Homegrown Collective is a DIY eco-friendly subscription box. Each month has a different theme, and its a great way to learn about different healthy things you can make and use around your home.

Homegrown Collective sent us this box for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

This month’s theme is “Summer Essential Home Detox.” Each project in the box comes with a sheet detailing how to use the items included, and providing background on the benefits of the eco-friendly approach. This month, the projects are an essential oil air-freshener, an essential oil diffuser, and an essential oil candle.

Organic Essential Oil Set: Sweet Mandarin, Lemongrass, Cinnamon, and Cedarwood

Organic Soybean Oil

Organic Soy Wax

When I found out that this box was centered around essential oils, I was thrilled! My family and I have really become interested in essential oils over the last year or two. The oils included made it easy to create scent combinations that were summery (with the fruits and sandalwood) or very cozy and Autumn-like (by adding the cinnamon).

The soy wax is to be melted down for the candle and the soy bean oil was included as a carrier oil for the diffuser.

Diffuser Bottle

Candle Jar and Wicks

Mason Jar

I love the style of the bottle they included for the diffuser, and the frosted candle jar ended up making my candle look like it could have been store bought! The mason jar is for melting the wax in, but to be honest, I’d love to get more wax and make a candle out of it, too.

Here are my finished products. I wish you could smell them!

The Verdict: This is the first Homegrown Collective box I’ve tried, and it’s immediately one of my all-time favorite subscription boxes. The DIY aspect was fun, interesting, and not terribly challenging. I’m really glad that the end results of these projects are practical and help make my home more healthy! I also love that they included plenty of the essential oils and the soy bean oil in the kit, so I can even make more of the projects (granted I find more candle containers and get more soy wax).

What did you think of the August Homegrown Collective Box? Have you used essential oils before?

You should really update this post to help other people before they sign up for this collection! I joined before I looked at the Yelp reviews which was my own fault. Mitchell only helps you when the first mistake happens of them charging your card again pretending its your fault that you signed up for auto-renewal (I know for sure I didn’t), and acts like they will cancel your membership & refund you your money…..which they never do. Then they will charge you again & again & again…..and then you will never hear back from Mitchell again. Had to dispute the charge with my bank & cancel my card. This company is a scam & they are making a lot of money from innocent hard working people. Get the word out that they are crooks!

BEWARE this SCAM company!!!!!!!!!
Do not give them your credit card information!!
They will never let you cancel, will keep charging you even after you have cancelled NUMEROUS times, and will not answer calls, e-mails, etc. They have very poor customer service. It’s a shame, because it’s a good concept, and nice boxes. BUT DON’T FALL INTO THIS TRAP!!!!!!!!!

I too am disappointed in customer service – I sent an e-mail a week or so ago asking how to cancel my account, but never heard back. I also forgot my password, and never received an e-mail to reset – SO I’M TOTALLY STUCK!

My experience with Homegrown Collective is different. I have received 3 boxes so far without any problems. I emailed them because I never made a candle before and was unsure how to position the wick with the stick. I promptly received an email and a phone call offering assistance.

This is my favorite box which I enjoy a lot.

Their boxes are great, however, they have the worst customer service I have ever experienced in my life (and I’ve worked in customer service for 27 years, so I’m very patient and try to be understanding). I ordered a 6 months subscription at the end of December and have had to email, phone, and Facebook for all but 1 of my boxes. No one would ever respond to me in person to try and fix the problem, and I really tried to get them to call or email me back. I never received a box for January or March and am still waiting on my final box. I’m sure I’m going to need to start harassing them again so that I can get it. What upsets me the most is that I love the boxes and would have renewed my subscription if they had reached out to me. The monthly headaches are not worth it.

I would appreciate that, thanks. My order number is 956 (ordered December 29). All of my information should be attached to it.

Darn, that is disapointing. You did get all your boxes finally except this last one? Guess I will wait and see on this box.

I forgot to mention that I do work with essential oils. I use Mountain Rose Herbs.

Haley – You may want to change your review to state it’s the July box. The Summer Essential Detox box is July’s box.

My August box arrived today which is The Beauty of Coconut Oil Part 2. The items to be made are deodorant, toothpaste, and lipchap. I haven’t made anything yet. I was curious if an actually coconut was going in my box because my June box had a huge aloe leaf in it.

I love doing these boxes. It is my favorite subscription. A heads up that the boxes tend to come the following month. For example August’s box shipped in August, but arrived in September.

Anna – thanks so much for the heads up! I must have initially thought it was the August box since I got it in August but now that we know how their shipping tends to be, we’ll get that fixed! =]

This looks fun I love making candles. Also craft stores like JoAnn fabrics and Michaels often have wax for candles

I have been debating getting this box and am thrilled to see a review on it. Anyone been getting these boxes? Any hints on September? Or is the August still being sent out?

I got one box from them and I got immediately overwhelmed by the projects and instructions, so I canceled. It was a combo of making cheese and learning to sharpen knives. Both are handy skills, so tht was cool, but I was hoping for something more crafty like this. As luck would have it, every other box I’ve seen from them looks awesome. Homemade kombucha? Awesome. Homemade facial care stuff. Wood butter / furniture care. All very interesting stuff.
