Lip Monthly Makeup Subscription Box Review – August

UPDATE FROM LIZ: Some subscribers have reported being double charged for this subscription, so I recommend holding off on purchasing a subscription for now. I'll update again if things change.

Lip Monthly is a new subscription box of everything lips! Every month, they send a new curation of lip sticks, glosses, balms or stains right to your door. The boxes come in many variations, so the products I received will be slightly different than others sent out.

Lip Monthly Makeup Subscription Box Review – August 2014 Card

Every Lip Monthly box comes with an informational card, detailing the items included and a note from the company to their subscribers. This month’s theme is “Lips 101.” Also, on the bottom left of the card they say that if you do a video review and send them the link, you’ll get an extra free product in your next box! (I do feel, however, that “Dear Lip Monthly Subscriber” feels a little impersonal.)

Lip Monthly Makeup Subscription Box Review – August 2014 Lipstick

City Color Cosmetics Be Matte Lisptick in Phoebe – .105 oz, value: $3.99

City Color Cosmetics Lip Balm in Ulta Pink - .75 oz, value: $2.99

Both of these items are full, size, which is great. They’re also both very wearable shades.

Lip Monthly Makeup Subscription Box Review – August 2014 Pixi

Pixi by Petra Lid Last Shadow Pen in Gilded Mink - .16 oz, value: $18

City Color Magic Balm – value: $3.99

Jesse’s Girl Liquid Glass Lip Gloss in Lip Lock – .05 oz, value: $4.99

Lip Monthly just began the beta of their online shop, and I think it’s a great move on their part to offer it. However, I couldn’t find the eye shadow pen or Magic Balm in it yet – I’m glad they include the values on the info card for us!

I was really happy to see the brand Pixi in this month’s bag. It’s an eye product, not a lip, included as Lip Monthly’s “Monthly Mix-Up” product.

Verdict: This month’s Lip Monthly box, I felt, has significantly improved from last month’s. I was thrilled when I saw they used a cosmetic bag to hold the products this month, and the value all adds up to about $34! Additionally, all items were full-sized and none were discontinued items. I want to let our readers know that, in response to last month’s review, Lip Monthly contacted us and let us know they won’t be including discontinued items in their subscriptions anymore.

What do you think about this month’s Lip Monthly box? How do you feel about the changed they’ve made so far?

I emailed City Color before doing my own review. The Magic Balm was a pre-release and was not on the market yet. I received an update email from them a couple of days ago and it’s now available for sale on their site 🙂 Just an update. Love this sub and their team is very friendly and fab.

I understand what people are saying about the “cheap packaging” and the unimpressive design of the cosmetic bag, but honestly–it’s still in the introductory phase, and truth be told, I think it’s kind of fun to watch a company evolve like this. I think their products and value are awesome, and will continue to subscribe. Also, the bag is huge and at least 50% more durable than any other cosmetic bag I’ve received in subscription boxes.

The fact they’re still in the introductory phase is exactly why feedback, positive and negative, is vital to their longevity and success. I’ve seen many startup subs crash and burn when they couldn’t handle constructive criticism and ignored it completely (or worse, became aggressively defensive toward customers; Makeup Talk has hundreds of pages of drama filled stories about subs that went down in flames for that sort of thing). I think this one has a lot of promise. They improved already from last month and it looks like the early feedback helped them in that regard. So I’m pulling for them to be the next ipsy for lips (lipsy? Trademark infringement issues aside, it could be cute, lol)

Wow! For $10 this seems like a MUCH better bag then either Ipsy or BB, both of which I cancelled this month. If I hadn’t just bought Allure Beauty Box I would have signed up for this one. Between DD and I, this would be a hit.

I was so happy with this bag. I loved all the city cosmetics lippies. My pixi pen was broken, and doesn’t roll up ( it was supposed to right?) I emailed them about it and never received a response back. Kind of disappointing since I really liked the gold shade of the pixi eye shadow

No it doesnt roll up.

Since the Pixi product contains .16 oz or 4.5 g of product there has to be a trick to getting the product up and out of the tube – so the bit that’s sticking out is kind of like the tip of an iceberg if there’s just over 4 g. of product in there…

I was very close to cancelling this one, but I was much happier with this month’s box/bag. The bag is a vast improvement and the color selections were more varied.

I absolutely hated this bag. 4 products from City Color?? I cannot stand the cheap packaging. And the actual bag? Sorry but when ipsy puts “ipsy” on theirs, at least its in a cute, cleaver way. And the Jesse’s Girl lip gloss looks like its for a tween.
I get that this bag is new, but that doesn’t excuse the terrible variety and ugly packaging.

Firstly I was skeptic about the cheap city color packaging, but after trying it out they are all amazing products. Don’t go hating because City Color isn’t a huge high end company. Think of ELF. Also Ipsy has sent out City Color and Jesse’s Girl before so if you want to complain it better not just be about Lip Monthly. I’m sorry but I’m just tired of people slandering this company that is trying so very hard to get it’s foot in the door. They are continuously improving but if it isn’t for you just quit it. And I want to leave you with this: this months new bag was made of a leather material with a good zipper. If you don’t think the design was nifty at least it wasn’t cheap. And Ipsy does have it’s share of cheap/ ugly bags like the July 2014 from last month.

Leather?

Erin

I wouldn’t take another subscriber’s feedback so personally or shout them down for sharing their personal feedback. Not everyone agrees about any month regarding any sub. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and it’s feedback that helps new companies improve. Not everyone wants to receive three of the four main products from the same company, no matter which company it may be. Many beauty sample box subscribers join to discover a variety of products and/or companies. So, that’s very valid constructive criticism for a startup beauty sub like this. As for the bag, it’s not leather but it is a decent size. Using company logo-branded bags is another area where taste preferences will differ. No matter which way you fall on the subject, the company should take in that kind of information and evaluate along with other aspects of each mknth’s successes. It’s just good business. Subs that ignore feedback don’t last long.

Like it! But I am a lipstick junkie to the 10th power! Lol

I love this box for a few reasons. The Phoebe is a gorgeous shade that I’d love duplicates of, and I love leaving a few of the less expensive LM lip products out for my daughters to think they’re getting away with “stealing” behind my back.

I loved getting the Pixi eye shadow pen, that alone was worth this bag. I also loved that it came in a really nice makeup bag. It’s a lot bigger and thicker than the Ipsy bags. I felt the lipsticks/lip glosses themselves were rather cheap, but really decent colors. The matte lipstick is a great color and I use a clear, shiny gloss over it. Overall I liked this month mostly for the bag and the eye shadow pen.
