Farmivore Subscription Box Review + Coupon – March 2015

Farmivore is a New York-based produce subscription that sends weekly shipments of pre-packaged juicing blends. The fruit and vegetables are 100% organic, GMO-free, and locally sourced. They offer both a “Green Juicing Box” that includes low sugar, green only juice recipes (made with things like leafy greens, herbs, celery, cucumber, and a touch of fruit) and a “Mixed Juicing Box” that features green, orange, and red juices (and includes everything from rainbow carrots, to golden beets to turmeric root).

Included in the box is a leaflet detailing the week’s juices. Each recipe includes a suggested juicing order, juice-by date, nutritional information and produce notes.

Basil Boost (Green Juice #1)- basil, apple, swiss chard, pear, and cucumber

The Basil Boost was delicious. There was only a touch of sweetness, which I liked a lot. This was my first time juicing with swiss chard, and I’m definitely a fan. It’s a very mild green, so it adds a mellower flavor to juice than kale or collards.

Kale Kool-Aid (Green Juice #2)- ginger, lemon, kale, apple, pear, cucumber, celery

I wasn’t sure what to expect from a juice called Kale Kool-Aid! (Spoiler alert: it didn’t taste like Kool-Aid.) It turned out to be a very brightly flavored juice. The lemon and ginger were at the forefront, and there was a nice, subtle sweetness from the apple and pear.

Hi-C Carrot Cooler (Mixed Juice #1)- ginger, lime, orange, pear, carrot, and cucumber

This juice was similar to an orange carrot juice, but I liked how the addition of the lime and ginger livened up the flavor.

Leprechaun Gold (Mixed Juice #2)- lemon, beet, orange, apple carrot

The Leprechaun Gold (I love the crazy names Farmivore comes up with for their recipes) was my favorite juice in this box. The (giant) golden beet they included added an earthiness to the juice that was delicious. On the included recipe sheet, Farmivore provides tips for juicing different fruits and vegetables. For a less earthy flavor, they suggest peeling beets before juicing them.

Here are the prepared juices (in the order they were reviewed). I love how vibrant the colors are. Also, note that this is not the full amount of juice yielded from each recipe. On average, each recipe made about 32 oz of juice.

Verdict: I really like Farmivore. The produce arrived in great condition, the recipes were delicious, and I think the value is good. If I bought the same amount of produce at my local farmers’ market, I think I would spend about the same amount ($39.95), and I believe there’s added value in the curation of the recipes. I like that the produce is local (when possible), organic, and non-GMO. The recipe leaflet provided really helpful information, and I liked being given a suggested juicing order for each recipe and a juice-by date.

I love to juice, but I don’t do it very often because I grocery shop with meals in mind and very rarely have enough extra produce on hand. I also tend to juice without a recipe, which can lead to some pretty unpalatable concoctions. I like that Farmivore makes juicing easy by delivering everything you need to make delicious, healthy juices at home. Receiving this box every week would definitely encourage me to juice more often!

What do you think about Farmivore?

I like this idea, and like you said, the prices are very comparable to those at a farmers market. It would be great if they were successful enough to franchise to other areas of the country so more customers could be served. For now, I’ll just count the weeks until my local farmers markets open for the season.

Love this box idea. Like you I rarely juice, but find that during the summer I have a great farmers market in my area. This enables me to buy plenty of organic fruits and veggies, making it super easy to juice and make fresh salsa. I literally can’t wait for farmers market season, this box sounds good but a little expensive

Sneaky Burrito

This one doesn’t deliver to my area. But I think I could replicate some of these blends on my own with produce from the local Korean market. Might get me out of my grapefruit/orange juice or pineapple/banana/orange smoothie rut.
