Golden Tote Review – December 2014 Tote

Golden Tote is one of my favorite monthly packages – and I think a good deal of my wardrobe is now from Golden Tote items!

If you aren’t familiar with Golden Tote, here’s a really quick intro: Every month you get to pick out 1-2 pieces, and they surprise you with the rest. FYI – This is not a typical subscription, each month they release a new collection and you can decide whether or not you want to buy it. For returns it’s an all-or-nothing deal. You can return the entire tote for a refund, but you can’t return individual pieces.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Golden Tote Review – December 2014 Flannel

Lumberjack Flannel by Thread and Supply – Value $45

(85% Polyester, 9% Polyamide, 6% Rayon)

I’ve received Thread and Supply items from Golden Tote before, and I am always happy with the quality, so that was one of the reasons I decided to go with this flannel as one of my two picks for the $149 tote. The other reason is that I’m always cold, and looking for the coziest, warmest looking clothing! This flannel fabric is more substantial than I was expecting – it could definitely be layered over a long sleeve tee or hoodie and worn as a light-weight jacket.

It does have a lumberjack menswear look to it, so I’ll pair it with skinny jeans to balance out the look.

Golden Tote Review – December 2014 Cardigan

Everything Cardigan in Black by Roly Poly – Value $38

(60% Cotton, 40% Acrylic)

This is my other cozy item pick! It is very soft and stretchy, with an oversized fit and dolman sleeves. It’s a great piece to throw on over pretty much anything, and I’m happy with it.

(FYI – I normally pick out size large items from Golden Tote, but for this sweater I went with the Small/Medium option and it was still oversized).

Now on to the surprise items:

Golden Tote Review – December 2014 Blouse

Le Lis Cream Blouse – Value $40?

(50% Rayon, 50% Voile)

I love this blouse! I was worried the sleeve caps looked a little too puffy on the mannequin, but it’s not an issue when on. My only fear now is how to wash it without ruining it. (Light and dark combo clothing = challenging for me).

Golden Tote Review – December 2014 Tunic

Chris & Carol Tunic Tee – Value $35?

(62% Polyester, 33% Rayon, 5% Spandex)

This tee is cut to flare out at the bottom. I think the cut is flattering, but it flares out a little too much for me, so I’m hoping putting it through the laundry will shrink it a little bit. It also seems a bit summery for me, so I won’t get much use out of it for a quite a few months!

Golden Tote Review – December 2014 Sweater

Catwalk Studio Striped Sweater – Value $40?

(80% Acrylic, 10% Polyester, 10% Nylon)

I’m not too crazy about this sweater. It wasn’t very flattering on, the pockets in front aren’t real, and the faux leather trim that runs up the sides of the sweater hits the armpit seam in a way that is uncomfortable to wear.

Golden Tote Review – December 2014 Dress

Peppermint Midi Dress – Value $45?

Sadly this item is another miss for me. I love maxi dresses, but I think midi dresses aren’t nearly as flattering with the hem at mid-calf length. This dress also has a pretty high slit on one side, so it’s just a bit too challenging for me to figure out how to wear it and feel confident in it. I think this will go to swaps and hopefully find an owner who can rock this look.

Golden Tote Review – December 2014 Dress Grey

Fantastic Fawn Dress/Tunic – Value $45?

(94% Rayon, 6% Spandex)

This is a loose and flowy turtle neck dress or tunic depending on your height! It’s really comfortable and lightweight, so I think it will make a great layering piece. I’ll probably wear it under a fitted vest for a more structured look.

Verdict: Everyone who ordered their Golden Tote on Cyber Monday got an extra item, so I can assume I would have received only 6 items total if this was a regular tote. That helps make up for the fact that two items don’t work for me. And fortunately I love all the other items in the box, and find them all very wearable, so I’m happy!

What do you think of the December Golden Tote? Which items did you pick?

  1. Reading reviews & considering giving this subscription a go. However, when I went to the site & chose the smaller bag option (allowing you to pick one item)– there were only a few choices. In other words, your one pick is Not anything on the site. Ok, fine, it’s the end of the month and this is understandable. I then clicked on ‘shop the boutique’ to browse and see if there was anything I might want to purchase outright. Again, the choices are limited but that’s understandable if you are specializing in providing high quality items at a steep discount. Then, sure, this is necessary and we all win with bulk buying of High quality items. I found a cute cream reindeer sweater – it’s called the vixen sweater on their site. It is 48$ and available to purchase however no brand name is provided. I then ran the photo of the sweater through google and low and behold: https://pinkcoconutboutique.com/buy.php?sku=02527
It is now out of stock on pink coconut boutique (low cost forever 21 type – wear it a twice disposable clothing). The price was $17.99.
Couple that with there is nothing in the golden tote gallery that can’t be found at marshall’s at a better price & quality. Again, nice concept but I do not think their business model is on repeat business. They will be out of business in no time but in the meantime many will waste their $ — if it’s too good to be true…..

  2. I really, really wanted to love this company but I truly think it’s overhyped. I find the selection in the totes to be generally good but the surprise items are all over the place as far as quality, fit and style. I doubt that value of most large totes ever comes near the “up to $600” value they advertise. I read several blog reviews before purchasing a tote, including on this site, and the overwhelming positive reviews prompted me to purchase. I really believe that most bloggers get much more carefully curated totes than the general public, especially if that site frequently reviews subscription type services. I think the bloggers are all very honest with their reviews – most of their totes really were adorable. There is, however, a huge difference between many of the tote reveals on Golden Tote Facebook trading site and many blog reviews.

  3. I bought two of the $49 totes on Cyber Monday. My first tote pick was the tweed sweater and my second was the everything cardigan in ivory. This is my first purchase from golden tote and I absolutely loved everything in both totes! I think they did a really good job of customizing mine to my profile.

  4. I have to agree. Things are often mismatched and I find myself getting rid of golden tote items more than anything else. Last year there was a puella item in every tote. Now not so much. I wish the stylists took more of a personal approach to curating a tote. That wwould at least make the wait bareable.

  5. I have to agree the quality of the items isn’t that great. I have a dress I have literally worn twice and already has a hole in it. Another blouse I had to stop wearing when a button fell off and my baby found it and almost choked on it. Plus it’s gotten to the point now where shipping takes almost all month and if you don’t order as soon as the monthly boutique opens a lot of items are already sold out. I wanted to love GT but it’s not worth the expense.

  6. I am glad that some of the items really worked for you! I feel like a grinch, but I have not been impressed with the quality of items in the Golden Totes I have purchased. I felt like they were basically Wal-mart quality, and that I could have bought them for a lower price elsewhere. But I’ve never heard anyone else voice that complaint – so maybe it was just my bags!

    • No you are not alone. Aside from the picked items.. and I usually pick a puella item, the quality, cut and fit are always horrible to me. I think I might just be hard to please, but GT is a waste of money for me. I can take the 165 I spent with shipping and get a few really nice things feom anthro that I know I will actually wear. Or eve modcloth… or heck, tons of cute things from forever21! I feel the surprise items aren’t any better quality than 21 lol. But at least I get cute things from 21. It just feela like gt doesn’t work for me even though I really wanted it to.

    • I completely agree! Even when I’ve gotten items that I like and fit me, they always feel cheap.

      • This is my second Golden tote and I have to agree with you guys. I have been following on the Facebook GT trading group. People always talk about how soft some clothes are from GT, but I don’t feel it’s any softer than forever 21/H&M items. and I started to feel like there are so many similar type of clothes each month, ex, lots of casual tunics for December. I will prob still order a tote when I see things I am interested in, but I will never pay for the original price.

    • I started with them over a year ago and the quality was WAY WAY WAY better then. I guess with volume going up, quality comes down. Also, having to mad dash to buy right at noon (NYC time) is nervewracking. I’ve not gotten what I really wanted in nearly 6 months. That is why I think Stitch fix is better, they are way more personalized plus if you don’t like things you don’t have to buy them. And there seems to always be a cheap enough item to get so not to lose your $20 fee. And, you can get higher quality if you want to pay a bit more.

      • Agreed. I started GT & SF the same time last year, and I’ve already donated or took a scissor to many GT items, whereas I adore everything I chose to keep from SF. At this point, GT is no longer a “deal” for me.

  7. You got some items I have never seen before. I got mine a couple of weeks ago and I got a small and large tote and an add on. I picked the shiny Merry shirt and the shiny sweater and got a couple of shiny surprises which I love. The stylists really figure it out I guess based on what you pick. I thought the surprise item was this shirt with the fake leather trim and zipper on the sleeves. I got one in red. I loved everything in my totes this time.

  8. Liz- You should wash the “white with black lace top” with some old towels for the first couple washes. The towels absorb color well and they shouldn’t muss up the lace detailing = )

    • Thanks for the tip – I will do that!

      • I have also heard of a product called “Shout Color Catcher” that is supposed to do the same thing. I have not tried this product but it gets good reviews on Amazon so maybe there is something to it.

        • The Shout Color Catchers work for me. I did not know about using old towels. I only use the Shout Color Catchers when it is something similar to Liz’s blouse.

        • The Shout color catchers are made of magic!

  9. The cyber monday extra item was the red/black white striped top. I attended the special event where I got to pick my own surprise items. So I got to see each designated rack. I ended up picking the same top but in teal stripe. I also chose that ivory/black blouse. I washed cold delicate/hang dry and it shrunk a bit in the arms and in length. Colors did not bleed, but maybe dry clean if you like the original fit.

    • I also attended the event and you got to see how they pick each item and each person got a “stylist.” I didn’t buy a tote because I didn’t know if I would like the items that were the “surprise” ones. It turned out that I ended up buying their “surprise tote” and you got an extra item that day. So I got 5 items for $99! They also had the accessories section where I bought two scarves that were listed online. The owl one (which I LOVE) and the plaid design in a light blue (super soft.)

The items I chose for the surprise tote are:
Cat Walk Studio striped sweater in brown/teal/cream
Cast Walk Studio sweater (buttons are on the back) in black/white
Cat Walk Studio Green sweater with side zip on base of neck
Fantastic Fawn blue & cream poncho
Potter’s Pot super soft sweater in black/white with side zip detail

I hope they end up doing on of these event for each season. It was very organized (although a bit chaotic in the beginning) and had delicious scones, mimosas and other refreshments.

The best thing is that you got to try the clothes on!
