munch-pak-review-

MunchPak is an assortment of new snacks, along with old favorites from the US and abroad. You never really know what you’ll get, and this month’s box contained almost all Japanese and Asian candies and snacks, although that’s not how all of their boxes are.

MunchPak kindly sent us the Original MunchPak box to review.

Hi-Chew Fruit Chews, Mango – 1.76 oz/10 chews, value: $.97

Rowntrees Fruit Pastilles – 1.85 oz (free of artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives), value: $.85

Candy Land Sherbet Fountain (sherbet with a licorice dip) - .88 oz, value: $1.08?

Jamoncillo Soft Milk Candy – 1.23 oz, value: $.75?

The Hi-Chew Fruit Chews are almost like small pieces of taffy. I’m not generally a huge fan of mango flavors, but I know a friend who would love these!

These Fruit Pastilles are also pretty good. They’re chewy fruit candies with a kind of sugary coating. Additionally, they’re free of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives, which is really refreshing for a candy!

munch-pak-review-hoops

Hula Hoops in Cheese & Onion – 1.51 oz, $1.10

Kasugai Gummy Candy – 1.86 oz, $1.96?

Totis Donitas Salt and Lime Flavored Wheat Snack - .78 oz, value: $1?

These three were all pretty good snacks. The Hula Hoops are cheese & onion flavored potato rings so they tasted like potato chips, and these gummy candies ended up being one of my favorite things in this month’s Munchpak box!

Loucks Sesame Snaps – 1.41 oz (4 crackers), value: $.75

Pampa Mini Cream Cookies (biscuits filled with orange cream) – 1.23 oz, value: $1?

Toxic Waste Sour Smog Balls – 2 oz, value: $1

These Loucks Sesame Snaps are very thin, sesame crackers that I’ve actually tried before. I really like them, so I was happy to see them in this month’s Munchpak. They taste a little sweet and really nutty (which is to be expected). I love the flavor, and they’re even naturally gluten-free!

munch-pak-review-peanut

Kasugai Peanut & You – 3.31 oz, value: $2.36

Kasugai Roasted Green Peas – 3.35 oz, value: $2.38

I loved the generous portions of these snack packs, but unfortunately I really did not care for either one. The roasted green peas didn’t even taste like peas – more like some kind of musty cracker flavor? I didn’t actually try the peanut snack because, whenI opened it, the smell was so strong and disagreeable that I couldn’t stand it. When looking these up online, I saw that the little squid on the front of the package indicated that these peanuts actually have a kind of “crunchy squid coating.” I’m not sure if that was what the smell was, but I have to say that these may just be some kind of acquired taste or flavors for that culture.

Lotte Koala March in Strawberry – 1.45 oz, value: $2.49

I messed up and forgot to get a photo of the box of this treat that I got close-up, but fortunately my husband thought the designs were so cute while he was eating them, he snapped a photo! There wasn’t a single repeat design in our box – there’s over 200 different koala patterns for these cookies, which are delicious. These had a strawberry filling, but they remind me of another Asian, crème-filled cookie we love called Hello, Panda. This was probably my favorite treat in the box.

Verdict: Munchpak definitely offers a much higher quantity of products in their original box than most other boxes I have tried. This month’s box was full of international candies from places like Japan, Mexico, Britain, etc. A lot of the snacks were difficult to specifically find online, leaving me to guess at the values based off of what similar things I could find. As far as the curation goes, I liked that they featured snacks from multiple cultures, but I felt like there was a lot of candy, which I don’t happen to eat much of. The value this month adds up to about $18, so I’m happy with that.

What did you think of this month’s Munchpak? Have you tried Munchpak or a snack subscription box before?

Thank you so much, Kelli!

I really liked Yumvelope and Mitten Crate (Michigan-local, small-batch foods), and I always tend to find something I want to order from Love With Food! As far as sweets go, Treatsie is great.

I stopped my Munchpak sub– for the Original Box I was being charged $13.95 PLUS $7.95 just for shipping– over half the box “value” added on for shipping…

The peas are actually Wasabi Peas, which don’t taste like peas at all. They are actually roasted peas with a spicy wasabi coating. Wasabi has a very distinct flavor that can overwhelm more subtle flavors, like the peas themselves. I don’t particularly care for them because I do not like the taste of wasabi.

Personally, I like OyatsuBox a lot better, but only because I’m just interested in the Japanese goodies!

I’ve seen most of these items either at World Market or Fresh & Easy if you want to restock your favorites.

Yay; I recommended they send you a box to review. I subscribe at work as a treat for my team. The customer service at MunchPak is amazing: I told them how much my coworkers loved it and they sent us a free box. I keep up with them on Facebook and you can tell how passionate they are about providing delicious, unique snacks. Having a kind, dedicated staff behind a box adds to its value for me.

well, to me the entire box was worth you getting the hi-chews! i fell in love with them after receiving munchpak. now i order them on amazon! we got this box for several months, but decided to cancel because a lot of the snacks were so weird. it is a good box, though. i would recommend it.

Certain Costco warehouses sell a 10 pack of Hichews (5 flavors, 2 sticks of each) for 5 or 6 dollars. These are very popular in LA 🙂

thanks! i don’t have a subscription to Costco and found the 10-pack of 5 flavors online… i can’t wait to get them! the mango flavor is addicting! i found out about hi-chews because of this box… well worth it!

That one does contain a lot of quantity/variety — something that is lacking in many snack boxes. (I get amazing values in beauty boxes but snack boxes often barely break even for me, and I don’t know why that is.) I tend to stay away from Asian snacks, though, because I’m a vegetarian and I can’t read the ingredients on non-English packages.

I know what you mean with that concern about Asian snacks, and this box did include a lot of those (and Mexican, and British, etc). When I was looking at previous Munchpak boxes, it seemed like they don’t consistently feature international snacks in their boxes, so it could still be worth the try!

Well, maybe I’ll check out some reviews of past boxes. I can deal with one box of stuff I can’t eat (thankfully I don’t have any allergies) on occasion. And I’m getting a little tired of the same old things (Beanfield’s chips, anyone?) that I’ve been getting in the vegan snack boxes.
