The Tiki Box Subscription Box Review - March 2015 Note

The Tiki Box included a handwritten note, which I thought was a nice touch.

The Tiki Box Subscription Box Review - March 2015 Card

On the reverse, the card listed the items included in this month’s box.

The Tiki Box Subscription Box Review - March 2015 Macadamia

Glico Pretz Salad

Shelly Senbei Rice Crackers

Hawaiian Sun Chocolate Macadamia Nut Clusters

The Glico Pretz Salad were long, thin crackers that tasted similar to Ritz. They were dusted in “salad” flavoring, which I thought was similar to crouton seasoning.

I really like rice crackers, so I was happy to see these in the box. I’d never had this particular brand before, but I thought they were really tasty. Puffed up and crunchy, the crackers were very savory and topped with dried seaweed, which provided a slightly fishy flavor. This snack might not appeal to everyone, but I thought they were great.

Each Macadamia Nut Cluster consisted of a few macadamia nuts covered in milk chocolate. They were simple and tasty.

Hawaiian Host Maui Caramacs

Diamond Bakery Lilikoi Creem Sandwich Crackers

Bean's Family Green Garlic Peas

Island Princess Honey Roasted Macadamia Nuts

Maui Caramacs are like Hawaii’s answer to turtles. Instead of pecans, though, they’re made with chopped macadamia nuts.

The Lilikoi Creem Sandwich Crackers were less sweet than most of the sandwich cookies I’ve had before, which I really enjoyed. I couldn’t pinpoint the flavor of the cream, so I did a little digging and discovered that lilikoi is actually a type of fruit! It’s also known as yellow passionfruit and looks like this:

The flavor was subtle, and I liked how it added a slightly exotic edge to the sandwiches.

I also really enjoyed the Green Garlic Peas. They were crunchy, salty, very garlicky, and made for a great snack.

The Honey Roasted Macadamia nuts were delicious too. They were covered in a honey-flavored dusty coating, similar to Planters Honey Roasted Peanuts.

The Tiki Box Subscription Box Review - March 2015 Candy

Li Hing Mui Golden Plum Drops

Hong Yuan Classic Guava Hard Candy

The Li Hing Mui Golden Plum Drops might be the most unusual candy I’ve ever had. Each drop consisted of a dried, salted sour plum (with a small pit) encased in sweet hard candy. The flavor was truly unique- sweet, sour, and very salty. According to reviews on Amazon, they’re a popular Hawaiian candy and something of an acquired taste. To be honest, I couldn’t decide whether I liked them or not (which probably means I didn’t). Still, I’m really glad I got to try them.

The guava-flavored candies, on the other hand, were delicious without question. They were sweet and tart, and the flavor was unfamiliar but still accessible. I could not stop eating them.

Verdict: I really enjoyed The Tiki Box. Every single item in the box was new to me, and it was really fun trying so many different products from Hawaii (and further afield). Most of the snacks were delicious, and I’m afraid I now have a serious addiction to Hong Yuan Classic Guava Hard Candy. I’m already toying with the idea of buying more on Amazon! I wasn’t able to do a value breakdown on this box, but I think it’s fair to say that this is not a high-value box. Still, I thought the curation was great, and I like that I was sent products I may never have tried otherwise.

What do you think of The Tiki Box?

I’m pleasantly surprised that this box captured quite a few of the snack favorites here. I’ve lived in HI all my life and while I thought it was a bit heavy on the mac nuts, I’m glad they included some Asian snacks. I’m curious to see what they come up with next month!

Thanks for reviewing this and for your thorough descriptions!

I like this idea. However as someone who shops at the Asian markets all these are available in which I can get all this for probably 15 dollars in full packages.
