Beauty DNA Subscription Box Review – October 2014 Cleanser

Juara Rice Facial Cleanser – Value $25

Juara Turmeric Antioxidant Radiance Mask  – Value $35

Verdict: Beauty DNA has really been selecting great products for me lately! Juara is one of those natural beauty brands I’ve only been able to try in super tiny samples from subscription boxes, so I’m thrilled to get two full sized products from the line. I’m always on the quest for the next great mask too, so I can’t wait to try this one. Plus, the value is great – I paid $25 for this box and received $60 worth of items. (Beauty DNA includes a second bonus item if your primary item isn’t above a certain value – I think $50).

  1. I love Beauty Dna. I received so far $ 70 face serum and 75$ eye cream. Love them both-high quality. As a mater of fact, Beauty Dna is my favorite subscription yet. I don’t really need 5 products monthly, all I need is just good one product per month , and that’s what I get with Beauty Dna.

  2. Hi Liz, I see that you haven’t reviewed Beauty DNA for a few months. Did you cancel it? Sorry for being nosy, I’m just curious. lol I recently subscribed, and I received my first product today. I’m pretty thrilled. I received Epicuren Bio Peptide Complex Serum. It’s listed at $114 on the card, but I’ve found it for $98 online. Amazon has it for $82. It matched my profile spot on. I had initially planned to only subscribe for one month, but, based on this month, I may stick around for a few months.

    • Liz,

I have the same question. Is there a reason you stopped subscribing to this box?

      • No – I actually am just behind on reviews! I should have a review up very soon! 🙂

      • I certainly can’t speak for Liz, but I had nothing but trouble from this subscription for the 3 months I subscribed. The first moth I received a Dermologica serum for rosacea, when I asked about using it in conjunction with prescription topical medication for rosacea it took a number of days and then the final word back was consult with my doctor. My doctor doesn’t want me using over the counter things for that skin condition; that is why I have a prescription. I then asked BeautyDNA if I should change my profile because I didn’t want to continue to get products for this condition and the assured me that I should leave my profile, but I wouldn’t get similar or duplicate products.
Month number two was fine I got a body serum for tightening skin; I wouldn’t repurchase. I don’t think it worked, but it was usable. So far I have one unusable product and one that I used that was essentially a crappy lotion, so I am really looking for this hair care product in month 3 to knock it out of the park…
Month 3 comes and I get another facial serum for rosacea. What? No hair care product…and a product that is sooo close to one I have already gotten that I can’t use. I was mad. I e-mailed. It took 5 e-mails before I got a cancellation confirmation over the course of 10 days. It took a month to get a refund on my month 3 product. I was soooo disappointed. I wanted so much to think this would be a positive experience. It was not.

  3. This is by far my favorite sub. This month i got a Bodyography Hydrating Mask with a retail of $32 and I was thrilled I got a Revitalash Volumizing Msscara in Raven! It has a value of $24. I dont think they are doing cosmetics yet, this fell under the eye category because it helps with sparse lashes. I had never even heard of the Bodyograpy brand before and want to try more products by them. Both of these products are amazing and perfect for me. I received 2 items this month and neither was marked as a bonus.

  4. I got this same exact face mask last month, but I did not receive a bonus item. All I got was the mask 🙁 I’ve been overall disappointed with the value of this subscription. This is my 3rd month and I have not received a shipment with a value higher than $35. I emailed customer service regarding this and just received a generic response that there wasn’t anything I could do because I did receive a product that was more than the sub cost, but they completely missed the point of my email. I spend $25+tax (because i’m in Florida) just discouraging to see a well known blog get the same product as me, but they get a bonus product and I get a “too bad, so sad” email response. Kind of misleading

    • That’s definitely not OK. I’m going to reach out and try to learn more about how some subscribers could get the mask and a bonus item and others just get the mask. I’ll let you know what I find out.

      • Thanks Liz!! I appreciate that!

      • I emailed them again and wrote them a message on facebook and I have yet to receive a response. Overall, I’m completely dissatisfied with the value of the boxes I have received and how I’m being treated as a customer. It’s not fair to send bonus items to one customer and not to the other when they received the same exact item. Very misleading to potential subscribers

      • They finally sent me a pretty lengthy email but pretty much another too bad so sad message. Saying that no two subscribers are the same blah blah. Not worth the effort if they don’t see how it’s not fair. A lot easier to unsubscribe and move on where my business will be appreciated and not be treated like dirt because i’m not a blogger.

        • I figured they would say that! To me, I dont mind getting just one item since that item already values more than what I paid initially. But I dont like that fact that some products they sent out are just not as good as they claim to be. I thought they would only send out the best rated products. I really dont need a bunch of full size useless products.

        • Well, I didn’t have much luck reaching out so far. I’m pretty disappointed in the response:

“No two BeautyDNA subscribers can be certain to always get the same match mix. In this instance, the bonus product you received met your match criteria and it was more than likely that it did not match that of your subscriber.

I can see from your blog, that your subscribers are questioning the minimum threshold for bonus products. Unfortunately there is no exact answer to this question as the algorithms modify price points based on a variety of factors.”

I don’t like that it feels like the “algorithm” can explain anything. And if the algorithm is producing such uneven value boxes where one person gets a bonus item and another doesn’t even though they both got the same full size item, it seems like a red flag to me that should be addressed. Clearly the algorithm is not perfect and needs to be adjusted.

Anyway – not very good answers unfortunately. Sorry. 🙁

          • Yeah 🙁 pretty much the same email they sent me. I don’t get how the algorithm would give us both the same mask, but I don’t meet the qualifications for a face wash of the same brand as a bonus item?

I really appreciate you reaching out to them Liz! You’re the best!

  5. This is a sub that I had to cancel for now because of unexpected expenses. I hope to restart in the new year. Love reading what everyone is receiving.

  6. I just cancelled this after 2 months although I may re-sub in the future. The first month I got a high value face serum which looks good (haven’t opened it yet because I have a bunch of serums to finish up before starting new). This month I received a tube of hand cream at a $37 value, and nothing else, so $50 must not be the cutoff for a secondary item. The value is still there overall I suppose if averaged out, but I must admit I was a little disappointed with only a $37 value on a $25 beauty sub. I have to figure out if a full-size item sub is right for me. When I’m getting so many sample/deluxe samples from other subs, I don’t know how often I’ll use up a whole full-size product. Still mulling it over.

  7. I love this subscription. I’m obsessed with finding new and better skin products, and this box is always an incredible value. I think I’ve received three boxes? The first was a Skinceuticals serum, second was a huge tub of a Phyto hair mask and the most recent was another serum. Probably the best-value box that I’m getting.

    • I got that Phyto hair mask last month, too. I LOVE it! I wish it had more of a scent but it does amazing things for my hair. I think this is my favorite of the subscriptions.

  8. I received my first box last month, and was happy to receive skinceuticals hydrating B5 gel. I was so excited to try this since I am just getting into serums. After using this for a week my face nroke out with a ton of teeny tiny under the skin pimples, I have never experienced this kind of acne before! so of course I stopped using it, and emailed them about cancelling or sending the product back for a refund. The value was there since it was like a $75 dollar product but I didn’t want to risk it again. Anyway they emailed me and instead of letting me return the item they just said they would send me a replacement product at no charge. I haven’;t received it yet, but am very happy with the CS I have already experienced!

  9. I received my favorite product yet this last time. Moroccaoil body soufflé. Smells wonderful & is lightweight, with a $52 price tag. Something I would have never chose because of its price but oh how I like it & perfect for my skin type. Feels like a luxe spa body cream. Beauty DNA is just knocking it out of the ballpark with my last few shipments.

  10. I just got my third sept box last week. I got the same brand as a clove flower and turmeric face serum. So far I’ve gotten two face serums and one shampoo and mask as a set. I think face serums you an get more than one as one can be an exfoliant serum one for anti aging and one for moisture etc and I believe there are diff categories that each one could fit into. I personally don’t mind as I tend to use two diff serums for day and two for night. You can layer them for multiple effects.

  11. I love BeautyDNA, so far I have received only great products. Jen is very responsive and sweet. I cancelled it this month cuz I am out of fun budget : ( I will definitely re subscribe it. I really like the Juara mask Liz received.

  12. I also cancelled Beauty DNA last month. I like the sub., but for some reason I only loved 2 out of 5 boxes, and of course they had to send me my favorite product at the last month. Plus, I just cant keep up with all the full size products! I only have one face and I still have other products that I need to use and more coming from other subscription boxes. I would hate to waste good products if it expires. (BTW, when I filled out the survey, I marked NO on all body products and only a few Yes on hair products. When I talked to the rep. on the phone back then, I mentioned that I would hate to receive body products because I dont use lotion or those things at all. So I received mostly face products. )

    • I started out receiving a good mix (Wen hair, Coola body sunscreen, revitalash, etc.) and then I received 3 face serums 3 months in a row. It’ll take me forever to get through them.

      • Yea.. I also received 3 face serums overall, and usually it takes me 2-3 months to finish one even if I use it every night. So I had to put some on the swap site, hoping someone will take good use of it.

  13. I just cancelled this one. They kept sending me face serums and then of course right after I cancelled I receive my final box and it had a great body cellulite (don’t judge, I’ve had 2 kids in 2 years) serum. All but two of my boxes have had values close to $100. It’s a great value unless they’re sending me similar full sized products month after month.

    • 80-90% of women have cellulite, no judgement at all more like yep…me too.

      • Having kids isn’t even required, because I haven’t had any children ever and I still have some cellulite…haven’t had any luck with creams, though. Seems exercise is what works for me.

    • Did the cellulite serum work? I have it, too, from having kids and no amount of exercise even puts a dent in it (ha!)

  14. Wow, I can’t believe you got October’s selection by the third of October!

  15. Man I think I’m going to cancel after this month. I’ve been underwhelmed with their selections for me lately, the value the last few months has been much less than yours. Last month I got a cleanser too, valued at $35 so that’s way less than the minimum $50 you are thinking of. I wasn’t particularly pleased with it either, so for spending $25 on a surprise I’d rather pay for something I know I’ll like.

  16. Wow this is a great! any coupon codes to try them out.

  17. I received an item that was $45 with no bonus so the cut off is at least that

    • I received a $35 item before. So the cut off would be at least $35.

  18. Is there a way to request which category you receive? I thought it is suppose to go skin, body, hair (or whatever order) before you receive the same category again, Liz has received skin items the last three times!

    • If you choose “fragrance free,” that appears to limit your options. I had my profile set on that for awhile and got skin items three months in a row (expensive ones, too…). For the most recent month, I got rid of that choice and got a bath/body products (one of which was scented). Choosing natural/organic/free of parabens/sulfates/etc. may similarly limit your choices.

On the other hand, if you *want* expensive skin care, choose all of those things!

  19. I dropped BeautyDNA last month to save for Christmas but I will be back come January! This is by far my favorite subscription. They do a wonderful job of matching products.

  20. I haven’t gotten my September shipment and finally emailed them and the next day I had an email about shipping information. Do they ship at the end of the month? I love this sub, but I they’re shipping is inconsistent.

    • I think they are supposed to ship around the same time each month. But that time is determined by when you first signed up, and is not the same date for everyone. At least, that’s how it always was with me.

    • They ship according to the date you started.

      • Thanks for the answer, ladies.

        • The one time my item was late shipping was because they were having a hard time matching me to an item. I had too man parameters checked, including the fragrance one. Email them because they might be having the same issue.

  21. I got a nice body scrub and body lotion this month. I’m having a mental block as to the brand name (both were the same brand and had “aloe” in the name). BeautyDNA does always make great selections for me, although this was my last month for financial reasons. (Plus I still have more than half of the eye cream, serum, and moisturizer they sent me. I’m not used to full-size products these days and it takes me a long time to use them up!)

FYI to anyone who is interested, canceling seems to be easy. I did it by e-mail. It took a day or two to hear back, but they were very nice about it. Although if you cancel near the time your next shipment is due, that may be too late as they may have already started the shipping process (happened to me, anyway).

    • I have subscribed since April and have only gotten a body product once. And a sunscreen which I guess is considered ‘body’. So perhaps I am due this month also. I opted out of almost everything in the hair product category and have gotten different kinds of things for the face and eyes mostly. Fine with me!

But a body product is more appreciated (by me) in the colder months, anyway.

Now that I think about it, I got the sunscreen the same month I read others got it. Most got a lip sunscreen as their extra (it seemed); however, I think I was mostly negative on lip items so I was sent a beautiful Ahava hand cream instead of the lip balm that month.

So now that I think of it, I have gotten two months of ‘body’ items and four months of different aspects of ‘face & eye’ products, including Revitalash. Probably at least one of those months would have been a hair product if I had not said I was not interested in the vast majority of options in the survey.

I am very happy with their selections for me thus far.
