Golden Tote Mystery Tote Review – January 2015

Golden Tote Mystery Tote Review - January 2015 Tote

Every January, Golden Tote offers a mystery tote. It can be a great deal since you get 4 clothing items for $60, and one is a new Puella item. (The other items are repeat items from previous totes in 2014).

I decided to go with the Medium sized Mystery Tote this month since I knew there would be Puella item. (Puella items tend to run large and tent-like for me, so I size down in their styles).

If you are interested in getting a Golden Tote Mystery Tote – they still have sizes Extra Small, Small, and Medium available.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

The Box: Golden Tote Mystery Tote

The Cost: $60 plus shipping (Find it in the Boutique)

The Products: 4 surprise clothing items. (Available in sizes XS-M)

Paper Crane Tunic – Value $50?

Unfortunately I already received this item in my September Golden Tote – so this will be swapped!

Golden Tote Mystery Tote Review - January 2015 Puella

Puella Tunic – Value $50?

(48% Rayon, 48% Polyester, 4% Spandex)

I believe this tunic was made just for the Mystery Tote, but this Puella Tunic at Anthropologie looks like it is the same cut (just a different fabric). I’m glad I sized down to a medium in this top. It’s definitely tent-like, but I think it will look great with skinny jeans and a faux fur vest. I also love the oatmeal-cream color.  (FYI – this top is a loose knit, so you’ll need to layer something underneath).

Golden Tote Mystery Tote Review - January 2015 Dress

Kori Hooded Dress – Value $60?

(63% Polyester, 33% Rayon, 4% Spandex)

Golden Tote Mystery Tote Review - January 2015 Hoodie

I’m really impressed by the quality of the fabric of this dress – it’s the perfect weight. Unfortunately the proportions are just off for my body shape – sadly this will be swapped as well.

Golden Tote Mystery Tote Review - January 2015 Top

Le Sample Top – Value $30?

(100% Cotton)

Golden Tote Mystery Tote Review - January 2015 Detail

I love the embroidery detail on this shirt – and it is a really lightweight cotton weave – perfect for summer.

Verdict: Well, this wasn’t my most successful Golden Tote Mystery Tote – but I plan on swapping the Kori dress and Paper Crane Tunic for other Golden Tote items, so hopefully I can turn this tote into 100% a win for me!

What do you think of the Mystery Tote?

  1. I am very interested in either swapping or purchasing the Kory dress from you. Please let me know 🙂

  2. I ended up snagging 3 accessory totes and 2 clothing totes (still getting pictures up). As to be expected, I got some duplicates…particularly with the accessory totes. I did get some items that I liked. But overall I think I’ll opt out of mystery totes in future. I think the odds are better with buying from the regular bags and knowing I’ll get a few hand-selected items I like versus getting mostly the leftovers from the year before. Ah well, ya live, ya learn!

  3. You know it’s a bad sign when the first thing I saw when opening the tote was a piece of paper reminding me that I could not exchange or refund my tote. I have been wanting to try Golden Tote for quiet some time and finally did and I don’t think I ever will again. They are a bit pricey IMO and I liked 1 out of 4 pieces and I wouldn’t say I am picky. I will say I love the first top you got but I think your bag is worse than mine. I got a gorgeous dress that I think is a very work friendly (Sadly not my work friendly as I have to wear all black). I hate that there is a tie in the middle of the dress it is unflattering to where it lies. I got two of the striped pieces. a bit different but I hate the design of these. Not of are the looser at the bottom which just screams ‘This top will make you look fat’ but the horizontal stripes just kills it and it makes me look literally twice the size that I am and I am only a medium. Plus I got two so similar. I HATE getting similar items in the same box. Lastly I got a black romper. The material is terribly. It wrinkles easily and is very stiff. I don’t own any rompers but I actually think I’d like this is not for the material. It’s not flattering. As a Fashion Designer these pieces are an all around cringe fest for me. I have seen some fabulous pieces from Golden Tote but even Feb. looks basic. Guess it’s just not for me!

  4. I do not like my tote. I am large chested and the items do not look right on me. Also I had no idea that the sizing was so off. I should had ordered a medium. I hate being negative, but am surprised by how much I do not like the clothes. I thought I would like them and go on to ordering a Feb tote.

    1. Puella Tunic in blue and white. The positive thing is that it is made in the USA. I am 5’3″ and can wear this as a dress. It is huge on me and very baggy in the stomach area. It reminds me of maternity wear. The sleeves are also too long and go past my hands.

    2. Cut & Sew paisley patterned dress. I am large chested and this hangs from the end of my chest making me look giant. It looks like a tent. Seriously, I could be 9 months pregnant and it wouldn’t make a dent into that dress. I’m not, but the point is that no one could tell the size of my body from the dress.

    3. Porridge short sleeve shirt in blue. This isn’t that bad except it tents out under the chest making my stomach area look huge.

    4. Promesa gray skirt – I was surprised that I like it. I have no idea what to wear with it because it is a gray sweatshirt material skirt. Any ideas? It is flattering and flows. It hits in the knee area.

I feel silly for wasting money on the tote. It is a mystery tote which is the risk I took. I had no idea that the items would be so big on me and unflattering. None of the tops are flattering because of my chest. I will be resuming my position of admiring the clothes from afar and reading the comments.

    • Hi,
I’m just able to try on my tote now. The Puella tunic is a tent like you said. At least for us large chested women. I liked the sleeve length though. I’m undecided. I got a lacy skirt that I really like. A dress that I do like, but my tummy doesn’t. Weight Watchers, here I come. And a shirt that has a nice shape to it, but the fabric pattern… It’s red with white polka dots. It looks just like Minnie Mouse! As I thought, the clothes are overall a bit snug on me. Unfortunately that is the deciding factor as to why I won’t be purchasing from Golden Tote in the future. If they ever offered an XL, I would definitely try the regular months.

      • Tacie – The skirt sounds pretty. I’m glad that you received a dress that you like.

I found the dress I received online. It is the Paisley Swing Dress. The woman wearing it on her blog is wearing a small and said an xs or xxs would fit better. I tried the dress on again and put a basketball underneath for fun. It made no difference in the shape. At least I know if I do buy Golden Tote again to stay away from Cut and Sew and Puella brands.

        • Not even with a belt? I do understand what you’re feeling. I wish the Puella top I got was nipped under the bust a little for shape or fitted through the rib cage partially or something. Well, it was fun anyway and know we know. 🙂

  5. My tote hasn’t arrived yet. The shipping weight is 1 lb. Is that enough weight for 4 clothes items?

    • Mine says the same 1 lb weight. It’s scheduled to arrive tomorrow, so I’ll see then. Were we guaranteed four items for sure? Tomorrow can’t come fast enough!

  6. Got my mytery tote today, still waithing on the suprise tote. Only thing I did not like id a blouse that is not me at all going on the board. Hot an amazing black n rose cinch waisted dress sleeveless

  7. My tote was okay. I got the Puella tunic in a silvery grey and a navy and white striped Lumiere top that are gorgeous. Then I got cut + sew floral top which is very bright and looks like it might be a little short for me. It was banded with a Miss Love jacket that wasn’t my style. Oh well. 2/4 isn’t bad.

  8. Just got my tote today and ordered on 1/6. I only received 3 items. Very disappointing. This is my 3rd tote and I think I give up officially.

  9. I got an xs box and i absolutely love it. I can’t seem to figure out the prices like Liz however. I got the long sleeved puella shirt, that everyone seems to have got, in the navy blue and cream. It is super comfy and looks so cute with leggings! Also got a long brown Skies are Blue coat that has a floral print on the back. A cut and sew aztec cardigan that is ADORABLE on. And a cut and sew floral short sleeve shirt with lace at the bottom (im not sure i can pull it off honestly though). Overall. …pretty sure all items are worth the $15 a piece to make my moneys worth. And unlike most the stuff ive seen…they are all something I’d wear

  10. My Tote just arrived and I’m disappointed in my tote. It may be my sleep deprivation talking ( my little babies been keeping me up till 6am) but my first impression is hate for every item. I didn’t get any items that were in a 149 tote all my items look like left overs. The pullea item is the same tunic long sleeve, mine is cream with blue stripes, but since I’m large chested it will look boxy on me. Then I got a dark navy, long sleeve fawn top with lace at the back, a short sleeve white lace button up blouse. And a bright multi colored short skirt. Maybe I’ll like any of them once j try them on but right now i have a huge case of buyers remorse. To think I almost bought two totes. So glad I didn’t pull that trigger. If nothing else I just added to my swap list. Hope everyone else had better luck than me!

  11. Liz or anyone else – I paid by PayPal and my charge still says pending. My order on Golden Tote says processing. Do they handle PayPal orders differently?

I paid for expedited shipping because I will be at a conference next week. There’s no way my tote will show up before I leave which means I will need to have my neighbor keep an eye out for my package.

    • Paypal is not handled any differently. As they stated, shipping started with XS on 15th. According to some response by one of the Sarahs, they should be finished shipping by the end of this week. Also, according to their shipping faq, expedited does not get your order completed faster, it just means that once shipped, it’s the faster shipping option. Regular is 3-5, expedited is 2 day, I believe. Hope this helps.

      • I understand that shipping began on the 15th. I even posted it below before. Liz ordered a medium tote and has received her tote which means it had to ship by Monday the latest if she selected expedited shipping. I think it is reasonable to wonder if mediums shipped last Fri/Mon, I should wonder when my order will be shipping especially since my PayPal transaction is incomplete.

I did not order UPS expedited in expectation of the order shipping earlier than other orders. Liz has posted before that does not happen. I did it because I did not want to bother my neighbor next week to check for my box. I was hoping it would arrive by the end of this week.

I still don’t know if I should be concern that my PayPal transaction reading pending is a reason for concern.

        • Gina – My frustration is not at you. It is at Golden Tote. I never thought it would take them this long to ship orders. I don’t want to come back from the conference to no box 🙁

          • Hi Anna,

I used PayPal and just got my medium tote.

I would contact PayPal and confirm that payment has been sent to golden tote. If golden tote hasnt received payment then your order hasn’t even processed. So to be safe contact PayPal first and then contact golden tote about the status of your order.

Good luck I hope it gets sorted out and that you love your items!!

          • Hi Blessedmommi,

Thank you for your suggestion. I am going to wait until the end of Friday since Gina wrote that shipping should be finished by the end of the week. I don’t want my box ruined by the weather or go missing while I am gone.

    • PA Anna,
My account still says processing too. I finally emailed GT today asking if there were any issues with my purchase. I’ll let you know if I get a reply.

      • Well, that was fast! I haven’t received an actual reply (it’s only been a handful of minutes), but I got an automated email showing a shipping label was created. I think you should email. Maybe there’s a glitch with PayPal or maybe they’re just now getting to the size Large totes?

        • I’m glad that your order has a shipping label! I emailed them to see if there was a glitch. I could had saved money on shipping 🙁 It’s bad timing with being away, bad weather, and hoping my box isn’t ruined before my neighbor brings it into the house.

          • I sent an email and exactly 15 minutes later received a tracking number. I don’t know what to think about that.

  12. AMAZING! Yes, I got an awesome tote! First the clothing items…
-Puella striped swing dress: These stripes are thin, blue and white/gray? It’s see through, so going to need some other slip? Top?
-Fantastic Fawn ivory top: This top has lace detail on the back. Very pretty!
-Color Thread Black t-shirt with red plaid accents: It’s a plain black tee with short sleeve cuffs and bottom in a see through plaid material. It looks like you have a plaid shirt under this black tee. Totally would wear this top.
-Priddy by Puella black and white striped maxi dress! LOVE!

    But the BEST is…
-Street Level 7 reversible tote! It’s navy on one side and nude on the other. It’s HUGE! Great beach bag/ carry a tons of stuff everyday bag.

Other then the striped swing dress, everything is great. (Even the striped dress is ok.)

  13. Still waiting on mine…but Liz I would love that hoddie dress, we gotta swap!

  14. Do you remember which “style” you chose for your profile? Do they tend to stick to that choice with the items they send to you?

    • They are pre-prepared totes. It doesn’t take into account your account preferences. So it is more of a long shot. I am still waiting on mine. Texans still use the Pony Express for deliveries so it takes longer.

      • Thank you. I didn’t realize the Mystery Tote was such a gamble … I thought they would take into account your style choice (the boxes at the beginning of your profile: modern, hippy chick, etc.). Oh well, I will keep my fingers crossed.

  15. I’m glad I didn’t order this. Ordering online is tricky enough, and these bags aren’t returnable! Plus they have many of these styles at stores in or around the mall so I can make sure I like it before buying.

  16. My puella item was a different shirt. It’s navy and cream small stripe. Light weight with a semi fitted fit. Really like it. I got the small. My daughter is 5’2 and 98 lbs and she fit the top well. So well in fact that she stole the whole tote. Lol

  17. Oh thank God I didn’t get a tote lol. I know all of the totes are different, but they seem to all have the same “style” if you know what I mean. I looked at past totes (I’ve never ordered from them) and wasn’t sure I would like that style. I’m convinced now I would have been mad at spending $70! Or however much shipping was.

  18. This is my first Golden Tote purchase and I got two small bags. I figured since I had never ordered from them before there was no risk of a repeat item from a previous bag. I got the same Puella tunic (different colors in each bag) and I actually find it really comfy despite the tent-factor. I wore it with leggings today and it looked like a dress, since I’m only 5’2. I also got an adorable sweater dress, the same embroidered top as Liz, a blue cardigan and sheer tank with confetti print. The only item I don’t like is this super heavy, oversized swing dress. It has an inside out looking appearance with fringe around all the hems. But is a cobalt blue which is I know is everywhere lately. Overall, I’m very impressed with the quality of the items!

  19. I LOVED my mystery tote–it was actually the first thing I’ve ever ordered from them, so I’m glad it worked out. I got a tunic dress, a maxi skirt, a striped and floral blouse, and the same puella tunic but in a different knit/color. I actually don’t like the puella item at all–since it’s VERY tent-like and I have a large chest, it makes me look like I’m five months pregnant. Oh well. I love everything else, so I’m happy!

  20. Oh dear, non of those would work for me. I got the XS – hopefully not so boxy items.

  21. I would love to swap for the hoodied dress! It’s adorable!!!

  22. Thank you SO much for sharing this review. I’ve been dying of curiosity. Now I am impatiently waiting for my own Mystery Tote.

    • I’m waiting too! When are they going to ship!?!?

  23. I am so glad you reviewed this. I wanted this, but talked myself out of it and now I am glad I did. I like the LeSample top, but I can’t pull off the tunic look and I don’t really care for that dress, so you have officially saved me $60, now what will I buy with my new savings :)…

    • All the mystery totes are different though… I doubt you’d get anything similar except for the puella (though probably in a different color). 😉
