This month’s theme is Summer Picnic.
The included brochure details all of the items included in the box.
On the back of the brochure, Hamptons Lane lists a couple of recipes that utilize the ingredients and tools in the box.
Custom Crafted Olivewood & Stainless Steel Knife by Pallares Solsona- value $45?
I believe this knife is a Hamptons Lane exclusive, so I’ve estimated the price based on similar knives for sale here. This is a beautiful knife, and I love the olivewood handle. It appears to be well made, and I’m pleased to add it to my knife collection.
Leather Picnic Knife Sheath- value ?
This is another exclusive product, and a great addition to a picnic box. When I pack for a picnic, I’m never quite sure what to do about knives and cutlery. I usually go with disposable plastic or bamboo, but sometimes I like to pack foods like whole salami or hard cheese that are hard to cut without a real knife. I hesitate to bring a sharp knife, though, because I’m never quite sure how to safely pack it in my basket. This product certainly solves that problem, and it’s gorgeous to boot. The only problem is that the sheath fits the knife a little loosely, so I’ll have to take care when packing it to make sure the cover doesn’t fall off in transit.
Bee's Wrap (2 medium 10” x 11” wraps)- value $12.60
Bee’s Wrap is an earth-friendly alternative to plastic wrap. It’s made with organic cotton muslin, beeswax, jojoba oil, and tree resin (and it smells like honey!). You can use it to cover a bowl by using the warmth of your hands to mold the wrap and create a seal. When used and cleaned properly (no dishwasher for this stuff), it is reusable for up to a year. Here’s a picture of the wrap itself:
Raw Tupelo Honey Packets (3 packets)- value $3.45
Tupelo honey is known as “the Queen of Honeys.” It has a light, smooth, and buttery flavor and is only harvested for a short time in the spring. I love that Honey Pax portions it into single-serve portions you can use on the go. I think this is a great item for a picnic box.
Garlic Dill Mustard (6 oz.)- value $7
Mustard and Co. Garlic Dill mustard is minimally processed and has very bold flavor. Hamptons Lane suggests using it to make Chicken Salad or Smoked Salmon Egg Salad Tartines.
Jans Farmhouse Crisps (4 oz.)- value $6
Jan’s Farmhouse Crisps are made with dried cranberries, flax seed, pistachios, sesame, and pepitas. They can be served with hummus, cheese, or honey and are loved by Martha Stewart!
My Summer Picnic
Every month, Hamptons Lane provides recipes to accompany their box. I’ve had a lot of luck with the Hamptons Lane recipes, and I always look forward to making them. For this month’s picnic, I decided to make: Honey Mint Citrus Salad, Spicy Honey Hummus, Kale Brussels Salad with Garlic Dill Mustard Vinaigrette, and Vegan Veggie Sandwiches. The meal fell on a beautiful evening, so I decided to stage the picnic on our building’s rooftop.
We started the meal with cheese and olives and broke in the Pallares Solsona knife.
Early on the day of the picnic, I made Spicy Honey Hummus (which was very spicy) by pureeing chickpeas, tahini, honey, olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, cumin, and cayenne in my food processor.
As per Hamptons Lane’s suggestion, we used the hummus on Vegan Veggie Sandwiches. I set out all of the ingredients for the sandwiches (arugula, carrot, avocado, sprouts, hummus, and bread) so everyone could make their own.
Here’s mine:
To accompany the sandwiches, we had Kale Brussels Salad with Garlic Dill Mustard Vinaigrette. The salad was a mix of kale, shaved Brussels sprouts, Jan’s Crisps, blueberries (the recipe called for pomegranate seeds, but my grocery store didn’t have any pomegranates), pepitas, and a dressing of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and Mustard and Co.’s Garlic Dill Mustard. I really enjoyed the salad, and I liked the inclusion of Jan’s Crisps.
To finish the meal, we had Honey Mint Citrus Salad, which was a simple dish of sliced naval oranges and grapefruit, fresh mint, and honey.
It was a perfect, light way to end the picnic.
Verdict: I look forward to Hamptons Lane every month, and I love that each box helps me create a unique dining experience. I really appreciate that shipments include both food and tools, and I’m always really impressed with quality of items selected by Hamptons Lane. I couldn’t do an exact value breakdown for this box because of the exclusive items, but I’m pretty confident the value exceeds the cost of the box (it usually does). I think Hamptons Lane offers excellent curation and solid value for money, and I definitely recommend it for adventurous cooks and foodies!
