Paw Pack Subscription Box Review August 2015 - box

PawPack
4.7 overall rating
15 Ratings | 11 Reviews

PawPack is a monthly subscription box for dogs or cats. This is a review of the “large” dog box. (PawPack customizes your box to your dog’s size – my dog, Nyx, weighs 82 pounds (she has lost a lot of weight due to an illness). You can see Liz’s review of a past PawPack for small dogs here, although it appears they’ve revamped their subscription model a bit in the past few months.) PawPack focuses on eco-friendly, organic, and natural items for your pet.

PawPack sent us this box for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Here’s a look inside the box. As with the last PawPack I reviewed, this was heavy on treats and light on toys.

There wasn’t a list of products in the box, but a card detailing some of PawPack’s charity efforts was included.

Paw Pack Subscription Box Review August 2015 - bowl

ZippyPaws Small Travel Bowl – Value $4.99

Nyx is on medication that makes her extra thirsty so we will be taking this to her vet appointments, along with a bottle of water. (This item wasn’t on the ZippyPaws website although they do have a larger bowl available there. But I did find this on Amazon.)

Off Leash Smokey Beef Grain Free Dog Treats (5.29 oz) – Value $5.99

Sadly, Nyx has recently been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease and can’t eat any dog treats (at all). But I have no shortage of neighbors, coworkers, and family members with dogs who will enjoy these! I appreciate that they’re made in Canada and grain free.

ZippyPaws “Brainey” Lion Plush Toy – Value $7.99

Nyx loves plush toys so this was a hit. Of course she destroyed it pretty quickly, but she sure enjoyed it while she had it:

Paw Pack Subscription Box Review August 2015 - treats

Tucker’s Chicken and Bacon Treats for Dogs from Raw Basics (1 treat) – Value $1.59

PawPack doesn’t customize boxes for dogs with allergies, but they do promise to minimize common allergens. They rarely include chicken, according to their FAQ, and they include grain-free treats and chews when possible. This is one of the few treats with chicken I’ve seen from them. It’s individually-wrapped, which is great, and made in Wisconsin.

Complete Natural Nutrition Cheese Please (1.7 oz) – Value $5.99

The website for this product shows picture of people eating these but I can’t quite bring myself to do it…The only ingredient is cheese and if you are into sharing treats with your dog, these should work pretty well.

Verdict: I calculated a value of approximately $26.55 for the August 2015 PawPack box. That’s about what the box costs per month if you buy a yearly subscription, but it’s about $10 under the price of a month-to-month subscription. I think the mix of items is good, but I really wish there had been another item or two to round out the box value. If you are really into natural, eco-friendly dog items, and can find a coupon code and/or commit to a yearly subscription, you might like PawPack. If you are looking for maximum value, however, you may want to try a different subscription.

I got a PawPack annual subscription through a Groupon deal. I am a few boxes in now.

Can you please note in your future reviews that while there is dog size customization, they can not currently customize toys for dog size? They only have large size dog toys and the dog size is used for the bully stick/chew size. This is per numerous email exchanges I’ve had with them as I have a very small dog and they have not been able to provide me with a time frame of when this may change.

I had a meh experience with PawPack. I posted about it on the April 2015 review. I do not like feeling negative, but the value of the box (for the monthly price) just was not there for me.

Additionally, I ordered a cat box and a dog box. The dog box shipped with no problems, but the cat box was delayed and I had to email about it and then there was no shipping information until I emailed again.

I really wanted to love this box, but it was not meant to be.

Yay for gratuitous doggie pics! 😀

This box consistently sends non-treat, non-toy products. The first box I got from them included poop bags with a dispenser that attaches to your leash. Second box included a toothbrush and meat-flavored toothpaste (LOL). The toys tend to be misses for me, as I have a super destructive dog, but I really enjoy that this box includes items that I either didn’t know existed or wouldn’t buy myself. And it’s actually pretty easy to swap the plush dog toys on the swap site 😀

P.S. What a fantastic photo! Best wishes to Nyx that she feels better soon!

Melissa,
Thank you for commenting about the variety included. I am in for 4 more months with BB (and my doggy likes it), so hopefully Ragan reviews more of this sub during that time. When our BB is up, I’ll be able to make a more informed choice between the two.

I don’t know much about your dog, but you should also look at the reviews of Pooch Party Packs. I think that is my favorite dog box so far.

Nyx is a beautiful dog! She looks really sweet in that photo.

Best wishes on figuring out how to manage her condition.

Thanks. Right now Nyx is doing OK. But she is taking 26 pills a day. (That is not an exaggeration, sadly, though we may be able to reduce the number soon…) And she is on a super-expensive canned food. I’ll take that over the IBD symptoms any day, though.

P.S. Thanks for not mentioning my awesome 1970s sofa…(it used to belong to my grandparents and is older than I am).

I can buy comparable items for $15, and write a $20 check to an animal charity. Result – same expense to me, better fit for my pets, and a bigger donation to the charity. Based on this review, I’ll pass on this sub.

I hope that Nyx gets better! She looks so happy with her toy before she killed it though 🙂

Ragan,
I hope you’re able to minimize NYX’s inflammation. Poor puppy!
I love the inclusion of something neither treat nor toy. The collapsible water bowl would come in handy for us. There are so many other items needed or made for convenience that go with owning a pet. Why don’t these boxes expand on that?
Overall, I think this box is expensive. I wish I could read the card that mentions their charity efforts. That might add to the value of the box for me. Another appealing aspect of PawPack is the grain free and minimal commen allergen ingredients. The Rowsdower has food allergies and could end up itching and itching and itching from the wrong treats.
Currently I sub to BarkBox. It’s a lower price point and somewhat equivalent in contents. I’m on my second month of a six month sub with them and I’m satisfied. The only improvement I’d like to see is the addition of items like the water dish, or poop bags, shampoo samples, nail clippers, brushes, ear cleaners, water additives for healthy teeth, etc.

Nyx is on prednisone right now for her IBD. It seems to be working for the inflammation but it has side effects so we are trying to find the minimum effective dose!

I almost never get poop bags in dog boxes and that’s one thing I would totally use.

BarkBox was a little bit of a miss for me. The toys were really too small for a large breed dog and they didn’t seem to grasp just how destructive a true heavy chewer can be. However, my last Rottie would’ve been OK with the BarkBox toys, so I guess it depends somewhat on the dog.
