Club W Wine Subscription Review & Coupon – June 2015 Box

Club W is a monthly wine subscription that re-imagines the traditional wine club. Utilizing a “palate profile quiz” that you take when you join, Club W recommends bottles to suit your personal taste in wine. Each month, you make the decision whether to go along with their suggestions or choose your own bottles from their regularly changing assortment.  If you don’t login to make your monthly bottle selection, your recommended wines will be sent by default. You can skip a month at any time.

The wines are sourced directly from vineyards and winemakers, which helps Club W avoid middlemen and secure better wine for less money. Direct to consumer shipping also means they are able to offer smaller, more unique wines than you’ll find in the grocery store.

2013 Questo Quello Sangiovese- $13

2013 Wayward White Wine- $13

2014 BFG Barbera- $13

Based on my answers to the “palate profile quiz,” Club W recommended these bottles. My tastes are fairly varied: I like everything from deep & earthy reds to light & lively whites. I usually prefer bold wines to those with more subtle flavors, which I indicated in my quiz, but I’m willing to try just about anything.

Club W describes the 2013 Wayward White as a great bottle for all types of white wine drinkers. It’s aged in neutral oak, and is meant to please lovers of buttery chardonnay as well as those who prefer crisp whites with high acid. My tastes veer more toward the latter, and, to me, the Wayward White tastes like a pretty typical Chardonnay. Not a bad wine at all, but it lacks the crispness I was hoping for.

The Questo Quello Sangiovese is from Le Marche, Italy, which has been coined “the new Tuscany.” It’s one of the last untouched Italian wine regions, but it still produces grapes with traditional Italian flavors. Sangiovese “is always savory with characteristic flavors of cherry and dried fruit” and is the primary grape used to make Chianti (though wine can only be called Chianti if it’s made in the Chianti region of Tuscany). I like Sangiovese, but I prefer when it’s been aged and the flavors have a chance to mellow. Still, even though this wine is a little young for my liking, I think it will pair nicely with a big bowl of pasta marinara.

Barbera is another famed Italian grape, but this particular wine hails from California. Club W describes this wine as “medium-bodied with mouth-puckering acidity” and claims that it’s an all-around people pleaser that would be a great choice for a dinner party. I find it to be very easy to drink, and I think it would pair well with meaty dishes. It’s also smooth enough, though, that I don’t think it needs to be paired with food. I would happily sip on this while cooking.

Club W Wine Subscription Review & Coupon – June 2015 Recipe

Each month, I look forward to trying at least one of the recipes that Club W recommends pairing with their wine. I have a weakness for Macaroni & Cheese, so, this month, I couldn’t resist making Mac & Cheese (with a Sneaky Veggie Puree).

This was one of the more complicated recipes I’ve tried from Club W. It wasn’t difficult, per se, but there were a lot of steps. I started with the “sneaky veggie puree.” I began by roasting chunks of parsnip, cauliflower, and turnip and then pureed them using a food processor. I made a jazzed-up béchamel and then stirred in cheddar, Swiss, the veggie puree, and some pepper and nutmeg. I cooked the pasta, stirred it into the sauce, topped it with a breadcrumb mixture, and baked it until the sauce was bubbly and the crust browned.

I liked this dish quite a lot. I’ve seen similar recipes before that “hide” vegetables in kid-friendly dishes, but this is my first time trying one. I could taste the veggie puree, but I liked the flavors it added to the pasta. I’m not sure I would consider this a healthier version of macaroni and cheese (since it still contains the usual ingredients), but I think this is a good way to add some veggies into a dish that wouldn’t otherwise contain any. I’m not sure I’d make this again for my husband and myself (I’d probably just make a grown up mac and cheese like this one or serve a vegetable dish on the side), but I’ll keep it in my recipe book in case we have veggie averse kids over for dinner one day.

Verdict: My shipment from Club W this month wasn’t a home run, but I still enjoyed trying the bottles they sent. Usually, I have better luck with the picks they send me based on the quiz I took when I joined, but I accept that they can’t get it right every time. I still think Club W is a fun way to discover new wine, and I love that they send recipes to accompany each bottle. Every month, I look forward to making at least one of their dishes- I think the recipes are often delicious and easy to follow. If you love discovering new wine, I would definitely recommend trying Club W. If you’re a new subscriber, don’t forget to use this link to get 50% off your first shipment of 3 bottles.

Thanks for the review! $15/bottle is not a bad price if the wines are a home run. Is there any way to compare the true value, or are these Club W exclusives? I’m Googling them and they seem to be just from Club W.
That’s also an issue if I loved it and wanted to pick up more at BevMo.

Hi Linda,

The wines are Club W exclusives. You can order more through their site, but they usually sell out (sometimes pretty quickly). Not all of the wines are a home run, in my opinion, but they’re pretty generous with their satisfaction policy. From their website: “In the event that you are dissatisfied with the quality or taste of the product, please contact us immediately. We will gladly credit you the full value of your bottle towards another wine of your choosing in your next shipment.”

Hope that helps! 🙂
