Stitch Fix Maternity Review – April 2015

Stitch Fix Maternity April 2015 - box

Stitch Fix is a monthly styling subscription service. When you sign up you take a pretty in-depth survey about your sizes, your style, and pricing preferences, and then your personal stylist sends you 5 items to try once a month. The fee for this service is $20, and that includes free shipping and free returns. And if you keep any of the items they send you, you get to deduct the $20 fee from the total. (If you keep all five items, you also get a 25% discount!)

Stitch Fix recently began offering maternity clothes and I’m pregnant (due in August!) so I’m checking out their selection to help me build my maternity wardrobe!

FYI – My items are reflective of my style and price preferences, so your Stitch Fix may be completely different!

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Stitch Fix Maternity April 2015 - info

Each box comes with cards with styling suggestions for every piece, plus a letter from your stylist.

Personally, I was really surprised by the letter! It was very personal, and she even mentioned specific things I had pinned to Pinterest (in your profile, they let you link to a style board on Pinterest to give them a better idea of the look you like) or had spoken about in my feedback of last month.

Loveapella Cotelli Sheer Yoke Maternity Tank – Cost to Keep: $48

Kut from the Kloth Janine Maternity Ponte Legging – Cost to Keep: $54

I love the concept of this top more than the actual execution. The top part is actually a pretty mesh, which is the distinguishing detail of this tank. Everything fit really well and flatteringly, except for the arms/very top of the shirt. The arm holes gaped on me, and you could see a good amount of my bra on either side. The back was similar, and it was hard to keep my bra straps from obviously showing.

A good pair of black maternity leggings is definitely on my list to get. Unfortunately, these aren’t them. Again, I pretty much loved this top but there were just some deal breakers I couldn’t ignore. First of all, the fabric was thick and very comfortable (especially in the belly band part), and the legs had some cool seam detail. However, they felt pretty baggy in the crotch/butt area, which was really uncomfortable, especially because they’d ride down when walking around some so I’d have to keep pulling them up.

Another – major – deal breaker with the leggings that I have to mention is that I noticed one of the seams along the front of the pants was coming undone. When I took them off, I noticed the same thing happening to the seam running up the back, too. Even if the fit were better, I just can’t buy something that’s already coming apart.

Loveappella Maternity Gonna Key Hole Detail Maternity Top – Cost to Keep: $34

Renee C Alondra Printed Ruched Pencil Skirt – Cost to Keep: $58

I really like this top, but again there were serious issues with the fit/style at the very top. The things I love about it include the color and the faux-leather detail around the neckline. The bad things are that the shoulders were very narrow and my bra straps kept showing (and there’s a keyhole detail in the back, shown below, that means I couldn’t wear a racerback brawith it to fix this), and also that I had the same problem with the gaping arm holes that I had with the other top. Also, I just didn’t feel as fabulous in this top as I wish I had – I felt like the flowy front made my chest and baby bump meld together into a big bulge instead of showing off my curves/belly as much as I like.

This skirt was great! I love the pattern, and the ruching/style was very flattering. I actually didn’t realize this wasn’t a maternity skirt until I searched to find it online and saw it in other Stitch Fix reviews that weren’t for maternity. Even though you can’t see it in the photo I actually had it pulled up over my bump, so it can actually be a much longer pencil skirt if you like. Even where I had it, I could probably pull it to right above my knees. Also, it was super comfortable.

Here’s the keyhole detail on the back of the tank.

Stitch Fix 3-Pack Maternity Cami – Cost to Keep: $44

The last thing in my box was a 3-pack of maternity camis. Camis are definitely basics to any wardrobe, but I feel like these were a very small “size large.” I tried on the black one and it was very tight. It wasn’t terrible; I could probably be okay wearing it. But I feel like I wouldn’t ever actually get comfortable in it, or that it would ride up and bunch in weird places, like around my waist

The Verdict: I had such an amazing first Stitch Fix maternity box that part of me was expecting less of a perfect box for me this time around, which is what happened. I love the overall style, but the fit just wasn’t where I needed it for my body, and the leggings had construction issues. I think I’ll probably send everything back, but I’m undecided about the skirt. I love it, but I’m not sure if I’ll get as much use out of it as I’d want for the price.

Last month I mentioned to my stylist that I’d like to see a lower price point and she delivered. Last month my total cost to keep everything (including the $20 styling fee credited towards my total, and the 25% off to keep all 5 items) was $229.50, and this month it’s only $163.50, so I was happy to see my stylist respond to that.

All in all, I felt like the style was very classy and chic, which is definitely a look I love. Another good thing about this box is it helped me identify specific things I want to mention to my stylist, and I think I’ll ask for some wrap and maxi dresses in upcoming fixes.

I just got my maternity box after using 6 months of regular boxes. 3 times I have had clothes come to me with flaws. One of which the flaw didn’t happen until after the first time I wore it. The second two were flaws when they arrived. Customer service was great but I cant justify getting clothes that are already flawed. It seems to be a major quality problem with them and I am disappointed to see it happened to you as well.

If it were me, I’d probably keep the skirt, but I’d send the rest back. The other stuff just looks kind of cheap and poorly made. Quite disappointing compared to your first month :-/.

I love the skirt. It’s a great piece, and looks like it will go really well with lots of things.

Also, thank you so much for showing photos of you wearing the clothes! It’s incredibly helpful to see the clothing on an actual person instead of just a mannequin. 🙂

Awesome review! I haven’t tried Stitch Fix but your reviews have me considering it. I’m impressed that your stylist pays such careful attention to your style preferences and feedback.

Great review, Haley. I love Stitch Fix but it can be hit or miss for me. I’ve had the same stylist the last few times and I really like her, though, so it’s been better recently. I think you should keep the skirt…it’s really cute on you and it’d be a nice thing to have after the baby is born and you’re getting back into “regular clothes”. As long as I can keep one piece and not lose my styling fee (which has luckily always been the case with me) I feel I’ve got nothing to lose with SF.

keep the skirt. no reason to lose your styling fee, it’s adorable for the extra $38, and you can use it after baby.
