O! Fudge Box included information about how to customize the subscription, a coupon code, and a list of the flavors selected for this month’s box.
Sweet Prairie Home Cherries Jamboree Fudge- 2 oz, value $2.25
Sweet Prairie Home Dk Chocolate Cinnamon Fudge- 2 oz, value $2.25
All of the fudge featured in this month’s shipment is from Sweet Prairie Home, located in Bethany, Oklahoma. (The fudge is not available for sale online, so I called their retail location to find out the price.) All of the photos on the O! Fudge website featured Sweet Prairie Home fudge, so I reached out to their customer service to see whether subscribers would receive the same brand each month or if they could expect more variety. They got back to me right away and clarified that all fudge would be from Sweet Prairie Home, but that different flavors would be sent each month.
I started out by sampling the dark chocolate cinnamon fudge. It was smooth, and I liked the prominent cinnamon flavor. I also really liked the packaging. Each 2 oz pot of fudge came packed with a mini spoon. I think these would be great to pack in a lunch box for a special treat.
The cherries jamboree was made with dried cherries, which I liked. I thought the natural fruit flavor of the dried cherries was a pleasant addition to the candy-like fudge.
Sweet Prairie Home Bubblegum Fudge- 2 oz, value $2.25
Sweet Prairie Home Vanilla Pecan Fudge- 2 oz, value $2.25
Sweet Prairie Home Raspberry Fudge- 2 oz, value $2.25
While most of the flavors included in this shipment sounded good to me, I have to admit I was skeptical about the bubblegum fudge. It did taste exactly like bubblegum, but it’s not something I would want to eat again. Perhaps this is a flavor better suited for fans of powerful, unusual flavors like buttered popcorn or tutti frutti Jelly Belly jellybeans. I’m sure there are also quite a few children who would happily devour this flavor- I know I probably would have felt differently towards it 20 years ago.
The vanilla pecan and raspberry were both good. The raspberry fudge is made with raspberry puree and tastes like real fruit (as opposed to fruit flavoring), and I liked that they included a classic fudge flavor like vanilla pecan.
Before I get to the verdict, there’s one other thing I’d like to mention. When I initially unpacked this box, I noticed that none of the fudge containers were marked with expiration dates. My understanding is that not all states require this information to be printed on packaged food items; however, it’s something that I look for, especially on products from small producers that might have a shorter than average shelf life. (This is not to say that I suspected my fudge of being old or expired. On the contrary, it tasted fine.) On February 20th, I emailed O! Fudge Box customer service in the hope that they would be able to give me an idea of the fudge’s shelf life and a ballpark estimate for when the fudge might expire. As of today, February 24th, I have not received a response. As I mentioned above, I reached out to them with another question (also on February 20th) and they got back to me very quickly. I’m not sure why they haven’t responded to my query about expiration dates, but I thought it was important to include in the review.
UPDATE: O! Fudge Box let us know that moving forward they will include expiration dates on all items in their subscription boxes. The fudge in this review was made on 2/12/15, and is best within 90 days.
Verdict: I liked the selection of flavors included in this O! Fudge Box. While I wasn’t crazy about all of them, I think they certainly delivered on the promise to include flavors that were both classic and quirky. As for value, the total of the fudge included comes to $11.25, which falls a little bit short of the cost of the box. I did find it a bit surprising that only one brand of fudge is featured in this subscription, but I suppose it’s not a problem if you’re a big fan of Sweet Prairie Home. Still, I would like to see this clarified on the O! Fudge website, so subscribers can set their expectations accordingly. As for my experience with the O! Fudge customer service, I think it’s a red flag that I didn’t receive a response to my email about expiration dates. I strongly feel that this is information customer service should be able to provide, and, even if they can’t, I think it’s unacceptable for them not to reply at all.
