Ashi Box Subscription Box Review October 2015 - card1

The October Ashi Box had two double-sided information cards in it. One card listed the items in the box and gave a bit of information on each.

Another side gave more information about the holiday of Diwali, the goddess Lakshmi, and some ways to celebrate Diwali.

Ashi Box Subscription Box Review October 2015 - card3

There were also notes and photos of Lakshmi-inspired yoga poses. Wheel pose (the last one) is not currently part of my skill set but I am doing a round of P90X and hopefully that will build up my upper body strength so I can attempt wheel!

And finally, we have more information on Lakshmi, including a mantra and a meditation. And now on to the items!

Ashi Box Subscription Box Review October 2015 - candle

Unscented Soy Candle by Illumination Studios - $2

Rangoli-Inspired Quilled Candle Holder by A Latte Joy - $15

Rangoli is a folk art from India that is often created during festivals such as Diwali. The candle holder is just the right size to put around the included candle. I really like the detail work and I’m glad they included a candle of the appropriate size for the holder! It’s a little bigger than a tealight and a little smaller than a votive.

Ashi Box Subscription Box Review October 2015 - chocolate

Wei of Chocolate (2 chocolates) – Value $3

These were a Himalayan sea salt flavor and they were very good. Wei of Chocolate has its own subscription service, which is described in a little more detail in the included foldout card. You can also buy smaller tubes to see which flavor of chocolate is your favorite!

Ashi Box Subscription Box Review October 2015 - lakshmi

Brass Lakshmi Statue – Value $10 (?)

Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of spiritual and material wealth and prosperity. I’ve photographed this in my hand for size reference. The value is a complete guess as I am not sure of the original source of this statue and prices for such things online vary widely. I have given this a place in my yoga/exercise room where it will be safe from cats!

Ashi Box Subscription Box Review October 2015 - mala

Rudraksha and Rose Quartz Mala Bracelet from Rising Sol Journeys – Value $27

I have several rudraksha malas thanks to subscription boxes but I don’t have one quite like this yet. Rudraksha seeds are supposed to increase contentment and aid in meditation practice, and rose quartz is connected to the heart chakra. These rudraksha seeds are from India and have been dipped and blessed in the Ganges River.

Ashi Box Subscription Box Review October 2015 - notebook

Rangoli-Inspired Notebook – Value $10 (?)

This notebook (including the paper inside) is handmade in India. I am trying to think of something special to use it for. Again, the value is a total guess as I couldn’t find anything quite like this online.

Ashi Box Subscription Box Review October 2015 - sari

Recycled Varanasi Silk Sari – Value $10 (?)

This is an “upcycled” piece of fabric from a silk sari. Pink is a color associated with Lakshmi. I have opted to use this for home decor as it is a bit too small to be a scarf and several of the edges are unfinished. But it looks very nice on top of a half-bookshelf with some of my collected items from India, Tibet, and Nepal on top.

Ashi Box Subscription Box Review October 2015 - soap

Pacha Soap in “Pocket Full of Cozy” – Value $6

I wish I would’ve photographed this outside of the box because it is quite pretty and has lavender buds embedded in it. This is handmade in Nebraska and it smells wonderful.

Verdict: I calculated a value of a little over $70 for the October 2015 Ashi Box. Granted, some of the values for the items were complete guesses. But I certainly think the value is there, even if some of my estimates were incorrect. Plus, I think everything was thoughtfully curated and I loved that the box included some exclusive and/or hard-to-find items. I could also see the curator’s enthusiasm in the amount of written material that accompanied the box.

Personally, as an Indian person, the prices are inflated a bit, but it’s still a cute informative box. If it’s a Diwali box, I would expect oil lamps in the mix. The quilled item is unique, but $15 is too much.
