The Music Box Subscription Box Review – April 2015

Music Box April 2015 - Box

The Music Box is a monthly subscription service that sends you music and music-related gifts. They hand pick emerging artists (keeping in mind your favorite genres) and send you new music every month. They offer 3 subscription options: The Box is a monthly box delivery containing items like CD's, posters, stickers, wristbands, t-shirts, and more. Another option is the Envelope, which gets you a monthly compilation CD with 10-14 different artists. The Bundle package gets you both a music box and the envelope.

Because the Music Box curates every subscriber’s package with their individual music preferences in mind, my box will vary from others. This is a review of the Bundle.

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

The Subscription: The Music Box

The Cost: $10/month for the box, $5/month for the envelope, or $13/month for the bundle which includes both the box and the envelope.

Ships to: US, Candada (+$5 for shipping) and Australia (+$9 for shipping).

Music Box April 2015 - items 1

This is the Envelope, the mixed CD that is an option to be subscribed to monthly itself or can also come in the Bundle (along with the regular box). It has 15 tracks on it and, flipping through them, I like a lot of them. There’s a lot of variety, from singer-songwriter to rock and hard rock, to country to heavy metal, to indie and more. Unfortunately, there’s no track list – not printed on the back nor slid inside the envelope with the CD, and the tracks on the disk are named just “track 1,” track 2,” etc. Sure, I can find the names and artists of all the tracks by searching online, but I think they should have included a track list.

Music Box April 2015 - items 2

“Psych,” single by The Robotix CD & Poster

I was surprised, at first, to see a band of kids ages 8-13 featured, but after listening to their single I definitely think they’re pretty good! They’re described as rock, but I could see them being pegged as pop/rock, too.

Music Box April 2015 - items 3

“The Independent” by Five Times August

“Personal Fable” by Pat Llewellyn

Five Times August sounds so similar to John Mayer to me, which I personally don’t care for. I know a friend who’d probably love it, though, so this will get passed along to her.

Pat Llewellyn has a cool rock sound – I don’t instantly love it, but I wouldn’t skip the tracks if they came up on Pandora.

Also included with the box are some stickers, promo codes for music downloads, suckers, and a button.

The Verdict: All in all, I’m happy with this Music Box. They did a good job featuring genres I like, while still offering a variety within my tastes. I also liked the envelope/mix CD, too, but I feel like a track list is a really easy and basic thing they should have included.

What do you think about the Music Box?

I bought my husband a 3-month sub late last summer. He is a music fiend. He listens to music every day and is forever looking for new music so this sounded ideal for him. And he did enjoy it and even found some new music through them. His main complaint was that the download codes included with each box were spotty at best. Some of the links didn’t actually work while others led to sketchy web sites sometimes blocked by our av/malware software. Huge concern for someone with 2TB of downloaded music to protect. This isn’t The Music Boxes fault but someone from that company needs to vet those things better. He also found the selection of what was being sent out limiting over time but that may improve as the service is in business longer. That being said I might buy him another short term sub for fun.

I subscribed to Music box a few months ago and was honestly so excited to get my box. I picked country as my genre and after receiving almost the exact same box that was being reviewed that month, which containing Indie/Rock, I emailed them asking what happened. They said they could not be genre specific and would try as best as they could to get close to what we selected but cannot guarantee anything. I just don’t understand why you label yourselves as letting the customer pick a genre when you can’t actually customize the box. I was very disappointed.

Sara, that’s ridiculous! I agree, they have different genres listed as separate subscriptions when you sign up for the box – with that much emphasis on the genres, they’re definitely expressing that there’d be a difference between them.

The first box they sent us to review (months ago, and their site has changed since), they had a whole questionnaire for you to fill out, and the overall theme in mine was “I like most things except country” and then I got a box with one or two country CDs, so I totally understand how you feel. If they’re going to directly say that they don’t/won’t customize, they need to change their website so that it doesn’t look like it’s promising customization.
