UrthBox Subscription Box Review + Coupon – May 2015 - Classic Card

Urthbox included a card with information about how to earn member points and a magnet from Brownie Brittle.

UrthBox Subscription Box Review + Coupon – May 2015 - Brownie

Brownie Brittle (1 oz)- $1

Sadly, my bag of brownie brittle is not brittle at all. I’m not sure if it’s stale because of a tiny hole in the bag or because it’s out of date (there’s no date printed on the bag), but it’s very soft and definitely not edible. Luckily, it looks like I'll be able to try it in June's Love with Food Box.

UrthBox Subscription Box Review + Coupon – May 2015 - Edamame

Qancha Corn Snack (1 oz)- Not available for sale online.

Qancha Corn Snacks are made with only three ingredients: heirloom corn, avocado oil, and salt. I think they’re deliciously salty and crunchy.

Seapoint Farms Dry Roasted Edamame (1 oz)- value $.83

The Dry Roasted Edamame is another crunchy roasted snack. Seapoint Farms uses soybeans that are certified non-GMO and roasts them with a bit of salt. Since they’re roasted without oil, these beans are surprisingly low in fat.

UrthBox Subscription Box Review + Coupon – May 2015 - Nud

Nud Fud Spirulina Banana Crisps (33 g)- Not available for sale online.

These Spirulina Banana Crisps are a great example of why I love subscription food boxes. I would never purchase this snack for fear I wouldn’t like it, but I’m very happy to be able to try it. The crisps are dark green and covered in sesame seeds. The dominant flavor is definitely banana, though the spirulina provides a subtle (though not unpleasant) vegetal taste. Spirulina has a number of reported health benefits, and I think these crisps are a tasty way to introduce a little into your diet.

Dark Angell Organic Candy Bar (1.25 oz)- $1.80

Dark Angell Candy Bars are covered in dark chocolate and have a rich cocoa and almond center. They’re vegan, non-GMO, gluten free, and contain no preservatives. I’m always happy to discover all-natural versions of classic indulgent snacks, and I think this bar is good.

Verdict: I’m a little surprised and disappointed by the value of this month’s Urthbox. Even though I wasn’t able to find two of the products for sale online, I’d guess that the total value of this box is around $6. For the mini box I received, the cost per month is either $19 (with a monthly subscription) or $9 (with an annual subscription), so that’s pretty low. It seems even lower when I consider that my March Urthbox included 8 items and had a value of $14.65. Now, to be fair, the Urthbox website only promises 4-5 items in the mini box, but I think it’s unusual to see such drastic swings in content and value from month to month. I’ve enjoyed my past boxes, so I’m hoping that this month is just a fluke. We’ll see, I guess.

Additionally, I think it’s important to point out that a few subscribers have reported problems with Urthbox customer service, including trouble signing up with vouchers, double billing, and difficulty cancelling subscriptions. I haven’t had any problems so far, but I wanted to raise the issue and invite others to leave feedback about their Urthbox experiences.

Have you tried Urthbox? If so, please share your experiences in the comments section below.

It kind of looks like they’ve taken a turn for the worse. I had a subscription to the vegan box last year for maybe 9 months? Started through a deal site, then bought 6 months on my own and used a code to get a better price. (This was before they had variable box sizes.) And it was my favorite food subscription for a long time. There were a lot of chips but I was OK with that because I like salty snacks. The boxes were always super full and heavy. But remembering the boxes I got back then and comparing them to what I’m seeing now, something has definitely changed.

I quit around the time my car died last year, for financial reasons. I have not been charged again.

I will say, I had a much easier time contacting their CS when they were very new. I don’t remember what the issue was but I got a fast response during month 2 or my sub or so. But it took quite awhile to hear back from them when I was trying to cancel last October — maybe as long as a week.

I sort of had no problems, at first, I wanted to sub again so I was hoping for an email to get the hey it’s time for your new sub here’s your options but I never got it. I contacted them to up it from 3 to 6 and they were happy to do that. Still, no invoice made me upset, but I got the sub and was fine. I liked the boxes, but then the next time rolls around and again no communication no invoice for charging my card. That made me upset. They weren’t a new company then, and now it’s been months, you should be able to get your business practices in check. What works, what doesn’t, what gets the most complaints.
If you BBB check them they have quite a few complaints.

I sort of received a resolution, so I guess whatever, but, the way it works is sort of skeevy. They also block negative posts on their facebook and ban you from posting again if you have done so. Very sketch. I used to tell people and would speak up about how great the boxes were. But they lost my voice.

What is it with companies deleting comments on FB? It’s quite telling when you see 5 comments listed and zero on post. It says to me, “Save your money and aggravation”.

I had a subscription for the small box that I liked so much I also subscribed for a medium box. When I was pregnant and diagnosed with gestational diabetes I had no problem cancelling. I was planning on renewing again now that the baby was born, but am also surprised by how empty this month’s box looks in your review. I guess I will wait a month or two to see if they start sending more again.

I, too, was a little disappointed with the contents of the box! Especially after getting last month’s box. This is the 2nd time I’ve subscribed. Last year I subscribed using a deal site voucher and did not have problems canceling at all. This year, I decided to sign up again for the smaller box and used a coupon code so it made each month’s box even less. The subscription is for 6 months so we’ll see how cancellation goes the 2nd time around. My brownie brittle also was not brittle and more soft and chewy. I assumed that was the way it was supposed to be!

I also had trouble cancelling and they have poor customer service. At first I liked their boxes but now they keep putting in the same kinds of snacks (and always too many chips). I prefer more variety in my food boxes and it is not worth the expense. I would not recommend them.

I like what I got in my boxes, BUT it was hard to cancel and even after I canceled & confirmed they still tried to charge me luckily my credit card had expired so they were not able to start another 6 month one.

I got a groupon last year for this and I canceled after my 3 boxes was up with no problems. The boxes had too many chip products for my liking.

I bought a Living Social deal last year and had a hard time canceling. Ended up filing three credit card disputes. According to online reviews I read, my experience was not isolated.

Oh, yeah– but there is a waiting list sort of thingy.

I’ve been changing my eating habits and tried the “free” boxes of Graze, Naturebox and Love with Food – I wonder how “healthy” these snacks really are – or if they’re just considerable better than their regular snack counterparts. I’m probably better off trying to eat fruits & veggies (hummus & healthy yogurt too) rather than trying to find healthy chips and healthy chocolate bars. I mean, it might be good to have them on hand when you get a craving so you don’t eat the worse version but… I just need to figure out what will really work for me. Thanks for all your reviews!

Got the same as u. I was disappointed with the value as well. I’m trying to cancel with no luck yet. I’ve tried them before and had issues as well with troubles getting them to reply and disappointed with low values like this one.
