Urthbox included a card with information about how to earn member points. This box also contained a coupon code for Kickers (read on to see the Kickers products that are featured in this month’s box).
Sea Salt & Butter Poplets (2.7 oz)- $1.50
Poplets are the baked centers of corn kernels. They look a little like the half-popped kernels at the bottom of a popcorn bowl, but they’re crunchy without being too hard. The sea salt and butter flavor is delicious, and I’m pleased to discover that Poplets were named Shape Magazine’s 2013 Snack Award Winner. It’s good to see that, in addition to being delicious, they’re fairly healthy.
Barnana Organic Coconut Banana Bites (100 g.)- $4
I’ve tried Barnana snacks before. (Actually, I think I may have received them in a previous Urthbox.) The chewy banana bites are high in potassium and have a nice banana flavor. They’re a slightly disturbing shade of brown, but Barnana makes it clear on their packaging that this is normal and natural.
Mamma Chia Blackberry Bliss Chia Squeeze (3.5 oz.)- $1.49
This “vitality snack” is made from organic chia, fruits, and vegetables. I’m a little obsessed with chia seeds, and I like taking squeeze snacks with me when I’m hiking. So, I’m going to set this aside to bring with me on my next outdoor trek. I’m looking forward to trying it. It gets great reviews on Amazon.
Liz Lovely Snicker Dude Cookie (90 g.)- $5
Liz Lovely cookies are gluten-free, vegan, kosher, and non-GMO. The company seems to have a great ethos, but, sadly, I’m not a fan of this cookie. The texture is more cake-like than cookie-like, and the texture doesn’t really work for me. I was also a little shocked to see that each cookie contains a whopping 400 calories.
Almond Blueberry Lemon Frontier Bites (20 g.)- $1.20
I’ve tried Frontier bites before, and I’m a fan. The bar is kind of like a cross between a granola bar and a rice krispy treat. It’s only 100 calories, and the lemon flavor is nicely pronounced.
Strawberry Banana Kickers (two 8 g. packets)- $2
This all-natural powdered fruit blend can be used to sweeten and add flavor to oatmeal, pancakes, cereal, ice cream, and yogurt. This is one of those products that I didn’t realize existed, and I’m not sure how I’ll decide to use it. I tried a little on the back of my hand, and I’m pleased to report that the flavor is really nice. It tastes a little like crushed freeze-dried fruit.
Verdict: This month’s Urthbox is a hit for me, and the Poplets might just be my new favorite snack! The value for this box comes in over $15, which is great if you pre-pay for a six-month subscription to receive a discounted rate. (For the mini box I received, the cost per month is either $17.99, with a month-to-month subscription, or $12.99, with a six-month subscription. Note, however, that it looks like 3 and 6-month subscriptions must be paid in full at the time of subscribing. Up front, the cost of a 6-month subscription to the mini box is $77.)
Still, I think it’s important to point out that I’ve seen drastic swings in value between boxes (anywhere from $6 to almost $15). A number of subscribers have also reported problems with Urthbox customer service like double billing, unresponsiveness, trouble cancelling, etc. While I haven’t personally had any problems with Urthbox, the reports give me pause. Even though I really like what I received in this month’s box, I think it’s important to consider these issues before subscribing.
