O! Fudge Box Subscription Box Review - February 2015 Cherries

Sweet Prairie Home Cherries Jamboree Fudge- 2 oz, value $2.25

Sweet Prairie Home Dk Chocolate Cinnamon Fudge- 2 oz, value $2.25

All of the fudge featured in this month’s shipment is from Sweet Prairie Home, located in Bethany, Oklahoma. (The fudge is not available for sale online, so I called their retail location to find out the price.) All of the photos on the O! Fudge website featured Sweet Prairie Home fudge, so I reached out to their customer service to see whether subscribers would receive the same brand each month or if they could expect more variety. They got back to me right away and clarified that all fudge would be from Sweet Prairie Home, but that different flavors would be sent each month.

I started out by sampling the dark chocolate cinnamon fudge. It was smooth, and I liked the prominent cinnamon flavor. I also really liked the packaging. Each 2 oz pot of fudge came packed with a mini spoon. I think these would be great to pack in a lunch box for a special treat.

The cherries jamboree was made with dried cherries, which I liked. I thought the natural fruit flavor of the dried cherries was a pleasant addition to the candy-like fudge.

O! Fudge Box Subscription Box Review - February 2015 Bubblegum

Sweet Prairie Home Bubblegum Fudge- 2 oz, value $2.25

Sweet Prairie Home Vanilla Pecan Fudge- 2 oz, value $2.25

Sweet Prairie Home Raspberry Fudge- 2 oz, value $2.25

While most of the flavors included in this shipment sounded good to me, I have to admit I was skeptical about the bubblegum fudge.  It did taste exactly like bubblegum, but it’s not something I would want to eat again. Perhaps this is a flavor better suited for fans of powerful, unusual flavors like buttered popcorn or tutti frutti Jelly Belly jellybeans. I’m sure there are also quite a few children who would happily devour this flavor- I know I probably would have felt differently towards it 20 years ago.

The vanilla pecan and raspberry were both good. The raspberry fudge is made with raspberry puree and tastes like real fruit (as opposed to fruit flavoring), and I liked that they included a classic fudge flavor like vanilla pecan.

Before I get to the verdict, there’s one other thing I’d like to mention. When I initially unpacked this box, I noticed that none of the fudge containers were marked with expiration dates. My understanding is that not all states require this information to be printed on packaged food items; however, it’s something that I look for, especially on products from small producers that might have a shorter than average shelf life. (This is not to say that I suspected my fudge of being old or expired. On the contrary, it tasted fine.) On February 20th, I emailed O! Fudge Box customer service in the hope that they would be able to give me an idea of the fudge’s shelf life and a ballpark estimate for when the fudge might expire. As of today, February 24th, I have not received a response. As I mentioned above, I reached out to them with another question (also on February 20th) and they got back to me very quickly. I’m not sure why they haven’t responded to my query about expiration dates, but I thought it was important to include in the review.

UPDATE: O! Fudge Box let us know that moving forward they will include expiration dates on all items in their subscription boxes. The fudge in this review was made on 2/12/15, and is best within 90 days.

Verdict: I liked the selection of flavors included in this O! Fudge Box. While I wasn’t crazy about all of them, I think they certainly delivered on the promise to include flavors that were both classic and quirky. As for value, the total of the fudge included comes to $11.25, which falls a little bit short of the cost of the box. I did find it a bit surprising that only one brand of fudge is featured in this subscription, but I suppose it’s not a problem if you’re a big fan of Sweet Prairie Home. Still, I would like to see this clarified on the O! Fudge website, so subscribers can set their expectations accordingly. As for my experience with the O! Fudge customer service, I think it’s a red flag that I didn’t receive a response to my email about expiration dates. I strongly feel that this is information customer service should be able to provide, and, even if they can’t, I think it’s unacceptable for them not to reply at all.

Have you tried O! Fudge Box?

Thank you for reviewing the O! Fudge box, Lindsey, and for helping us discover some technical issues with our customer service.

All the fudge in the O! Fudge boxes is made fresh just for our subscribers within a few days of shipment, and like you mentioned in the review, I’ve made arrangements with our supplier, Sweet Prairie Home, for the “Best By” date to be added to every package. We’ll also be updating our website with clearer information about the O! Fudge box subscription.

Thank you, everyone, for your comments! We’ll keep improving the O! Fudge subscription every month, and your feedback is crucial.

This subscription box sounds like it might have potential if their customer service improves. I think the bubble gum flavor sounds like it could be good. And the chocolate cinnamon flavor sounds really good.

Dark Chocolate Cinnamon fudge sounds yummy. I enjoyed reading the review. We have an excellent fudge shop near us so I will be passing on this.

One additional comments:
For future point of reference on size, can you open the lid and place something next to it so we can see how large/small the portions are? 🙂 Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback. I’ll definitely keep it in mind moving forward! If it helps: each tub in this box was filled with 2 oz of fudge (about the size of 1/2 stick of butter). 🙂

I live in Oklahoma, but I’ve never heard of this sub or even this brand lol. However, the expiration date thing is weird. Like, the local grocery store I shop at has a lot of local products, and they all have expiration dates. So it’s not like Oklahoma just doesn’t do expiration dates or something.

I love your food reviews!
Dark chocolate cinnamon fudge sounds delicious 🙂 i wonder if they are in any chain grocers? the sub box doesn’t appeal to me (since me and fam don’t eat that much fudge) but it’d be nice to try

Several months ago, I e-mailed this company with a few questions, knowing that they were brand new. Never heard back from them. As a business owner myself, I cannot imagine NOT responding to a customer inquiry. There’s just no excuse for not communicating so I will not be a customer of this company.

First, although I know everyone is going to jump all over me for this, I am so tired of all the hoopla over expiration dates. They are arbitrary at best, and are no guarantee of safety or efficacy. Having said that, there is NO excuse for the lack of response. Customer service is everything.

Secondly, I guess it’s a good thing I’m trying to limit my spending & sugar intake or I would be all over this box.

I don’t think you’ll get jumped on over this, but i will add that the expiration dates may be arbitrary but they usually indicate freshness. Anything with oils or vitamins in it if not stored properly (oxygen rich, high temperature, etc), given enough time will go rancid. without an expiration date or a production date it is difficult to assess.

I was so excited when I saw this was a fudge subscription, but there are definitely things I wonder about. For one, not all fudge is made the same way. Some is grainy, some smooth, some very sweet, some focused on natural ingredients. I’d definitely prefer more than one vendor; surely this one company isn’t the only fudgery in Oklahoma!

The other is about how many types of fudge one can receive. If they have traditional types and “quirky” types, I’d be nervous about ordering one or two types only for $13. If I got a chocolate and a bubblegum, for instance, then I wouldn’t be that happy, most likely. Or worse: a solid chunk of bubblegum or the cherries one (sorry, doesn’t sound like something I’d like). And the thing is: a little fudge goes a long way, no?

Wow this box looks decadent! Fudge is my faaaavorite, but I usually stick with chocolate peanut butter fudge. It’d be interesting to try different kinds, and I like how well they were packaged. But I’m also curious in the summer months how they would ship it. Fudge gets pretty melt-y. I wouldn’t be so worried about expiration dates, because when I buy fudge from a local shop or on vacation, they never have an expiration date. I usually eat it within a week anyway.
