Clean Bar Box Subscription Box Review - July 2015 - box

Clean Bar Box is a subscription box that delivers you handmade artisan soaps that are free from preservatives, animal products, petroleum derivatives, parabens, and sodium lauryl sulfate. It looks like they got customized outer boxes this month!

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

The Box: Clean Bar Box

The Cost: $14.99 (monthly; four 2.5 ounce bars), $19.99 (monthly; two 5 ounce bars and two 2.5 ounce bars), $19.99 (every other month; two 5 ounce bars and two 2.5 ounce bars). Save with 6- and 12-month subscriptions.

The Products: Four new scents of seasonally-inspired soap every month. All ingredients are sourced in the USA and handmade in Indiana.

Clean Bar Box Subscription Box Review - July 2015 - contents

This is a review of the large box, which you can purchase on a monthly or every other month basis.

Ships to: US (free).

Note: Lots of other countries are available in the drop-down list in the sign-up window. I can’t tell how to calculate shipping for those countries, though. I’d suggest e-mailing them if you are interested and live outside the US.

Check out the Beauty Subscription Box Directory for more great bath- and spa-oriented subscriptions!

Clean Bar Box Subscription Box Review - July 2015 - large

Wildflowers Soap (5 oz.) – Value $6.99

Lemon Coconut Soap (5 oz.) – Value $6.99

The wildflowers soap is quite floral and feminine. For some reason, I can’t quite place the fragrance (that is, I’m not sure which florals I’m picking out). It’s a nice scent for a bath and body product, though.

I couldn’t find the lemon coconut soap on the Clean Bar Box site, so I based the pricing on other 5 oz. bars in their store and linked to their order page. (All the 5 oz. bars come in earth-friendly cardboard boxes.) This one smells like something I would want to eat. It’s probably my favorite of the bunch.

Peach Tea Scrub Soap (2.5 oz.) – Value $3.49

Stars N’ Stripes Soap (2.5 oz.) – Value $3.49

I think it’s funny how the Peach Tea Scrub Soap description refers to the Georgia sun (click on the link or read the letter in the photo up above). It has been REALLY hot here the past few weeks and I am not looking so fondly upon the Georgia sun lately (especially not two weeks ago when my air conditioning was broken)! But the soap smells good. It’s a little crumbly but it looks like it will make a good scrub, since it has both sea salt and ground oatmeal.

The stars n’ stripes soap is pretty. I don’t mind that it arrived after the 4th of July because I’m just going to use it in the shower rather than put it on display.

I didn’t see any 2.5 ounce bars in the Clean Bar Box shop, so I just divided the price of the 5 ounce bars in half to get a value.

Verdict: I calculated a value of about $21 for the June Clean Bar Box. I am happy with the value since that is just a little higher than the cost of the box and shipping is free. I think they did a great job choosing seasonal scents. I also like that you have the option of buying a smaller box or getting one every other month (they also have soaps for sale individually and a one-time, non-renewing box purchase option). Because you can’t buy these soaps elsewhere, I’m relying on item values from Clean Bar Box’s shop. You’re pretty much always going to get the same value because the way their subscription is set up. Some of the half-size bars would make decent guest bathroom hand soaps, too.

For what it’s worth, once again the soaps strike me as being a little on the feminine side. The scent doesn’t linger for too long on the skin, though. Also, I used one of the large bars from last month’s box in its entirety. It had a lot of blue dye and fragrance in it, but it did not irritate my skin at all, even though my skin is sometimes sensitive. (Of course, your mileage may vary.)

What did you think of the Clean Bar Box? Do you get any soap subscriptions?

Anyone know if the corn and soybean oil they use in the soap is non-GMO?

Hi Melissa,

I believe I spoke with you via email. For anyone else wondering, our soaps are GMO free.

Cheers,

You should e-mail them. I asked a question about ingredients and they were very responsive. (Sorry for the late reply. I moved yesterday and didn’t have internet.)

Giving this box a shot. It’s less per ounce than I pay for Zum soap at Whole Foods.

I like the scents you got in your box. Yet I need a bit of variety besides soaps in different scents in a box. Probably comes from getting to many boxes with soap in it. Not sure if they make lip balms, or body scrubs, or even shower fizzys. Maybe then this box would be more interesting to me.
