100% Peruvian Highlands Wool in “Bark” (3 skeins, 50 grams/110 yards each) – Value $29.97 ($9.99 each)
This is a soft yarn in a good, neutral color. It’s perfect for fall or winter. It’s not unusual for a company to send a color like this in May because it can take time to complete a project (see below) and you don’t want the season to pass you by before you have a chance to use the item you made. I’ve never worked with 100% wool before (I’m still fairly new to loom knitting) but this was great. It didn’t split on my loom hook and it had a nice amount of stretch. And I think it’ll make a really warm scarf that will work for a man or a woman and will match just about anything.
Note: I couldn’t find this exact color on the Sunstag Yarn site, so I am linking to a similar color made from the same material in the same weight.
I was hoping to have a little bit more completed before posting here (I waited three weeks to send in this review) but I haven’t had a lot of extra time lately. I decided to adapt a pattern from Loom Knit Dishcloths by Kathy Norris into a scarf (made the pattern a little wider and will increase the length). I’m using the Martha Stewart Knit and Weave Loom Kit to do this (I don’t quite have the hang of needle knitting but I taught myself loom knitting using a book). So far, I think it’s turning out well.
Verdict: I calculated a value of about $30 for this month’s shipment. That’s about $5 over the cost of the box. If you factor in the free shipping, I think it’s a reasonably good deal. (You can save a little money by signing up for a longer subscription up front, but it only works out to maybe an extra fifty cents or dollar saved per box to sign up for six months or a year.) I don’t expect the same crazy high values here as I’d get with beauty subscriptions, however.
I do appreciate the chance to work with a type of yarn I haven’t tried before. I’m totally a fan of wool yarn now.
In the end, I think this subscription would be best for an intermediate knitter (or crocheter) – someone looking to build up a yarn stash but also experienced enough to be able to locate and choose a pattern or project without being given a lot of guidance.
