Craft Beer Club Subscription Box Review – June 2015 Yazoo

Yazoo Brewing Company Dos Perros

Yazoo Brewing Company Gerst

Yazoo’s Dos Perros is a Mexican Brown Ale made with German Munich malt, English Pale malt, chocolate malt, and European hops. According to the information provided in the flyer, “many Mexican beer styles are descendants of old Austrian styles, from when Austria ruled Mexico in the late 19th century.” I think that’s so interesting, and I had no idea Mexican beer making has been influenced so directly by Austrian traditions. Dos Perros is brewed with a Mexican twist too, though. Yazoo adds flaked maize to lighten the body and add a touch of sweetness. I think this ale is very drinkable, and I like the subtle sweetness and hint of chocolate.

Gerst Brewery was the original brewery in Nashville, Tennessee (where Yazoo is based), but it never got back on its feet after the end of prohibition. Yazoo brought the beer back to life with a recipe that’s as true as possible to the original. Today’s Gerst is an amber ale made with German malts and a bit of flaked maize. Both my husband and I are fans of the recipe, and we enjoyed sampling such a historic brew.

Craft Beer Club Subscription Box Review – June 2015 River Horse

River Horse Brewing Company Hop Hazard

River Horse Brewing Company Summer Blonde

Hop Hazard is an American Pale Ale from New Jersey’s River Horse Brewing Company. According to River Horse, this beer has “a golden-orange hue, medium body and a floral, hoppy finish.” I’m not usually a fan of super hoppy beers, but I thought this one was great. It’s very hoppy at first, but the hops give way to nice balance and a smooth finish.

Summer Blonde is an easy drinking American Blonde Ale that’s only available in the summer months. Craft Beer Club describes this beer as having “citrusy aromas and flavors with a touch of grain, wheat and spice.” It’s funny, I usually love blonde beers and dislike hoppy ones, but I greatly preferred the Hop Hazard to the Summer Blonde.

In addition to providing information about the beers in the box, the Craft Beer Club flyers also provide some background about the featured breweries. I particularly liked their description of how the River Horse Brewery got its name. “River Horse” is a nickname for the hippopotamus, and the brewery picked this moniker because the ancient Egyptians worshiped a beer god who appeared to them in the form of a hippo. So clever! I love the way they’ve incorporated hippos into their packaging.

The Verdict: This is my second box from The Craft Beer Club, and I’ve been really impressed so far with the breweries they’ve featured and the beers they’ve sent. Value wise, the cost breaks down to just over $3 per beer. While I can pick up craft beers for less at the grocery or liquor store, I appreciate that The Craft Beer Club sends brews that I may not be able to find locally. I would definitely recommend this subscription for beer lovers looking to try new craft beers from around the country!

Are you a fan of craft beers? Have you tried The Craft Beer Club?
