ale. They recommend incorporating it into barbeque sauces and marinades, using it as a dipping sauce for freshly steamed or boiled crab, and as a condiment for fish & chips.

Hamptons Lane Subscription Box Review & Coupon October 2015 - Skimmer

6" Bamboo Skimmer- $4.79

I already own a skimmer, but I much prefer the style of this one. I like the bamboo handle and wide mesh basket.

Hamptons Lane Subscription Box Review & Coupon October 2015 - Picks

Norpro Seafood Picks- $5.25

These seafood picks have a fork on one end and a little spoon on the other, which makes it easy to pick and slide crab and lobster meat from shells.

Hamptons Lane Subscription Box Review & Coupon October 2015 - Magic

Spiceologist Black Magic- $11.95

Spiceologist’s Black Magic Seasoning is a Cajun-inspired mix of sweet paprika, spicy cayenne, garlic, and herbs. It can be used to season seafood, chicken, and vegetables.

Hamptons Lane Subscription Box Review & Coupon October 2015 - Aioli

Terrapin Ridge Farms Chipotle Aioli- $7.50

This aioli from Terrapin Ridge Farms is seasoned with chipotle peppers and a blend of spices. Hamptons Lane suggests using it as a dipping sauce for fish & chips, in crab dip, or as a seasoning for lobster rolls.

Seafood Snacks!

Every month, Hamptons Lane provides recipes to accompany their box. I’ve had a lot of luck with the Hamptons Lane recipes, and I always look forward to making them. For this month’s seafood theme, I decided to make Salty Fried Oysters with Chipotle Aioli and Beer Vinegar Fish and Chips.

Recipe #1- Salty Fried Oysters with Chipotle Aioli

Hamptons Lane Subscription Box Review & Coupon October 2015 - OystersRecipe

My husband LOVED the look of this recipe, so we decided we had to try it. We eat oysters out occasionally, but I’ve never prepared them at home before. Regardless, we confidently picked out our oysters from the shellfish counter at the grocery store. It wasn’t until we got home and started prepping for dinner that we realized neither of us had shucked an oyster before!

Despite the fact that we don’t own a shucking knife or thick oyster shucking gloves, we decided to take on the shells with a couple of paring knives. We managed to get into most of them, but I wouldn’t try it again without the proper equipment. We walked away without any serious injuries, but I’ll just say that I now understand why shuckers wear thick gloves!

Once we’d gotten into the oysters, we dipped them in egg and then in crunched up saltine crackers and fried them for a minute on each side.

I wasn’t sure whether I’d like the saltine cracker crust, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was really tasty! The crackers formed a nice crunchy coating, and the oysters themselves were soft and perfectly cooked. As suggested, we dipped them in the Chipotle Aioli, which was truly delicious. The smoky, rich flavor was an excellent accompaniment to the crunchy oysters.

Recipe #2- Beer Battered Fish and Chips

Hamptons-September-2015-FishRecipe

Being from Britain, my husband considers himself to be an authority on fish & chips. It’s not something that he eats regularly here in the US, but he insisted that we give this recipe a try to see whether it could stand up to his high standards.

We began by slicing Idaho potatoes into long strips and frying them.

We fried them in several batches, and I sprinkled each batch with a little Black Magic right when they came out of the oil.

Hamptons-September-2015-FishFries

When the chips were fried and ready, we dipped strips of haddock (the recipe called for cod, but my grocery store was out) into a batter made from flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, pepper, club soda, vinegar, and lager and fried them at 375.

Hamptons-September-2015-FishFrying

The battered fish came out beautifully! I plated it alongside the chips and some of the Chipotle Aioli for dipping, and we sat down for dinner.

Hamptons-September-2015-FishPlated

I couldn’t believe how well the fish turned out. It was crispy on the outside, flaky on the inside, and had fantastic flavor. The Black Magic seasoning gave the fries a nice kick, and the Back Forty Beer Vinegar added zing. My husband loved everything, too, and declared this meal to be “the best fish & chips ever!” (He even took a note of the recipe to send to his friends back home!)

Verdict: I look forward to Hamptons Lane every month, and I love that each box helps subscribers create a unique dining experience. This month’s “Coastal Seafood Boil” box was fantastically curated, and I’m impressed with the Beer Vinegar, Chipotle Aioli, and Black Magic. The recipes I tried this month blew me away, and I’m already excited to make them again. (Though, I’ll definitely pick up some new equipment before I attempt to shuck another oyster at home.) In terms of value, my estimates put the total cost of the items in this box at just over $50. That’s pretty low for Hamptons Lane, but it exceeds the $47 cost of the box. Despite the lower than average value, this box was still a hit for me. I can’t stop thinking about the delicious fried fish and yummy Chipotle Aioli!
