Mango Coconut Shortbread Tea Mates by Silk Shortbread (6 cookies)- $3.50
Orange Glad regularly sends shortbread cookies, so I’ve come to expect that most boxes will contain them. These are made with dried mango, coconut, and almond extract. I love that the cookies are cut into small, round bites, and I’m a fan of their flavor. Just as the name suggests, I think they’d be perfect served alongside a cup of tea!
Key Lime Coolers by Byrd's Famous Cookies (1.5 oz.)- $1.50*
Having been raised in Florida, I will always have a place in my heart for Key Lime Cookies (and Conch Fritters). These are really tasty, and they definitely bring back fond memories of childhood trips to Key West. I also love the colorful box, and I think it would make a great gift.
(*Note: I can’t find this exact box for sale on the Byrd website. The per pound price listed on the Byrd website breaks down to $1.50, but I imagine this box would retail for a bit more.)
Original & Salted Caramel Snack Pack from Three Kids and a Kitchen (2 candies)- $1.10
I love caramels (especially salted ones), so this is a welcome addition to the box for me. The caramels are great (and VERY sticky), but I wish they were marked so I could distinguish between the flavors without having to taste them.
Julian's Recipe Liege Style Belgian Waffle (1 waffle)
Orange Glad suggests microwaving this waffle for 15 seconds before eating it, and I’m so glad they do. (I took a small nibble before microwaving, and it was a little tough.) After 15 seconds in the microwave, it turned into a soft, warm treat. Also, it’s covered in pearlized sugar, which adds a delightful sugary crunch.
Donsuemor Lemon Zest Madelines (1 cookie)- $.58
I believe I’ve seen Donsuemor products available at Costco before. While I have no problem with Costco (I shop there regularly), I tend to expect Orange Glad to feature products from small, boutique bakeries. While I like Donsuemor Madelines, I’m a little disappointed to see them in my box. If a bakery is selling at Costco, I don’t really classify them as small.
Verdict: For the most part, I enjoyed this month’s OrangeGlad’s Sweet Box. I like the variety of items selected for August, and I think they’re all tasty. I never expect the value of Orange Glad boxes to be that high, but the value of this box seems to be even lower than usual. Most months, it’s easy for me to justify the low value because I think Orange Glad does a great job introducing me to tasty products from small bakeries across the country. It’s a lot harder to overlook, however, when one of the items is available in bulk at my local big box store. Next month, I hope Orange Glad is a little more discerning with their selections. Discovering new small, artisanal bakeries in one of my favorite things about this subscription.
