Lip Monthly Makeup Subscription Box Review – September

UPDATE FROM LIZ: Some subscribers have reported being double charged for this subscription, so I recommend holding off on purchasing a subscription for now. I'll update again if things change.

Lip Monthly is a new subscription box of everything lips! Every month, they send a new curation of lip sticks, glosses, balms or stains right to your door. The boxes come in many variations, so the products I received may vary than others sent out.

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Lip Monthly Makeup Subscription Box Review – September 2014 Card

Every Lip Monthly box comes with an informational card detailing the items included and a note from the company to their subscribers. Also, on the bottom left of the card they say that if you do a video review and send them the link, you’ll get an extra free product in your next box! (I was also happy to see that they improved their greeting from “Dear Lip Monthly Subscriber” to “Dear Lip Lovers” – way more personal/cute!)

Lip Monthly Makeup Subscription Box Review – September 2014 Ecolips

Makeup by Cherimoya Retractable Lip & Eye Liner in Latte 24 – full size, value: $3.99

Eco Lips Hemp Chapstick in Vanilla – full size, value: $3.49

JulieG Nail Color - .35 fl oz, value: 3.99

I really like the smell of this chapstick – and it’s organic, too! Initially, I was thought there was a brand name discrepancy with this polish (the info card says Jessie’s Girl but the bottle says JulieG), but when I searched online I found this polish listed on Jesse’s Girl Cosmetics’ website, along with their name brand polish (also, I couldn’t find a shade listed on the bottle).

Even though the info card says that every item is available at Lip Monthly’s online shop, I couldn’t find any of these three there.

Lip Monthly Makeup Subscription Box Review – September 2014 Purlisse

Cherimoya Lip Crayon in Fig – .07 oz (full size), retail value: $8

Purlisse Hydra-Balance Moisturizer - .5 oz, value: $16

I definitely don’t need any more Purlisse moisturizers or sunscreen, but my favorite item in the whole bag is this lip crayon. I have never heard of the brand Makeup by Cherimoya before, and the packaging of this lip crayon (although beautiful) feels really light and cheap, so I was a little skeptical. However, the second I tried it on I fell in love! It’s moisturizing, has very buildable pigmentation that goes on evenly, and a soft, matte finish. Also, this specific shade, fig, was the perfect, purple-y-orchid shade I’ve been looking for but haven’t been able to find anywhere!

Lip Monthly Makeup Subscription Box Review – September 2014 Swatch

Here’s a close-up of the lip crayon and how it wears.

Verdict: I have mixed feelings about this month’s Lip Monthly bag. Initially, I was really disappointed that they used the same cosmetic bag as last month. Last month, I was thrilled to see they had started sending their items in a really nice cosmetic bag and I felt they were going in a similar direction to Ipsy (who packages their monthly subscription in a different cosmetic bag every month). I really hope Lip Monthly changes the bags they send out each month; I would be put-off by getting the same bag for months on end. I’m also confused by not being able to find all items in Lip Monthly’s online shop (especially because they all specifically have “buy online at our shop” next to them on the info card).

Obviously, I am thrilled to find a new favorite lip product with this lip crayon, and I actually plan on purchasing more colors! This month’s value also adds up to $35.47, which I’m happy with. I also think that Lip Monthly has already improved so much since their debut in July, and I know they are working to improve their service every month and listening to reviews and feedback, which I greatly appreciate. Ultimately, this is exactly what makes me look forward to seeing where they take this subscription.

What do you think about this month’s Lip Monthly package? Are you familiar with the Makeup by Cherimoya brand?

I just saw on Modcloth that they’re selling the Cherimoya lip crayons, they have it in Raspberry, Scarlet and Fig. I like the Raspberry and Scarlet color a lot, too bad we didn’t get those!

Has everyone gotten theirs? I have not…

Sara

Brooke, did you just sign up? I got mine on the 18th.

I was very disappointed in this bag, I love lip glosses, chapsticks, lip balms, any lip product and sad we didn’t get any in this bag. I’m so sick of Pur-lisse I have a 5 year supply thanks to subscription boxes. The lip crayon I got was almost purple and very, very similar to one I got from Birchbox. The nail polish was a pretty shade, but I have so much nail polish now. I found the lip crayon online for $2 and the lip and eye pencil for a $1 online too. I guess the bag would still be worth $28.50, just not excited about it this month. I don’t mind the bag at all, it’s nice and sturdy, bigger and nicer than Ipsy’s bags. But I probably would get tired of them if I got 12 or so of them. I want a beauty subscription with just lip products, I want lip glosses!

Sara – I agree! Lip Monthly’s whole niche is to be purely lip-focused (with the exception of 1 “monthly mix-up.” I wasn’t thrilled to see two non-lip products this month, but I’ll use them both, so it works out okay for me.

The lip crayon looks great on you. I wonder if the marketing plan is working for Purlisse? I’ve never seen Purlisse in stores and out of curiosity I went to the website and saw it is in sold in a few independent stores. It has a bigger web presence. I like Purlisee and already used all mine up. However, I did not receive as many bottles as others did.

I forgot that I do not subscribe to this box although I think it is a good example of a company listening to its customers feedback.

I think this box is going in the right direction and taking comments into consideration (to a point). This month we got a lip product that was $8 value – a concern I had with early boxes was the high valued mix-up item and low-valued lip items from a lip-based subscription. I just hope they keep lip focused though – I’d have rather had a cheap chapstick or lip exfoliant than a nail polish.

I’ve been keeping an eye on this subscription b/c I’m obsessed with all things lips, but I would have been really disappointed if I had gotten this. If the pur-lisse product is the monthly mix up, then why is there also a nail polish? I have so many pur-lisse products and chapsticks that this does not thrill me.

I would have loved everything in this bag. Somehow I never get purlisse in my sub boxes, I always have to swap for it.

Naimah

I seem to get plenty Purlisse in my boxes LOL. I will gladly swap with you.

Robyn

Well I have the lip crayon/lip pencil and nail polish up for trade if you want

I think I’m one of the only people who was actually really happy with this bag! I don’t do many sub boxes and I ADORE purlisse moisturizer so I was very happy to get another since it’s so expensive. It’s the only product I’ve found that doesn’t burn my face. I also got the lip crayon in Fig and it’s beautiful and I liked the color of the lip/eye liner. I think the color is perfect for fall and will look better on my eyes. The color of the polish was the only thing that was a little bla for me, but I’ll still use it. I didn’t like the dupe bag this month and my tracking email came from SpicyBox NOT Lipmonthly, but I contacted their email support right away and they were quick to reply (on a Saturday night) and helped me with the mistake. Overall I think they are doing a pretty good job.

This month was meh for me too as it seemed way more random but, I got that crayon in fig too and it is absolutely wonderful. One of the best things Lip Monthly has sent.

I was not happy with this bag. I joined because this was a lip sub, I don’t count chap stick even though I am always happy to get another especially natural BUT I was hoping for a nice gloss. My lip crayon is coral, hate the color, I will never use the eye/lip pencil. The cream well I have a ton of it and while I like it, I didn’t join this lip sub to get cream. I cancelled. Not happy at all.

I don’t subscribe to this, but I was surprised at the low number of lip products. I’m so over Purlisse. I would not want to use the same pencil for lips and eyes (for bacteria transfer reasons). I even have separate sharpeners for lip and eye products (bought a 2-pack from Amazon and labeled them with Sharpies).

I still find this sub to be sketchy. It’s lip focused and even taking into account the “mix up item” being included, how is nail polish a lip product? To me it was a random mishmash of low end products, coupled with the ever-present-I swear the company gave away thousands I’d boxes of moisturizer products- Purlisse sample. That leaves 3 lip items, if you include the balm which technically counts, and the two legit lip color items are the same brand. And a dual eye-lip product is an absolute non starter for me, for exactly the reason you mentioned. That and well, it’s just strange. My assessment remains that these are a collection of third party reseller procured items in a bag along with some random (likely freebie) beauty samples. I wanted them to be better quality by this point but it doesn’t look likely to happen.

Brooke

I do count chapstick, because I can never have enough. But totally, totally, agree re: lip/eye not mixing, and just the word purlisse makes me want to gouge my own eyes out.

I like the bag tho! This will be my first month with them (did the $5 deal). I imagine I’ll cancel….
