The collection this month is titled “Bali Hai.” Here are the crafts included for this month’s projects: a Sugarcane Necklace, Kora Kona Blush, an Oyster Bay Ring, and an Nui Pocket Mirror.
The back of the card also lists the items from the box you need for each project.
Here are all of the included raw materials for this month’s projects!
Here’s my necklace! I’m torn – part of me thinks it’s really cool and unique, and the other part of me thinks it looks like a mish-mash of patterns and colors. It’s definitely a statement piece – I think I just have to figure out how to wear it.
When I saw that we got to make our own blush in this box, I was thrilled! They give you a white powder (arrowroot), red powder (hibiscus and beet), and a brown/bronze powder (cinnamon), which you can mix together into the shade you prefer. I love the natural ingredients and the color I made, but I can’t get the color to actually go onto my skin. Maybe the powder needs to be finer? They say you can use a food processor if you want, but I don’t have one. I’ll keep playing with this with primers and different brushes and see if I can make it work!
This ring is one of the pieces of jewelry that For the Makers has sent that have aligned most with my style. It’s pretty, sparkly, simple, and geometric – a win for me!
The tutorial has you use 3 gems on each side, sort of flaring out, to make a really pretty pattern. Unfortunately my box only came with 5, so I winged it and made it a little different. It’s still pretty, but less feminine/playful I think. I also had a hard time placing the brass bars and small gems right where I wanted them right away, so the glue got a little smudgey on the plastic base.
I really like the idea of this mirror, but the execution just didn’t work out for me.
Verdict: I loved this For the Makers box! I thought all the crafts were fun to make, and the style of everything definitely makes me think Spring! I really like everything, except for maybe the mirror, so that’s a win for me. I especially love that they incorporated making make-up this month! As far as difficulty levels go, though, this month was primarily very basic and easy. The necklace was a little involved, but still quite manageable. Personally, I’m all for some quick-and-easy projects to get creative – it can be intimidating to get started or hard to follow through with long, complicated, and time-consuming projects.
