SCENTBIRD MAY 2015 - BOX

Scentbird is a perfume sampling subscription box that sends you 100% authentic perfumes every month. When you sign up, you take a preferences quiz to help them suggest recommendations for you to try, and you can also go browse and rate the rest of their selection to make the recommendations even more accurate. You can build a queue of fragrances you’d like to try or you can let yourself be surprised every month.

Because this subscription is so heavily personalized, the fragrance I selected to review this month is only one of a large number other subscribers may have received.

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

The Subscription: Scentbird

The Cost: $14.95/monthly, $14.50/month with a 3-month plan, $14/month with a 6 month plan, or $13.50/month with a year plan.

The Products: One 8 ml spray atomizer of a 100% authentic perfume

Ships to: US

SCENTBIRD MAY 2015 - info 1

Along with the fragrance you receive each month, Scentbird also includes a card describing the “perfume of the month” for the next month. June’s featured perfume is Daisy Dream from Marc Jacobs. I’m actually familiar with this fragrance and I really like it! It’ fruity, fresh, and a great summer scent.

SCENTBIRD MAY 2015 - info 2

With your first month’s delivery, you receive a perfume case that fits your 8 ml sprays inside – this card details how to use it!

SCENTBIRD MAY 2015 - item 1

The purse spray case you get with your first month is black, and comes with the sample vial inside. Recently they received feedback that subscribers wanted the option to order more cases, and they listened! You can now add-on extra cases to your delivery for $12.95, and you can choose between pink and black! This is what the pink case looks like (closed) – it’s gorgeous and I adore it.

SCENTBIRD MAY 2015 - item 2

And here you can see it open. I have to say that that these atomizer cases are probably my favorite part of this subscription for me. The cases have a nice weight, are sleek, and feel high quality. It’s super easy to open and close, and to switch perfumes you just open, pull the vial out, and place the next one inside!

SCENTBIRD MAY 2015 - item 3

The fragrance I received this month is Ocean Lounge by Escada. Ocean Lounge is categorized under “Workout, Girly, and Fruity.” Its top notes are strawberry meringe, litchi, plum, pear nectar; its middle notes are violet petal sorbet aromas, mimosa blossom, and jasmine; and its base notes are amber, sheer vanilla, and teak wood.  Overall, I love this scent!

I chose to try this fragrance because one of my absolute favorite scents ever is Born in Paradise by the same brand (seriously, you’re instantly transported to a beach when you spray it – perfect for summer!), and I also like many other Escada fragrances.

Ocean Lounge is very fruity, sweet, and fresh and I definitely look forward to wearing it this season.

Verdict: A 3.3 fl oz (97.5 ml) bottle of this fragrance sells for $69.95, so this .27 oz/8 ml spray is worth about $5.73. The sample size Scentbird sends is enough for a month of use, with two applications a day – this is a lower value than usual for me, but that’s only because of my selection of perfume. You can definitely order brands and fragrances that are really expensive and get a monetary value that is more than the monthly cost of the sub.  However, I still see a good value for this month because I can’t find roller ball sizes of this perfume for sale, just a full-size bottle – if there’s no other way to get this purse-size portion, it’s definitely great to be able to get it via Scentbird!

I love that their selection is so large and has lots of variety, and includes lots of high-end brands that I recognize. I’ve found they don’t typically carry perfumes that have been very newly released, but you can always email them requests to add them. They keep a list of perfumes they plan on adding, and requests for specific fragrances bump them up in priority.

If you’re interested in trying out Scentbird, they offer some of my favorite fragrances to try: Prada CandyLancome La Vie Est Belle, and Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy are just some of my recommendations!

What do you think of Scentbird?

Haley, will you please review Scent Trunk??? That would be great. I wanted to try, but 50% off code expired.

Also, if anyone was successful refilling the vial, please let me know! What a great idea to keep travel size of our favorite scent.

It is my first month with RLL voucher and I am happy with my pick. I choose the one that was recommended, but read user reviews carefully and it worked. I went to Sephora to check it out, but I didn’t see it and took a chance.

The coupon code doesn’t work. I’ve been eyeballing this subscription but never actually signed up for an account until today….because I saw the coupon code. *sigh*

This is my fourth month with scentbird – I got the six month deal on Rue La La. I have mixed feelings. I have had bad luck with it so far – I think the original survey didn’t work for me. My first month I liked the perfume fine, wasn’t blown away, but it was something I would wear. The second month I didn’t like the scent when initially sprayed, but it was okay once it faded, however, then I really couldn’t smell anything at all. The third month I went for the perfume of the month – it sounded so good on their card! And I hated it. Then, I started to get serious – I had gone to the department store and tried a bunch of scents to see what I liked, but the ones I liked weren’t available on Scentbird. I moved my queue around a bit, but the website kept glitching on me, and I ended up receiving something on my queue but not the one that I had thought I had put first, and I really hate it. Sigh.

So, while I haven’t had luck so far (only one-for-four), I am hopeful for the next two months because I had great interaction with customer service. I emailed them (as Haley had mentioned they were open to suggestions for new perfumes to stock) and I listed the perfumes I liked that they don’t have in stock and asked if they had any recommendations from what they do have, and they responded with a handful of recommendations. I thought that was really great of them to take the time to do.

Long story short, I’m really hopeful that I’ll like the last two perfumes in my sub now that they’ve given me recommendations that should be close to perfumes I know I like.

I do think, like Nana said, that this is a better sub if you’ve already tried out some smaller dept store samples via vials, so you have an idea of the scents you like and you then want to wear them for a month to really try them out.

I’m so glad you mentioned your issue with your queue – I’ve been having the same one, but they didn’t mention a site-wide issue or that they’ve heard about this glitch for other users.

Basically, what I’ve found happens, is that I can add things to my queue but they’re stuck at the end (even after a blank space for a month, indicating skipping that month). Any moving around of fragrances doesn’t save when the page reloads. I’ve been in pretty consistent contact with them about the issue and they’ve been responsive and helpful, but the issue with the site still hasn’t been resolved. Now that I’ve heard from a reader that they’re having the same issue, I’m going to mention it to them – I think this is the second or third month that this glitch has been happening to me. I sure hope they fix it soon. If it’s not fixed by the time I receive my June fragrance, I’m definitely bringing all this up in the review!

Also, I wonder if there are any other subscribers who are NOT having this issue? Thanks so much for your feedback, Chellersm!

This is my second month with Scentbird and the 2nd month of failure for me. First month, I loved the scent but it just didn’t attach to my skin. This month, I really hate the scent.

Apparently I’m just not good enough at guessing what will work for me. I’ve decided to give Scent Trunk a try, and see if they can do a better job of guessing than I can. I may go back to Scentbird but more to purchase specific perfumes I know I like rather than to sample.

I love Escada! Ocean Lounge is actually the first in my queue and is on the way.

I love this sub. It’s perfect for trying out perfumes and I love the little sprayers. Has anyone tried to refill one of the sprayers once the perfume is gone? Curious if this is possible, as I’d love to reuse them.

I was just thinking about this myself the other day! I have yet to work my way through a Scentbird vial, but once I do, I definitely plan to pull it apart and see if I can refill it! Especially with consideration to what Lisa asked below, it’d be great to keep the value in the cases/atomizers if you were to ever stop your subscription or try to make a purse version of your favorite scent you may have in a full-size bottle already.

Lisa

Do the spray case/atomizers only work with scentbird’s vials or could you refill or use other perfume samples?

Haley

Lisa,

I imagine if you find other generic, 8ml glass vials like these, you could use them in the case as well. However, it’s not typical to sell perfume in just those glass bottles, probably due to break-ability, and I wouldn’t recommend having just the vial without the case in your purse. Even most refillable purse atomizers I can find have a design made to work on their own.

So, long story short, on the off chance that you find identical atomizers for sale (hey, Scentbird has to get them from some manufacturer, right?), you could get those. However, for all intents and purposes, I’d have to say they’re pretty specific to Scentbird.
