SCENTBIRD APRIL 2015 - box

Scentbird is a perfume sampling subscription box that sends you 100% authentic perfumes every month. When you sign up, you take a preferences quiz to help them suggest recommendations for you to try, and you can also go browse and rate the rest of their selection to make the recommendations even more accurate. You can build a queue of fragrances you’d like to try or you can let yourself be surprised every month.

Because this subscription is so heavily personalized, the fragrance I selected to review this month is only one of a large number other subscribers may have received.

This box was sent to us for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

The Subscription: Scentbird

The Cost: $14.95/monthly, $14.50/month with a 3-month plan, $14/month with a 6 month plan, or $13.50/month with a year plan.

The Products: One 8 ml spray atomizer of a 100% authentic perfume

Ships to: US

SCENTBIRD APRIL 2015 - info 1

Along with the fragrance you receive each month, Scentbird also includes a card describing the “perfume of the month” for the next month. May’s perfume of the month is Something Blue by Oscar de la Renta, in honor of wedding season. I think this is a great pick, especially because my wedding anniversary is in May!

With your first month’s delivery, you receive a perfume case that fits your 8 ml sprays inside – this card details how to use it!

This is the purse spray case you get with your first month, with the sample vial inside. You can see it closed (top) and open (bottom). I have to say that this is what makes this subscription for me. The case is has a nice weight, is sleek, and feels high quality. It’s easy to open and close, and to switch perfumes you just open the case, pull the vial out, and place the next one inside!

The fragrance I received this month is Pink Graffiti by Escada. (I actually opted to try the April perfume of the month, Clique by Roble, but apparently I’m having some issues with my queue saving my changes to the order of my fragrances. I’ve reached out to Scentbird about the issue.) Pink Graffiti is categorized by Scentbird as “flirty, party, and fruity.” It has notes of raspberry, strawberry, grapefruit, soft florals, cashmere wood, and vanilla.

I like this fragrance alright. I chose it because one of my absolute favorite scents ever is Born in Paradise by the same brand (seriously, you’re instantly transported to a beach when you spray it – perfect for Summer!), and I also like many other Escada perfumes. This Pink Graffiti scent is very light and fresh. I definitely smell the fruitiness right away, and then I’m left with the vanilla and floral notes throughout the rest of the day (at least that’s how it wears on my skin). Overall, I like this scent but it smells a little like something I’d expect from a soap or deodorant. Very fresh, but not too sweet.

A 3.3 fl oz (97.5 ml) bottle of this fragrance sells for $58, so this .27 oz/8 ml spray is worth about $4.75. The sample size Scentbird sends is enough for a month of use, with two applications a day.

SCENTBIRD APRIL 2015 - info 3

This month, Scentbird also included a special offer for Tasting Room, which is a customizable wine subscription service.

The Verdict: Scentbird is probably my favorite fragrance subscription. Generally, I find that the value is better than this month’s was, but that’s due to the fact that I selected a less expensive brand to try out. However, I still see a good value because I can’t find roller ball sizes of this perfume for sale, just a full-size bottle – if there’s no other way to get this small of a bottle, it’s definitely great to be able to get it via Scentbird.

I also love that their selection is so large and has lots of variety. You can find a lot of department store/popular brands to try. I’ve found they don’t typically carry perfumes that have been very newly released, but you can always email them requests to add them. They keep a list of perfumes they plan on adding, and requests for specific fragrances bump them up in priority.

If you’re interested in trying out Scentbird, they offer some of my favorite fragrances to try: Prada Candy, Lancome La Vie Est Belle, and Juicy Couture Viva La Juicy are just some of my recommendations!

What do you think of Scentbird?

Does anyone know how hard it is to cancel once the 3 or 6 months is over? I’ll sign up if it’s a quick and easy web cancel and probably won’t if I have to call someone up to cancel. Thanks in advance!

I tried this subscription thanks to your reviews and the coupon last month. I’m really happy with it. I got KenzoAmour which I can’t find anywhere anymore except online. Need to check for next month’s pick. 🙂

This is my first month and though I love the whole idea, the fragrance that I chose is gone within minutes. I have not had that problem with other perfumes. Maybe it was my fragrance choice but I’ve read other reviews with the same issue.

It’s most likely due to the fragrance chosen. I used to sell fragrance and to my knowledge a glass and metal spray bottle shouldn’t lessen the staying power. One thing could be the shelf life of the fragrance (although, generally, perfumes turn and go bad more than just lose staying power) or it’s the concentration of the fragrance: straight up Parfums are the most concentrated, and eau de toilette EDT) is the least. Eau de parfums (EDP) are in between. Also, when you spray it on your wrists, do you mash your wrists together and rub them? That actually effects the perfume! It mashes all the fragrance nodes together, and can often effect some people getting headaches from perfumes or the staying power. Just some ideas! =]

I love scent bird! I think I want to sign back up! I want the Bvlgari green tea spray so bad! I thought my last month was that but I must have changed it to angel….bummer. But I love Thierry Muglar scents so it’s still a win for me! Womanity was amazing to. Very sweet though.

This is my third month and my picks have been getting worse :(. Only myself to blame. I went for the featured perfume this month, but didn’t like it and put it up for swap right away.

I did just go to Nordstrom and tried a bunch of perfumes to see what I should put on my list, but my favorites weren’t on scentbird. I’m going to email them with my wish list. Maybe they’ll get them!

I just subscribed to Scentbird and I’m thinking that how much I like the subscription will depend on how well I am able to guess, based on the description and notes of each perfume, what perfumes I will like. If I guess wrong I will end up with a perfume that I don’t like and which is not practical to give to anyone who doesn’t have the Scentbird case. I really wish each perfume came with a case, they say they will put them up for sale soon but unless it’s a dollar or two I don’t think I’d want to buy one every month.

I like the perfume I got this month, but it lasts minutes on my skin and it has no sillage for me. I guess my natural scent overpowers it 🙁

That said, I think Scentbird is a great value for people like me who like to wear lots of different perfumes. Rollerballs and mini-perfumes are ridiculously expensive (plus I like sprays) You can seldom get one for less than $20.
