BarkBox Subscription Box Review & Coupon – May 2015 Box

BarkBox is a monthly subscription box for dogs. It’s one of our favorite subscription boxes – our dog loves it, and we’ve gifted it to dogs in our extended family as well!

BarkBox customizes your box to your dog’s size. For reference, this review is for the small size (our dog weighs 14 pounds)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included.

BarkBox Subscription Box Review & Coupon – May 2015 Fetch

Harry Barker Fetch Dog Toy – Value $12

P.L.A.Y. Butterfly Toy – Value $10

Our dog loves playing chase with a stuffed bone just like this one, so I’m glad we have a back up now. The Butterfly is an exclusive for BarkBox subscribers and has a squeaker and crinkle paper. Our dog Buckles rejected it (he’s a very picky dog), so it will be donated.

BarkBox Subscription Box Review & Coupon – May 2015 Treats

Plato Pet Treats Farmers Market Natural Salmon & Vegetables Recipe – Value $8

These smell like fish food to me – and our dog loved them! I love that BarkBox always includes Made in the USA/natural treats in their boxes. (Sometimes I think our dog eats better than I do!)

BarkBox Subscription Box Review & Coupon – May 2015 Bones

Hare of the Dog Rabbit Jerky Stick – Value $3

Butcher’s Block Bones – Value $3

I know Buckles will love both of these – I haven’t given them to him yet though since he tends to go crazy for bones, and I’ll need to watch him eating.

Verdict: This box has a value of about $36. That’s good for me – especially since we signed up for the discounted annual subscription. What did your pup think of the May BarkBox?

  1. I receive the large heavy chewer box and the medium. Last month both boxes were exactly the same and each had a plush toy. This month the boxes were not the same but both still had plush toys. We recieved the butterfly In one of the boxes. I’m not sure which one. They are not labeled so I always have to guess which is large/medium. My Frenchie had something black sticking out of the corner of her mouth. I discovered it was the butterfly. The whole thing nearly fit in her mouth! I threw it out. I also am annoyed they are sending plush toys in a heavy chewer box. I’ve complained before and don’t want to again. I really hope they get better. We’ve subscribed for over a year and I hope we can continue

  2. I have yet again received the box that a majority of subscribers got the month before. I seem to be a month behind even though I have subscribed for about eight months or so and this really stared a month before my renew a few months ago. I have sent email and they tell just tell me that there are variations to the boxes. I guess mine is called the leftover variation. I also got the tuff guy mat, which is for large dogs according to the BarkShop (I subscribe to the small dog box) when I emailed them, they told me to get the extra small box. I am not sure how that would fix me from getting a large dog toy. I haven’t been very happy with this box lately.

    • I have been a subscriber since 2013 and after my last renewal, i have started getting the leftover boxes too. I’m really unhappy about this but haven’t been able to get anyone at barkbox to respond to my inquiry. I guess i’ll be going back to Pet Box…

  3. I get the large box version for my 70 pound Lab, but he is not a chewer at all, and overall this box has been Ok for him. The toys so far have ALWAYS been plush and would NOT work for a large dog that is a chewer in my opinion. So far the treats have worked, for instance this month he also got a Butchers block bone and it was around 12 inches. The toys were different than the small dog box, but again both plush and he got the same bag of Plato treats. There are a number of YouTube video’s I’ve seen this month that review the large box, but keep in mind there are different themes that go out…so you will see different variations. The Pooch Party pack definitely looks like a better box for dogs that are chewers, I used to have a Rottweiler and Barkbox would not have been suitable for him.

  4. We’ve loved BarkBox . . , until the past 2 months. We have an 18 lb dog and have the “small dog” box (same as Liz – we’re box twins this month). But in the past 2 boxes we’ve gotten toys that our little guy can’t even fit his mouth around! The FETCH bone is so big, Liz, I don’t know how your dog can play with it 🙁

But b4 these past 2 boxes, BB was totally hitting it out of the park for us.

    • I have the large dog version, and the things we have been getting in the last few months are little. I wrote them and they told me it is travel size? One bag of lamb treats are so small that my 8 pound 7 month old kitten who is a GSD wanna be can eat! The toys are so small and fragile that I did not even give my 90 pound 2 year old GSD. My 62 pound GSD girl would play with it, but eventually the big one will get it. I wrote to them a few months ago and they let me pick something out from the store, but I think you can only do it once over a period of time. I pay annual and is time up for renewal. I will pay again this time, but if they are going to be like this again, this will be out last year. I have had bark box for 2 years when I got my puppy, now 90 pounds.

  5. We get the medium box, and neither Oberon or I was impressed this month. We got stuffed boxing gloves, a fuzzy wrestling man, the Farmer’s Market Treats (which he likes okay, but isn’t crazy about) and two roasted beef tails. The beef tails were a big hit, the rest of it was kind of eh.

  6. I really wish there was a review for the large dog box. I’m interested in this sub and have two very big dogs and one of them is a chewer…but without seeing one, I can’t make the leap. Every review I see are of the small dog boxes here and on other sites 🙁

    • Ragan does reviews for Pooch Party Packs for her large dog. I actually signed up for it from reading the reviews and there was a 75% off the first box code for memorial day in the thread that should still be good today. I tried Barkbox once and the toys were a good size for my large dog, but the treats were not.

      • I got Barkbox for large dogs for a few months but I like Pooch Party Packs for large dogs a bit more. I feel that the toys are more appropriate (my dog weighs 95 pounds, currently). I have also written a couple of reviews for other boxes for large dogs — Paw Pack and Surprise My Pet, if I remember correctly. You should be able to find those in the directory.

        • Where can I find your reviews and that coupon code?

          • Total ding bat moment….I found it!

      • Thank you Bish and Ragan!! I remember now reading one of your reviews. You have a Rottweiler, correct? He was beautiful! I have a red doberman (serious chewer) and a St. Bernard so a dog box for big breeds is needed :). 75% off!!! I’m looking it up NOW. Thank you both!

        • Yeah, I have a Rottie. She is the most destructive dog I’ve ever had when it comes to toys…

I think the 75% off ends tonight so if you are thinking of signing up, you should do it soon.

    • I actually just unsubscribed from BarkBox because I felt that the large dog pack included toys and chews that were more aimed at smaller (maybe medium size? or less rough?) dogs. I have a Labrador/Rottweiler mix who is a power chewer and stuffed toys last a maximum of 20 minutes around her. The chews that they send are also kind of small for her. When I unsubscribed they suggested that I increase the size option for my box… but large was the biggest.
