New Walmart Beauty Box Subscription!

UPDATE: The website checkout may not be secure. I’m reaching out to Walmart and will update when I find out more.

Thank you to Kelly for letting us know about this new quarterly beauty subscription from Walmart!

The Box: Walmart Beauty Box

The Cost: $5 (ships once a season)

The Products: Beauty samples from brands carried by Walmart. (I’m guessing coupons too).

What do you think of this subscription? For $5 I’m definitely going to try it!

  1. Yikes! I also ordering one and didn’t check for https; and usually do – DOH! Thanks for checking, Liz. You have the best subscription box website!!

  2. I ended up ordering this with a pre-paid card. Does everyone realize this is an automatic once per season box? It’s not a one-time thing. I didn’t realize this until I read the terms and conditions.

    • Oooh thanks for that! I used a pre-paid card too!

  3. Wow – a LOT of judgment and condescension in some of these comments.

    • Yeah…pretty much every time Walmart gets mentioned it brings out the worst in people.

  4. After all this talk, I panicked and reached out via the email in my order confirmation and got a similar response as the email below but he also mentioned a “blogger posting about the box without the correct information” referring to this post, which I thought was funny because Liz is my one and only source for sub boxes and I trust her more than this company. However, the email also stated they’ve received a lot of phone calls and emails about the issue but it is legit and safe. Who knew a 5$ walmart box was going to create so much controversy!

    • You would think they would just show on the site that the site was secure – that’s the best way to avoid customer concern πŸ™‚

      • They could have avoided so much extra work for their customer service! The box is a great idea on their part but they really screwed up on the technical aspect!

      • Well, the thing is that they can’t show it because it’s not actually secure. Customer Service is telling people that the site is legitimate and operated by them, but the protocol the site uses is still putting shoppers at risk of a 3rd party accessing their data.

  5. I think I’ll skip this one. My Walmart account has been hacked before, and they didn’t do much about it. The breach came from Walmart’s end of things, not mine. I’m not risking putting my card info on any of their sites again.

  6. I was curious to know why I needed to enter my date of birth when subscribing so I contacted their Customer Support line.
I was told that not everyone will receive the same items, and that they use the date of birth to customize a few of the items at their discretion.

That’s interesting and good to know up front that boxes may vary from each other.

  7. I saw a discussion on this box somewhere and now I can’t find it but I heard that it is 50.00 for the box that comes with the season and it is 5.00 shipping. Not sure though.

    • I ordered the box and was charged $5 for the shipping. The box itself is free and I will be receiving the Fall 2014 box.

  8. Totally was worried about the non https website but I emailed their customer service and got an acknowledgement of the situation, clarification of the issue, and word from the president of the brandshare sample box team that their website is secure. His response:

Thanks for your note about our Walmart Beauty Box. I wanted to answer your question about the mis-perception that our site is not secure. Please see the below information about the security measures that we took when building the site, and take every day, for our Beauty and Baby Box sites.
We are fully committed to ensuring that your information is secure. In order to prevent unauthorized access or disclosure we have put in place Industry-Best physical, electronic and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information we collect online.
We use a Level 1 PCI compliant provider to validate all credit card transactions. The checkout connection forces HTTPS connections and all data from the website to the credit card authorization service is encrypted. Verisign digital certificates are used to sign, send and open all data.
The website was developed to support secure transactions employing socket layer (SSL) technology; using 128 Bit encryption. This site is also secured by firewalls to ensure that no unauthorized access is permitted. Firewalls are an additional safety method that guarantees that only people who know your ID and Password are able to access your account. You will be required to enter your private User ID and Password to access you account information.
I hope this helps with your question. Please let me know your thoughts, or if we can answer any other questions.

    • See, I’m surprised that they even responded to you. It took the better part of a month to get a tracking

  9. For some reason I CANNOT get the link to work to sign up! It has me set up my account, enter billing info and then when I hit confirm subscription it kicks me back to the set up account page….frustrating

    • That did it to me too, did you finally get it to work or did you give up?

      • I gave up! And subscribed to Boxycharm today! Haha

        • Ha I gave up too and now am watching my email/bank account very carefully. I’m about to give into Boxycharm as well. I recently subbed to Beauty Box 5 and gave up on Glossybox (too many weird unheard of products and brands for me), so that $21 might be going to Boxycharm soon! πŸ™‚

  10. I’m going to wait for the site to be secured. While I wait, I’ll decide if it’s worth it to support Walmart.

Someone mentioned that you are only liable for up to $50 if your credit card number is stolen. I might be able to lose $50 but what happens if the thief gets into your other accounts or gets other identifiers about you and opens duplicate accounts without you knowing about it? You could become the victim of ID theft -they can get your cc number without your card ever leaving your wallet. All it takes is one dishonest person to screw you over.

  11. Let us know what you find out, Liz! I’ll be buying this if we can get verification that the site is secure for sure!

  12. for $5 I really want to get this… even if you get just a couple of decent products, it’s worth it!! But I don’t want to pay if it’s not secure!!!!!!! Anyone know anything??

    • Don’t do Walmart so I don’t care what they are pedaling. Won’t contribute one penny to the walton family. As taxpayers we are subsidizing their workers who deserve a living wage.

      • I don’t shop there either. There are other costs for things that go beyond what the price tag says.

        • I agree. Walmart just destroys small and local businesses. I’m fundamentally opposed shopping with them. They could be giving away a free unicorn with every purchase and I would still would not shop with them.

      • I used to believe this too, but then I met a distant wing of my family who are uneducated and frankly, unemployable on most levels. They work all work at WM and are proud that they all have full-time jobs, so who am I to judge?

        • My first job was in a small town in Texas at a Walmart. Not only did they provide me with excellent training, I received many raises and enjoyed my work there. My mom also worked there for many years and enjoyed it.

Neither of us are ‘uneducated’ or ‘unemployable’ but we lived in a small town where there were only a few options for employment, and it provided our family with decent wages and insurance, which the small mom and pop shops couldn’t provide. I know it’s easy to get upset over a company’s practices, but sometimes their keeping costs low means they are also allowed to provide jobs for people in rural communities who don’t have any other options.

  13. Have u heard yet Liz? I signed up immediately after u sent the email about this box and used the link u had in it. ?????!!

  14. Well lets hope for everyone’s sake nothing bad comes out of it. As shown on the website it is through a 3rd party vendor (BrandShare) and like others have said is legit per Walmart as it it found under the Beauty Dept under Specials (on the left).

Admittedly, I am not a super fan of Wal-Mart’s practices, but I also live in a world where-as it is most fitting to my budget to go there once in a while.

I am quite happy for the quad yearly offering, and I think the box contents will be well worth the $5 “shipping” charge required.

    • I imagine Walmart would be more in my budget, too, but I go out of my way to shop elsewhere. It takes about 5 stores plus a lot of Amazon orders (plus making my own yogurt with leftover milk) to cover everything that Walmart would, but since someone else drives me, I’m not even out the gas money. (I cram all my shopping in on weekends.) I can be pretty stubborn when I put my mind to something, though.

    • The reason the prices are lower are for because of all of those practices I don’t support. It’s worth a little extra money for me, and I don’t find it that challenging to shop elsewhere.

  15. I just got an email from Walmart and went to the site because I was nervous as well. The site is now encrypted (https). I feel better about it.

    • I am on the payment page right now and it is still not encrypted.

    • I just checked and it does not come up encrypted for me.

  16. I couldn’t get it to work. It just kept throwing me back to the join page Grrrr

    • This kept happening to me on my phone! But when I logged in on my computer, it worked just fine πŸ™‚

  17. I was a little hesitant at first but, signed up. Now after reading all the comments – I logged into my account and cancelled. It said all info would be deleted. I’m paranoid now!

  18. I wonder if the pic is exactly what they send? If so thats some nice sizes. Why did I find this site before I had money πŸ™

  19. Liz, Have you ever heard of Targets Box? If so do u know when that comes out? I’m always to late. Its like it sells out in 5 minutes.

    • I was wondering the same. The Target box was pretty good last time

  20. FINALLY – a box I can without a doubt resist! I have no interest in anything from walmart.

  21. I immediately signed up too when I saw that it was only $5. I hope that there are no security problems. But I am excited to see what they are going to send!

  22. Well I totally just bought one, I didn’t notice the website address at all before I hit submit. I guess oh well if something happened my card’s almost maxed anyway haha. Hopefully it wouldn’t I’ve heard about this Walmart beauty box for a while that was supposed to launch.

  23. This is legit. If you go to Walmart.com on the beauty department, the link is on the left hand side. There is also a baby subscription box under the baby department.

    • It might be legit, but it is it really secure without having https on the checkout page where all the personal information including cc # is entered…..

      • If you are not trusting the site or having issues, I sugest you get a Prepaid Credit Card πŸ™‚ Liz has sugested that many times over also. Just Saying!

        • prepaid is great for 1 time purchases – i agree – yet some sub boxes ( not all ) can detect when a prepaid card is being used , and will not accept that as form of payment when the subscription is on a recurring bases.

      • In my computer some sites dont show the htts, for example, Beauty Box 5, Ipsy and Total Beauty yet these sites are legit and we buy stuff from them no hesitation. Same with Walmart, is legit but dont show it.

        • You should NEVER enter your cc if the payment page doesn’t have the “s” (for ‘secure’) after the http. The website doesn’t have to have the s… just the payment page. Total Beauty etc ABSOLUTELY have the “s” on the payment page…

          • I didn’t check the payment page just the site, as others the whole site ends in the s. I guess I should had clariffy.

    • Thanks for letting me know about the baby box. I’ll have to get it when they have boxes for a toddler and 6month old baby. Right now they just have boxes for 1st and 2nd trimesters. I signed up for the beauty box though. So I hope it’s a decent box.

  24. Not sure why anyone would want to support a company like Walmart. Not to mention receive cheap products full of chemicals and made in another country. I’ll pass.

    • I don’t quite see what’s wrong with products made in other countries. Just look how popular the new French Box is.

      • There is a big difference between countries. I wouldn’t hesitate to buy something made in France but I don’t use beauty products made in certain other countries. Look up tainted baby formula and poisoned dog treats. You will see that some countries need to up their standards before they get my business. I cancelled Birchbox and I plan to cancel BB5 because sadly so many of the products I received were made there.

  25. So worried they are going to sell my information, like why did they need my date of birth? Never had a subscription box ask for this before!

    • Then maybe you shouldn’t have signed up.

    • When i looked at it, I thought it was just to get an idea of the demographic. Have you canceled your account?

Maybe log back in and try changing some of your info? – Not sure if it will help any, yet it might.

    • Birthdate is so that they can send age appropriate beauty items. Several of the beauty boxes ask for birthdates, I usually subtract 10 years from mine. I am 33 and still battling blemishes and blackheads, and I like bright colors, so I’ve tried listing my bday as younger so that I receive acne products instead of wrinkle creams, etc. The birthday is legitimate. However, site address still shows as http not https so I am worried about ordering. I want this box as it is obviously WalMart competing with Target, and the Target box is well worth the $5.

  26. I signed up! Unencrypted site or not. If someone steals your credit card number, you are only liable for $50 worth of fraudulent charges, but most banks won’t even charge you that because they want to keep you as a customer. If $50 is a lot of money to you, you don’t need to be buying subscription boxes. πŸ™‚

    • Wow, condescending much?

      • Hey if she wants to risk $50 for the sake of a $5 box of cheap drugstore makeup, that’s her prerogative lol.

    • Yikes.

    • While it’s true that most credit companies only hold you liable for $50 in fraudulent charges, be aware that:
      – the same is not true for DEBIT cards
      – You have to PROVE that the charges are fraudulent
      – It may take you some time to recoup your losses
      – Your cc number being hacked requires a lot of work on your part (cancelling it at all the places it is registered etc).

It’s a much bigger deal, imo, than $50. And I wouldn’t want to lose $50 no matter what.

    • That is some logic you have there. Just because I can afford $50 doesn’t mean I want to LOSE $50…being able to still live comfortably after someone steals my wallet doesn’t mean it’s ok if someone steals my wallet…

      • Well said!

    • A secure site would be https, I believe that is the concern.

  27. I signed up using a prepaid mastercard that only has like $20 left on it. So even if there’s a problem, it won’t be too bad.
Looking forward to seeing what Walmart sends out.

  28. I signed up using a prepaid card I load with $5 every now and then for this kind of thing and for those subscriptions that are impossible to cancel but easy to change your billing info.
And secure sites apparently mean nothing anymore – Target, Home Depot, etc

  29. Sometimes to good to be true really is. I think I’ll keep an out for a few days before I sign up.

  30. Yikers – thank goodness for this website! I was going to sign up but was too lazy to get up off the couch to get my wallet. Then I read these comments. No way am I signing up on an unencrypted site. After the Target credit card theft at the register, I am reconsidering alot of my online purchases. Just had a friend whose Paypal was hacked this week. Sigh….

    • I am so scared of having my information stolen that I immediately logged into the site, canceled my subscription…then called my bank and had my card deactivated and requested a new one! I’m terrified now!!!

  31. I’ve bookmarked the site, and I do want to try it out. It is definitely from Walmart because if you search the Walmart page with Walmart Beauty, it comes right up, but I just can’t see putting my credit card information in without the site coming up as encrypted or at least with the https: address. It probably is fine if you’ve already done it, but probably isn’t good enough if you haven’t done it yet.

  32. I signed up and was able to log in and log out of my account every time I have tried. It says that my account information is secure (https), so I am not too worried about it. And there is definitely a link on walmart’s actual site. I am not a fan of walmart and usually avoid it, but I will give the box a chance and see how they do.

    • Liz: When you call, call the headquarters – they have a great customer service department – The # can be found online – I was on hold for 10 minutes. – Maybe they will know about it when you call, when I called they where not aware of it.

  33. whats the deal with wal mart ? half the crap in other boxes is cheaply made in china ?

    • The eyeko eye liner in the august glossybox is made in PRC (people’s republic of China)!

      • I’m guessing most folks don’t pay attention on a daily basis but a majority of major cosmetics are made in the Far East, including China. It’s far from just Walmart who carries such products. In this day and age you’re hard pressed to find products of any kind not made there. If we boycotted them all we wouldn’t have any lifestyle or many beauty subscriptions left to choose. I’ve made it 39 years using these products so I’ll gamble on another 50 more.

        • I Agree. There are very few stores that have made in the usa only. Evrn made in the usa does not meen the tape they use. The bubble wrap the containers that hold the products are not made in china. Walmart does have good prices and its unfortunate for the little stores because it is harder to compete. I try my best to buy local and go to small stores first. Yet I ve Founf it 100 percent impossible for m e to buy made in the usa all the time.

    • Thank you for finding and posting the link – If I would have seen this link first I would have felt better after I signed up. I feel better know that it is legit.

  34. Won’t do anything walmart related.

  35. Nope. I am not a Walmart shopper and I’m not interested in drugstore brand stuff.

    • I don’t mind drugstore brand stuff…but I refuse to patronize Walmart. (Also, seriously, all Secret deodorant gives me a rash. But the clinical strength stuff is the worst.)

  36. I thought about signing up but I had a second thought. Then I had a THIRD thought so I’ve tried to log back into the account that I’ve just created. Well, it didn’t let me go back in. I’ve selected the recover password option but there’s no email from Walmart (it’s been already more than 30 minutes). So I’ve gone back to sign up again – it took my info as though it is a new account. I’m not going back until I know for sure this is legit.

    • I got a confirmation email within 15 minutes after signing up.

  37. Oh no! I wish I had read these comments before I signed up. Now I’m worried it’s a scam because I didn’t see anything on Walmart’s site or Facebook page about it. Do we know where the info about the box originated?

  38. Even though I signed up, I feel like canceling – I did not see a privacy policy anywhere and for $5 I don’t want my information sold. – Did anyone notice a privacy policy?

    • The privacy policy is at the bottom of the page next to terms and conditions.

    • Is all the way at the bottom next to terms and condition.

      • Thank you – I’m not trusting this – $5 is a great price – yet it seems to good to be true – I might call walmart to verify this is legit, and perhaps cancel.

        • Please update if you ended up getting any info. I’m worry now and I already sign up…

        • I called the number at the bottom of the screen and a guy from Walmart customer service answered.

          • I called walmart headquaters, and the person I spoke to knew nothing about it. I canceled immediately. It could be that it is so new the person I spoke to was not aware of it. – In the mean time I’m a bit nervous I entered all my infomation for a $5 box – I wish I would have never signed up.

  39. I was also about to sign up until I saw it’s NOT a secure site!! Rule #1 of internet shopping is NEVER enter your credit card information into a site without https!!

  40. For $5 I will give it a shot πŸ˜€

  41. I was about to sign up for this until i noticed that on the page where you enter in your credit card information there was nothing saying it was a secure website… that concerns me so I am waiting to sign up until I see a change on their site. I wouldn’t want someone getting a hold of my information because I wanted a 5$ subscription box…This does look like an awesome subscription though!

  42. Signed up!! For five $$$ I’ll give it a try. I know it will be samples, but I’m interested to see what Walmart hands out!!

  43. I’m with the rest of you… for $5, why not? I’m signed up!

  44. Finally– a sub that doesn’t make me feel guilty!! A couple of years ago WalMart had the “Goodies” Box of snacks, etc., that we used to get until it was discontinued.

    • I miss the Goodies Co box! It was my very first subscription. I loved how it was only $5. I went and ordered this right away. I don’t think it is “too good to be true.” Target offers beauty boxes for just $5 shipping every once in awhile and I’m sure they and Walmart can afford to do this because they are big companies and then put coupons in the boxes that encourage people to come back at buy the items they like again.

I understand the hesitation from some people, but I personally am not worried about my personal information. I shop online at many different websites and have never had issues. I don’t check web addresses. I have never had an issue with credit card info being compromised. I check my statements regularly and know exactly who to contact and what to do in case I see something fishy on my statements.

      • I signed up for this box before reading all the comments about it not being a secure site, oh well too late now. Plus I’ve have my info stolen buying concert tickets off a reputable site that was secure. So they can get it any time.

      • Wondering if anyone has contact info for Goodies? I suppose I should just email WalMart. I had bought my Dad a 3 month gift subscription, but they wound up cancelling the service before he got his 3rd box. Got an email saying they would send me a refund, but never did get my refund back. I thought it was $7 a month with the 3 month sub. As far as this beauty box, I think it will be like Targets box, and the value for the Target box was definitely there! No foil packets, all samples were either full size or deluxe sample size.

      • I do all that and you can also set your credit cards to alert you when there is an online charge too. That’s what I do, so I get an email the second there is a charge. Then I can call the CC company immediately if needed!

  45. Just signed up!! I loved all of Target’s beauty boxes!! Hoping this one is as good and for $5 who could resist!!

  46. I started to get this, then stopped because I did not see the typical “https” I see on the walmart site when I shop. So even though I want the box – I’m reluctant.

    • Nothing to worry about! http:// beautybox.walmart.com
That is what it says on my page. That’s what I enter to go to my account!

      • Thank you – I just ordered it – I’m sure for $5 they are going to sell out very quick

      • I’m not seeing your point, Amanda. Entering your credit card info on a page not using the secure https protocol is definitely something to worry about.

        • It does have the http on the page where I entered my cc info….that where I got it from. You have to scroll all the way over at the top in the address bar to see the “http” I thought the same thing so I checked to make sure it was there.

          • Pretty much all websites have the “http” at the beginning, so that doesn’t mean anything. It’s the “https” (with the “s” on the end) that indicates a secure web page. So that’s what people are concerned about here. (Luckily, I saw all the concerns before signing up. Plus I’m not that interested in Walmart samples anyway. Target, yes, because I like some of their house brands.)

    • I agree with lily, the site is not encrypted so I don’t trust entering my payment method or trusting the site.

      • First, as a web developer who has done many jobs for Walmart, let me tell you right now, this is a very big mistake, most likely from a 3rd party vendor that Walmart has hired.

Walmart partners with many 3rd party vendors to do promotions. The vendor that is doing this promotion for them has made a very serious error.

Never enter your credit card on any site that does not have a valid SSL certificate (https, green bar, etc).

        • As a web developer. If someone has entered their info, and clicked submit, what do you think they should do?

I really should have trusted my instinct on this one, yet I did not.

  47. As soon as I saw this as soon as I went to sign up. I’m not crazy about samples but for 5 dollars which they tell is for shipping why not. Cant wait to see what Walmart would be sending out.
