Smashbox Full Exposer Mascara – Value $20

This is one of the best mascaras I’ve sampled recently. The formula adds a good amount of length and volume. It took me a lot of brush strokes to get the amount of volume/length I wanted, but there were no clumping issues, so that’s fine by me!

Laura Geller Beauty Bronze-n-Brighten – Value $33

This is one of those products that will last me a very long time – I only needed one sweep of color to get the amount of bronzer I wanted. (I swatched it in the last picture). I’ve always liked Laura Geller baked products, and this bronzer is a very natural looking shade for my skintone.

Oribe Apres Beach Wave and Shine Spray – 1 oz Value $10

This spray adds some texture and it smells fabulous. (One of the reviewers on Birchbox described this spray as overpriced hair perfume!)

dr. brandt microdermabrasion skin exfoliant – .25 oz Value $9.75

This exfoliator has a fresh, citrus scent, and the formula is super fine – you only need to use it once or twice per week.

StriVectin-AR Advanced Retinol Eye Treatment – .17 oz Value $25.50

At first I thought this StriVectin sample looked too small to be able to try for a decent period of time, but since it is an eye cream, this sample is actually a good size. (It’s 1/3 of the full size). This eye treatment targets fine lines, puffiness, and dark circles. Hopefully I’ll be able to see some results before this sample runs out. StriVectin products usually make good on their promises in my experience!

Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Liquid – 10 ml Value $2.30

This is a lightweight formula designed to add moisture to your skin – it goes on before your makeup. (I realize as I read that sentence to myself, I just described pretty much any moisturizer!) Anyway, this one is a liquid, and I like how smooth it left my skin feeling – it could definitely work as a primer alternative.

Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Beso – .05 oz Value $11

All Birchbox subscribers are getting this Liquid Lipstick for July.

The pigment in this formula is insane. Be very careful applying it – because it takes a serious effort to remove it if you make any mistakes! The finish is matte, and it’s a very bold color. Here is a swatch:

Verdict: This box has a value of about $111.55. I’m very happy with that value for the $30 cost. (It’s the best value I’ve received for an Upgraded box yet). I think this is my favorite Upgraded Box so far – I love both of my full-size products, and I’ll use all the samples as well.

  1. Hi! Does anyone know if Birchbox is still sending out the occasional beautyblender in their sub boxes? I want to purchase one but was hoping to receive one in my monthly box first. Knowing my luck, I’ll buy one then get one in my very next box.

  2. I just had an amazing experience with Birchbox customer service.

    It was the first box I signed up for not long after they started and I cancelled in mid-2013 when expanding issues caused poor customer service.

    In June I decided to check out one box again, I also received July. I signed up for the Men’s box for my fiancé and his was okay (nothing spectacular but good).

    However I wasn’t able to pick my sample in time for which stila lip color I got, which wasn’t a huge deal even if I got the one color (Bella) that I can’t wear. However the fiancé wanted the backpack and we clicked it within time and expect that’s the item he would get.

    I just got shipping info and it turns out they’re sending him some pair of underwear. I’m sure they’re fine, but it’s definitely not why we signed him up for the box. I emailed to ask what happened, and they said they would definitely get the backpack out to him, he gets to keep the $29 boxers AND even though I didn’t complain via email about the disappointment in color they are sending me the full trio, which I imagine is the $20 set with the case in this scenario. That’s around $50 of free items to make up for the originally less than stellar customer service.

    I’m willing to put up with a lot from a subscription company, from delays to missing items, etc as long as thei customer service fixes things like mailing missing items or correcting an order. For the first time since late 2012 when I started contemplating canceling the first time I feel very confident that they actually value me as a customer.

  3. I am SOOOOO FRUSTRATED WITH BB! (sorry for the caps…just shouting to the sub box heavens in hopes that it will help or at the very least make me feel better!). I didn’t even receive a June box and when I inquired I was told sorry, we would send you another one (since mind apparently fell off of the planet), but they are sold out. So, let me get this straight…you have a gazillion samples, and can’t just throw something together for my June box? Every single box I’ve received (and not only June has gone missing, I believe my Feb and or March boxes were no shows, as well) hasn’t even shown up until the second week of the following month. I’ve always loved this sub…I never had any problems with it until the beginning of this year. I’m an ACE and spend a lot in their shop since I live on an island in the middle of nowhere and have zero shopping availability locally. I’m very disappointed in BB right now. Anyone else out there having any trouble?

    • I actually believe that they sold out for June. I think it was because of all the $1 subscriptions. I unwittingly started a gift subscription in June, instead of July as I meant to, and the box they sent me was the wedding box, even though I specifically did not select that. While they most likely did not run out of samples, they may very well have run out of boxes.

      I’m really sorry for your problems, perhaps they are related to living in an island in the middle of nowhere?

      • I live in a landlock state and had the same problem when a previous box was lost in the mail. I was told they sod out. I had the same feeling. Throw samples in a box and send it to me.

        I hope next month makes up for it!

    • My July BB box was sent to an address about 2 hours from me. They claim it was a change of address on the post offices part (my postman vehemently denies this). Unsure where the mistake was made. While I was very impressed each time I have contacted customer service, I too was totally disappointed they were unable to replace the box or any items in it. I really was looking forward to the Stila liquid lipstick. I appreciate the credit for the month so I wasn’t out the money as well.

  4. I received the same exact box as well. A big no to the Stila Coral–I am very pale and it just rang clown on me. My husband literally did a double take. I am wondering if they sent the exact same items this month to everyone who did the upgraded box? It sounds like this might be the case based on others responses.

This was my 1st Birchbox (not upgraded) and I loved it, I received Harvey Prince Hello Body Cream, Juice Beauty CC Cream (so excited to try as I am running very low on my reg CC Cream,) Oribe Dry Texture Spray, Supergoop Anti-Aging Sunscreen Serum (never heard of anything like that,) and Stila Liquid Lipstick in Bella. Super happy with everything, except that the Stila Lipstick is far too bright pink for me. Based off your swatch, which shows a very highly pigmented color, I would not be able to pull off such a bright hue.

    • My dude says the bright pink Bella color looks fine on me (bright red hair) as log as the most I wore with it otherwise was mascara and a BB cream. He’s honest to a fault sometimes, but I bet you could tone it down in the same way as long as you wore a darker colored outfit or even used it on a night out.

  7. I just got my shipping notification for my July box today. Anyone else have super late shipping this month?

    • YES! UGH! I just got my box today- latest ever! It’s the same as Liz’s. I also order a Birchbox Plus Add-On but never received it. I thought it would come all together- hmm

      • I didn’t do the upgrade with two items but I did buy the BKR water bottle in purple (Rex) and that and my regular box arrived in same package.

  8. I got the Stila in the Coral color. Just no…it’s more like a bright orange. lol

    • I got two different colors and that was my remark in my reviews…..

  9. i canceled because i was getting charged and not getting the products. i dont want to have to remember every time to check and see if i got charged the right amount so for me it was easier to cancel. for me i like small mascaras as the large ones seem to dry out so fast so i would have been disappointed in this months.

  10. I received the same, except a different color of still. I am however still waiting for my add one, received an email saying they were shipping separately anyone else had this happen ?

I was thrilled when I read your unboxing review and quickly jumped onto the birchbox website to see that I have the exact same one (yay!) but I did miss out on the choice of Stila lipstick and am really hoping I don’t get the same color. I look funny with darker colored lipstick but that is such a beautiful and strongly pigmented shade that it makes me wish I could pull it off! So excited!!!

    • I’m so sad I requested the stila red and received the coral. I’ve contacted them and hope this could be fixed. Has anyone else had this problem??

      • Usually if they send the wrong item they give you points. They send the correct item if they still have it. Not sure if the red sold out.

      • Same here!!! I contacted them yesterday. Hoping to hear soon. Pretty frustrating!

  12. I also got everything exactly the same as you! And I was very happy with all of it. I love the separate packaging, it makes it seem more upgraded as goofy as that sounds. Like they aren’t just finding stuff they can squish in with our other samples.

  13. This is my exact box also (although my Stila was the coral, which on me is more of a flouro orange – which I totally dig). I am really happy with it although for me the mascara will probably go right to the swap list.

  14. Huh. Are the upgrades the same for everyone every month?

    Personally, I’ve never tried anything from Laura Gellar that I liked. My experience with Smashbox isn’t much better. :/

    • The two full size items are the same for each subscriber every month but it’s not always the brands we have this month. Last month I got a full size lip stain from Mirenesse and a cream blush from Mally.

  15. I received the same exact box! This is my favorite Birchbox ever! The value is awesome and I will get use out of every product. I’m especially excited about the strivectin and the oribe spray. So far I’ve been loving the new beta boxes! I really like the mascara and I’ve been using bronze and brighten for years, ever since I first purchased it from QVC 10 years ago! Thanks for the review!

  16. We got identical boxes! I also signed up for the upgrade and I’m pretty happy with it. I don’t know if I’ll get much use of the LG Bronzer but I’m happy with the value and looking forward to seeing what’s included in future boxes. I also had to sign up for a second account since I don’t think you can get the curated boxes with the new upgrade and I need next month’s Nicole Ritchie collab box!
