GlossyBox Subscription Box Review & Coupon – May 2015 Box

GlossyBox is a monthly beauty subscription box. They have the best packaging in the business, their products are usually deluxe-size or full size, and the value is usually really good too. The only issue with this box seems to be the late shipping – I would recommend just keeping that in mind and setting your expectations accordingly if you sign up for this box.

GlossyBox sent us this box early for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

GlossyBox Subscription Box Review & Coupon – May 2015 Glamglow

Clearista Retexturizing Gel – 15 ml Value $10

Here is the description of the Retexturizing Gel from Clearista:

Clearista Retexturizing Gel™ contains our safe proprietary ingredients plus mild, biodegradable abrasives that enhance the skin’s normal exfoliation processes. It not only helps reduce the appearance of rough and bumpy surface blemishes, but is also effective at reducing the appearance of age and sun-related folding and wrinkling of sensitive areas around the eyes and mouth.

This brand is new to me, and I’m excited to try it. I love that this product is free of synthetic fragrances, synthetic dyes, and parabens, plus I always am on the lookout for a new gentle exfoliator!

Glamglow Powermud – .5 oz Value $19

I love all of the Glamglow products I’ve tried, so this was the first item out of the box I used! It’s paraben, phthalate, and sulfate free, and unlike other Glamglow muds, this one is “mud to oil” – it transitions to a cleansing oil when you wipe it off.

I put on a thin layer of the mask, and it took about 10 minutes for it to completely dry up. (I like masks that change in the process of wearing them – it makes me feel like they are working!) After washing it off, my skin felt incredibly clean. This is a product I will likely buy in full size – I just love how it makes my skin feel!

GlossyBox Subscription Box Review & Coupon – May 2015 Nail Polish

Sebastian StylBrid 9 – 1.5 oz Value $5

This hairspray is paraben and alcohol free, and it is designed to be a hybrid style product. You can use the spray on damp or dry hair to add volume, texture, hold, etc. I just sampled it on dry hair, and I like that it isn’t sticky at all and didn’t make my hair too stiff either.

teeez Head over Heels Nail Lacquer Base Coat FULL SIZE! – Value $14

For all nail polish I receive in subscription boxes, I don’t think I ever get base coats, so this is a nice change! (And the packaging design is cute too).

GlossyBox Subscription Box Review & Coupon – May 2015 Lipstick

Doucce Mineral Matt Lipstick (Shade 907) – FULL SIZE! Value $20

I like the shade of this lipstick, but I do have a few issues with it. First, I like a moisturizing lipstick that easily glides on – this is the opposite of that. I’m guessing it has to be since it is a matte finish, but I’m not crazy about the formula. My other issue is that I can’t find the ingredients for this lipstick anywhere online.

Verdict: This box has a value of about $68. I think the value is good, and I’m happy with the sizes of the beauty items included. I’m most excited about the Glamglow, Clearista, and Stylbrid products. What do you think of the May 2015 GlossyBox?

  1. Again, love the packaging! And agree about the base coat – need one.
Now I want to try the Powermud…

  2. The May box is my first box. I just got it today in MS. Actually I have 6 products in it which I didn’t expect (maybe a welcome offer lol). I love most of the products especially the lip balm by Teeez, the glamglow musk and the exfoliator are nice as well. The black eye shadow powder isn’t for me and the bottle was kinda broken (I consider this is the bonus so not much complain about it).

  3. I just realized it’s literally the end of May and I never received my May GB! Anyone else on the West Coast still waiting on theirs??

    • Got mine in AZ around the 20ish.

    • Still waiting in AZ

    • I live in Washington and I got mine over a week ago.

    • I live in Wa and just got mine very end of May.

    • I live in California and received mine in early may

    • ugh… this is so weird… no to mention frustrating… it’s June 15th and I still haven’t gotten my May GB. Is this normal?

      • I would contact them? I received BOTH my May and June boxes this past Saturday (06/13).

        • Thanks for the responses, IR in AZ, Nancy, Trish, Dawn, Anne & Ericka… Funny thing is, I actually just got my June box this past weekend… and as for May, I have written them twice and still no box, no response, no happy. :/ Apparently the struggle is real with this May box for me, for some reason! Anyone have any insight as to getting their customer service reps to respond? I’ve both emailed AND used their site contact messaging thingy twice now. Urgh. I’m literally -thisclose- to breaking up with them.

  4. I just got back from a long weekend and was so happy to see my GlossyBox waiting for me. I was actually really excited to receive a nail polish base coat, but instead received a Julep polish in Drew – Bombshell. I was slightly disappointed by this swap out, but this is my 1st Julep polish ever, so I’m happy to try it out. As far as the lipstick goes, I was happy with the color and scent of it. The Sebastian spray is great, always happy to have travel size hair products. Very excited to try the Clearista and super stoked to have a GlamGlow product to try!

  5. I just received my box today, which felt odd because I didn’t get April’s box until after the first week of May. Anyway, I’m intrigued by most of the items but won’t use the lipstick. It just smells weird, like Cover Girl makeup weird.

  6. I got my notice of shipment on the 23rd. I won’t receive my box until the end of the week so while they’ll probably get in under the wire for the month, only barely.I know Liz gave us the heads up about the late shipping but I find myself irritated every month. Maybe that’s unreasonable but it’s anyone else a little tired of this?

    • *is

  7. We have gotten numerous requests to post our ingredients list on this thread and our website. Unfortunately, it is not a common thing for cosmetics companies to post their ingredients list on their site, however they are always available on request.

Please see below for the ingredients list for Doucce Mineral Matt Lipstick Cherry Blossom (907) –

The current formulations for the above-cited products manufactured for Doucce Cosmetics do not include wheat products. However, Doucce Cosmetics does store and manufacture items that may contain gluten on the same processing equipment.

    • thank you for posting this. I love the lipstick!!

  8. Buyer Beware – they charged me twice in one month, the 2nd time after I cancelled. Why are they sending me 2 boxes in less than 30 days?!?! I only wanted one discounted by Rue La La, because it’s not worth $21. They shipped it out 11 days after they charged my credit card! It is my understanding that the law states they can not charge your credit card prior to shipping. They said they shipped today, so does that mean I’m getting the box in the description above or the crappy box of leftovers? They also deleted my complaint on FB mins after I posted it. I’m so angry, so I’m letting my credit card company & BBB deal with it.

    • They can charge you before shipping. Very few businesses that sell products don’t charge you at point of sale.

  9. I cancelled my subscription back in April so I wouldn’t get this months. Today I just got my shipping confirmation. Oh well it doesn’t look that bad. I just went ahead and resubscribed too.

    • You have to cancel before April 15 to avoid getting May’s box. If you just resubscribed, you will probably get a second May box. Only it will be a “classic” box full of old stuff because May is supposedly sold out.

  10. Just got my box today. It’s identical to Liz’s. I like the variety, but my only complaint is that most of the samples seem small. I signed on for Glossybox because I was told by someone who gets both glossy and birch that the samples were considerably bigger. Happy to try all the items though.

Wish the lipstick wasn’t so dry. I would never buy it as is.

    • The last few months (I felt) that the samples were of a pretty decent size. This month, it’s true, they’re not as large. Some of the products are more costly, though, so there is that. There are two full-size items this month to be fair, they just aren’t physically big ones.

  11. LIz (or someone knowledgeable) could you give me some advice about re-subbing/timing please? I stopped my sub after February and got lured in by the RueLaLa certificate. I will be re-joining in either June or July (depending on what the June box spoilers indicate). I know that I should re-sub on the 1st so that I get the ‘real box’ vs. the ‘leftovers box’. My question is regarding glossy points. I will have 1,000 points after reviewing my next box. How do I go about redeeming these for a free box but avoiding a duplicate box? In other words, I would just like it to extend my subscription for a month at the end of my RueLaLa paid subscription term. I have never been one to sub/unsub boxes (this one or any others) monthly so not sure how to make this happen. Thanks!

  12. Please email us at – we will send you the ingredients list and would love to give you other Doucce products to try!

    • Hi Doucce, I’ve heard a lot of comments about your lipstick and the big complaint is the formula; it is dry and takes several firm passes of the tube along the lips to get the color to show up. However, the packaging is sleek and eye-catching and the color (Cherry Blossom) is truly gorgeous and flattering for all skin tones. So, you have a product that, with some tweaking, could be really great. Good luck! 🙂

    • Can you just post the ingredients list here? Then everyone who reads this post can see them.

  13. I really liked this box! I did get almost the same as Liz but my polish is in coral which is beautiful and one of my favorites. I am trying to give the lipstick the benefit of trying it a couple of times. The first application was not smooth and the color was blah, but after the second application it got a bit smoother. Not my favorite formula but I will use it. Would rate it as just ok. I can’t wait to try the glam glow!!!

  14. I got the same box besides the nail polish is a gold glitter which I won’t use. I just got the mystery box from julep so I was really hoping for the base coat since I currently don’t have one and I want to start getting back into my nail routine !

  15. I got the same box as shown here, except my nail polish is a gold glitter polish. I would like it if I didn’t have 2 others from Julep already.

    • With my luck, the polish will be a duplicate of something I already have from Julep.

  16. i just got mine yesterday (may 13) and i think its just ok. i got the same as Liz other than cotton candy nail polish which i think i like though its a bit orangy for me (to me cotton candy is baby pink). we shall see how long it lasts ! I tweeted the company to see if the lipstick is GF and they said “its technically GF however it may have had contact with gluten because the factory isnt GF” seems odd to me. i tweeted back asking them if what they mean is the raw ingredients are GF but the equipment is shared. i don’t know much about the actual manufacturing of lipstick but i suppose the production lines could have other items on them that contain gluten like lotions or something. who knows. I wont chance it especially if the formula is bad. very disappointing for any sub box to contain an item with no ingredients listed.

  17. Man I’m glad I’m no the only one who feels that way about the lipstick. Tried it on, and I felt like I was using an old-lipstick. It is like rubbing a crayon on your lips, it’s that hard to get on. The color is nice, but I shouldn’t have to fight a lipstick to get it on my lips.

  18. I got mine today and liked it for the most part. I wish I’d gotten a base coat (or top coat) for the polish; I got pink (I always get pink or coral — my least favorite nail colors) but the bottle is so darned pretty and the box it came in as well that I’ll probably keep it on my vanity as decor. 🙂 Excited to try the Glam Glow mask; I like the other GG product I tried.

  19. I just got mine. I like it, but there are at least two items I’ll probably be putting up for swap.

I really like the lipstick shade (I got the same one as Liz), but haven’t tried it on yet. I hope I like the formula, but I’m worried I won’t.

I didn’t get a base coat nail polish, but instead got a pretty coral color. I like it, but I received one just like it in my March Boxycharm, so I might put it up for trade.

The Sebastian product looks interesting, and it’s something I’ll probably use.

I actually probably won’t use the Glamglow or the Clearista. I’ll most likely swap them.

  20. I just got my Glossybox and Boxycharm today it looks like May is going to be a disappointing month for me besides my Birchbox. I got a mauve/purple-ish lipstick, cotton candy nail polish, it’s a pastel pink color. I’ll only use the Glamglow and Clearista which I’m interested in trying. I’m very glad Glossybox appears to have gone back to the same box for everyone though.

  21. I know this sounds crazy but I don’t really care when the box shows up….as long as I get my one per month 🙂 Just got my tracking so it is one its way. LOL (with all my boxes) I like the element of surprise in no knowing what is going to show up on any given day

  22. Instead of the regular April box, I received the Mother’s Day box. I guess that makes up for it being really late.

Did anyone else get the Mother’s Day box instead of the regular one?

    • I haven’t received anything. So discouraged as I am new to this whole process. Subbed around early April. Is this normal service for them?

      • I subbed in early February and got a box mid month. I got my March box later in the month and my April box today. I don’t know what is going on with them. The Mother’s Day box is nice though.

        • Yay I’m glad you received something worth the wait! I hope to say the same! Fingers cross this month was a one time incidence.

          • Post when you get yours please. I’m curious to see what other late shipments are. The Mother’s Day box is high value even if you don’t count the inflated Orogold.

        • Will do! Fingers crossed you enjoy your May box too!

          • I just hope I get it in May!

        • Mine just shipped yesterday. The first two months (March and April) I was surprised at how fast the shipping was, how quickly I was billed, and how quickly the surveys were available. This month, the honeymoon seems to be over, since I’m sure I won’t get my box until next week and had to contact them to see what was up.

          • Just be glad you are getting the May box in May. Mine just shipped yesterday too. I’m thinking of canceling after this month. I am drowning in products and Glossybox is starting to become my least favorite.

        • Ok just got my April box!! It included a bright red Julep polish, So Susan concealer quad, Aqua spa chamomile- lavender body lotion, Unwash conditioner, and Jelly Bong Bong fairy lashes mascara in full size. I guess this is the dreaded left over box, but as a new sub I’m happy, happy, happy! I also got my May box. Have you received yours?

          • I meant pong pong haha

          • I’m glad you are happy with your box. I liked the Unwash conditioner so much I bought a full sized one. I received my May box a few days ago and it was ok. I did get the base coat, so I was happy with that.

          • Ooo yay, I can’t wait to try it! Fingers crossed they up their game for June!

    • I still haven’t received my April box. They asked if I wanted a refund, and I decided to hold out for a few more days because I really wanted the Estee’ Lauder sample. I did receive some glossydots as an apology, which was nice. I do think I’ll email them tomorrow though to ask for a refund. This is the only time I’ve really had an issue with their shipping (besides the October and February boxes coming after I could make use of the holiday items), but this is a bit ridiculous. Glossybox was one of my favorite boxes too – they always seem to hit the mark with me and what I need in my arsenal. I’m trying not to hold a grudge.

      • Has your May box shipped yet? I should be getting my May one in a few days. Glossybox used to be one of my favorites too but I may cancel it now. I’m not happy with Boxycharm this month either. I’m always reluctant to cancel for fear that the next month will have something awesome in it.

        • Nope – sure hasn’t! I was hoping maybe those of us who had to wait too long for April would get bumped to the front of the line for May, but it’s not looking like it. I actually just emailed asking for the refund. The appeal of the April box kind of wore off. I know what you mean – I cancelled BoxyCharm after only a couple of boxes. It just wasn’t for me. I don’t like getting the same brands every month, and it seemed to be the case while I was a subscriber. I ended up cancelling before the box included the Reveal 2 pallet, which I admit was really nice to have in the box. I ended up using my Birchbox points to get one free though.

  23. Will everyone receive glamglow and clearista products??

  24. I actually dread getting lip color products from them. Don’t get me wrong, lots of women look forward to receiving it, but with my skin color, darker lip sticks, glosses, stains look better on me if they are a darker color and preferably red, which I never get in my box. Even when I filled out the preferences, I still get “pink” which looks unflattering on me.

    • I have the same problem with them! I’m hoping I don’t have another OCC letdown – I got orange, and then the alternative would have been too pink anyway.

      • I feel your pain. I get these deep dark pinks from them and they are just all wrong for me. I’m sad when I have to give them away or toss them, they are usually really great formulas just a color issue. I think GlossyBox should give us at least 3 color choices for our boxes. I also think it would make their customers much happier.

    • Don’t be too concerned about the color of this lipstick. As Liz (I think it was Liz who reviewed) mentioned, this formula is so dry it’s sort if like drawing a stuck if chalk across ones mouth. Wouldn’t you know, I finally received a color that works for me! It’s super dry and wears right off.

  25. I think I’m skipping this month. Hopefully next month will be better and I will use my Rue LaLa certificate. Looking forward to seeing what everyoe receives this month, though. Last month definitely seemed better than the March debacle with the huge variations in value.

  26. still haven’t received Aprils box yet… -_-

    • Me either. I got an email on the 30th saying they were waiting for another shipment of one of the items. I’m frustrated and thinking of canceling.

    • I haven’t either. I subbed over a month ago. If this is any indication of how this company handles business, I def will not reup.

    • I think this has to be the GLOSSYBOX with the smallest products in EVER!! I mean really!! The lipstick is the only full size product and liz says it’s not a great formula & that really matters to me! Think this might be my 1st skip ever! Glad u did a review early this time!!

  27. Oh my gosh, you already got your May box?? I usually don’t get mine til the end of the month! Glossybox in particular is known for late shipping. They definitely give better service to high-profile bloggers. The good thing is we get reviews early enough to order our own (I guess that’s exactly the point, lol) but the bad thing is we who have paid a long time ago wonder why we can’t get our boxes in a similar speedy fashion.

    • Yeah – it’s much earlier. She got hers sent earlier for review purposes: “GlossyBox sent us this box early for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).” Ramblingsofasuburbanmom also gets hers sent early for reviews. “GLOSSYBOX kindly sent me the May 2015 box to review early and I am so excited to share it!”

It definitely worked out for me because I re-subscribed in time to get the May box. And that’s good because I know that once they run out of a specific month’s boxes that they just send random stuff left behind from other months. So if blog posters reviewed Glossybox when everyone else gets their boxes then it might be too late for people to get that month once they realized that they wanted it.

With Boxycharm, however, it seems like they often have leftover boxes at the end of the month, and even sell past month’s boxes (which is great because I only recently found out about them so ordered the December box to get the Coastal Scents Revealed palette which is on its own worth $20 and awesome). So maybe that’s why Boxycharm doesn’t send their boxes early to reviewers.

      • Yeah, that happened to me when I first joined Glossybox. I got a random box of old stuff. I looked online and found products from boxes as far back as 6-8 months ago. 🙂 I didn’t mind too much, cuz the stuff was decent, but they do seem to run out of the current month’s boxes quickly. As for bloggers getting them early for review, that makes sense because they are providing advertisement in exchange for the free box, but I guess I didn’t realize just how much earlier they got them than the rest of us. 🙂

  28. I’ve been bypassing most beauty boxes, since I just don’t use enough product to justify boxes solely for beauty. However, this box looks amazing! It is the first glossybox I’ve thought I would use everything in. It would be lovely to have a new base coat for the times I paint my own nails, a small hair spray would be useful to have around, both skin care items look useful and interesting, and lipsticks are my absolute favorite beauty item to try.

    • I notice that for Glossybox, they give you surveys (that earn you ‘glossydots’) and they often ask questions that seem to inform your box curation. For example, in April’s survey, they asked if I prefer getting base and top coats/nail care products, or if I prefer nail varnish. If you do subscribe, keep that and the surveys you do in the beginning in mind!

  29. It still doesn’t look any more thrilling to me. But I’m very glad last month they seemed to only have 1 variation of the box.

  30. re-subscribed after seeing these products. I just spilled my basecoat while traveling so I’m hoping I get that, plus I know that every box will have the GlamGlow mask, which is worth almost as much as the whole box. And I signed up for the bonus eyeshadow. Hoping to get the re-texturizing gel and the lipstick too, but I know there will be variations. I’m definitely addicted!

  31. I was just about to start up again with Glossy until I saw the clearesta has mild abrasives in it. Otherwise I think this box is super good.

  32. It looks like a great box. I’m curious about the Glamglow.

  33. I’m really looking forward to this month! I’ve been thinking of trying the glam glow anyway, so I’m delighted that I’ll get to try it first! The base coat is also a welcome change of pace if there has to be a nail product, and the re texturizing gel looks interesting as well. Thanks for regularly encouraging my sub box addiction!

  34. Liz, thanks to your review, I just re-subscribed to Glossybox after seeing Glamglow in the box! I canceled my subscription in July of last year, but I obviously have zero willpower because I couldn’t stay away long lol. I need subscription box rehab!!!

  35. Liz you crack me up, because I’m the same way with my masks. I want to be able to see it’s doing something a bit more special than my regular cleanser. Peel off masks are the best…like when you would cover your hands in glue as a kid and then those 5 minutes for it to dry would be an eternity.

    • I’m glad I’m not the only one who feels this way! 🙂

  36. Mud to oil? I’m intrigued! The original Glam Glow was too harsh for my skin, so I haven’t really paid attention to any of their other products but now I’m thinking I need to give them a second look.

  37. Liz,

First thanks for all the reviews and everything on MSA site. I’m thinking for makeup/color products review, it might be helpful to include swatches (or how it looks before and after when putting on, some review sites do that). My 2cents 🙂

    • I have to agree. We never see swatches, products being used, or clothes actually tried on. It seems just a regurgitation of the products inserts.

    • Thanks for the feedback! I’ll keep that in mind for future reviews. 🙂

  38. This box looks amazing! I would be absolutely thrilled with everything (especially that mask).

  39. Great review! This will be my first GlossyBox and I’m very excited to receive this sometime soon (no tracking info yet). But, my Mother’s Day box should arrive this week (received a tracking number late Friday).

  40. way better than the German Glossybox I got this month!
