  1. Ugh, I wish these spoilers came out before the box shipped. I would have canceled. I don’t have an XBox, I’ve never heard of the game the print is from, and I’m not at all interested in a signed photo of Naomi. my box is due to arrive today, so I’m hoping I at least get a cute thumb drive and people say good things about the book so I’ll give that a chance (even though I do 100% of my leisure reading on my ereader now).

This box is absolutely not for me, and I’m really bummed that Quarterly won’t take returns anymore.

  2. Hmm. I had been up in the air about this box. True gamer boxes are a fairly untapped market, and, as a so called gamer, this had appeal. However….

While I do own an Xbox (as well as PS2, 3 &4 and Wii), I am very surprised that a platform specific game was included. While it is a redemption code, we include it in the value of the box. No returns and no spoilers may insure more boxes sold, but unhappy buyers are not return buyers. Giving us a choice in platform when purchasing the box would have been ideal.

I LOVE the book. I have it in numerous formats and have pushed in gloriously onto others lol. Repeats from subscription boxes is just part of the game sometimes. Not a fan of Littlebits, but both Wil Wheaton and GE both included variants of them. I have some of the same lip gloss, mascara, hair stuff, lotion, etc.

The thumb drive is cute, but I have several already, and I do most of my backups in the cloud. Meh.

I don’t know who the curator is really, so a signed photo of her is another meh item.

I don’t play Destiny, so the print is another meh item.

All in all, I think the concept is not the problem. A true gamer box is really something I could get down with. This one just included items that aren’t a thrill for me. And Quarterly has kinda lost me as of late. The unprompt arrivals of their boxes, no more return policy (so much for spontaneous purchases for me) and the addition of a shipping price make it highly unlikely for me to subscribe to a box in the mere hope it will improve.

  3. So glad I canceled this order! I got Ready Player One in my LootCrate and I already owned that game and sold it on eBay. Although I own an Xbox I can’t believe they would include a platform specific item. I could care less about the rest.

  4. Meh, I’d love a game, but we do not have an Xbox One. I wish she used a coupon for a game purchasing system more accessible, like Steam. :/

Ready Player One is awesome, but I now have two copies (3 after this). I don’t play Destiny, so I have no use for the poster. I knew there would be a picture of her, since it was already mentioned, but I don’t really need that, either.

The memobot sounds cool, but that’s about all that’s useful out of this box for me. I love that there is a box that is giving video games, but if it’s for specific systems, that’s going to exclude a lot of people. I hope the next box is better or else I might not be able to justify the quarterly cost. :/

  5. Oh, man. Wishing Quarterly’s old return policy was still in effect. Already got that book from another box, don’t own an XBox and I’m not familiar with Destiny. I may sell this box as is when I get it. Nice curation for the most part but I don’t understand why she would include a game for a platform that many subscribers may not own. Eh, I guess when you order a mystery box, you take your chances.

    • To be fair, she’s an IGN host. This is a box for gamers and no other subs for gamers even acknowledge that we own next generation systems. I’m personally really sick of getting stuff for systems I owned at 15 when I invest a fortune in gaming. I feel this was made for gamers and people who are very active on IGN, which was satisfying for me. It does seem that Quarterly is a little more specific than other subs but it is why Naomi is probably the only gamer sub I am keeping. I don’t need more Nintendo stuff from the 80s.

      • I get where you’re coming from, but I feel like if it was going to be a platform specific game, there should have been a spoiler to that effect to let people know so that those without this system wouldn’t spend their money for an item they can’t use. As I said, overall it was mostly good curation, there just so happens to be nothing in this box that I, a pc, nintendo, and ps4 gamer, am able to use or have any interest in. At the end of the day, mystery box is mystery box and I took my chances. Now that I know there will possibly be platform specifics in future boxes, I won’t be taking my chances again.

  6. I am very happy I didn’t sign up for this box. I am not a Microsoft Xbox fan and knew she would include a platform game. With Quarterly not accepting returns, I feel bad for others who signed up but don’t own a Xbox. The book and Mimobot are excellent items though!

  7. This box made me really happy. Although I’m over Ready Player One since I’ve owned several copies for four years (when it was released), I love that there was a full game. This is also the only truly gamer-oriented box I’ve seen. Arcade Block and 1Up aren’t much different from other geek boxes, focusing more on collectibles than games. Besides Geek Fuel, this is the first box to send me a full video game and if she sends game codes in each box, I will stay subscribed.
