Mitten Crate Subscription Box Review - July

Mitten Crate is a monthly subscription box that delivers a carefully curated selection of delicious food, crafted in small batches by independent food producers from around the great state of Michigan. Every month you’ll receive 4-6 local artisan foods to sample and enjoy.

Mitten Crate kindly sent us this box to review.

Mitten Crate Subscription Box Review - July 2014 Soda

Proper Soda Co. Hop Soda – 8.4 fl oz, value: $2

Cooper Street Cookies White Chocolate Michigan Cherry – 9 oz, value: $5.99

I don’t drink beer, so I’m really not sure what to make of this Hop Soda (to be clear, it’s non-alcoholic, but hops are a common flavoring and stability agent in beer). I’m really tempted to try it out, but if I don’t like it, it’s all wasted. This will be passed along to my sister!

I’m thrilled that they included a full package of these cookies/biscotti! It’s delicious and I know my family will love sharing these with me.

Mitten Crate Subscription Box Review - July 2014 Fit Mix

McClure’s Kettle Cooked Potato Chips in Bloody Mary – 1.5 oz, value: $.90

Germack Fit Mix, Power – 9 oz , value: $6.99

Trail mix (and nuts in general, really) is something I just really never care for, but this Fit Mix is actually amazing. Somehow, they made the nuts taste really great, and the dried fruit is really flavorful and abundant throughout the mix to add a bit of sweetness and balance. This mix is made of pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, almonds, cashews, peanuts, pecans, dried apples, dried blueberries, dried cranberries, and dried mangos.

Mitten Crate Subscription Box Review - July 2014 Floozie

Populace Coffee, Loud Mouth Blend – 1 oz?, value: $1.50?

Gus & Grey Floozie Jam – 10 oz, value: $7

There wasn’t much information listed on this sample of the Populace Coffee, but the website says that this Loud Mouth roast has some flavors of candy apple and glazed donut, so I’m definitely excited to try it out!

This Floozie Jam (Peach Bourbon Vanilla Jam) is my favorite item in the whole box. I’ve never tasted vanilla in a jam before and it’s so sweet and adds a lot of dimension to the flavor. Their website suggests it on pancakes, waffles, and ice cream!

The Verdict: As a Michigander, I’m really proud to say that I’m very happy with the curation of this box! I love seeing my home state represented well, and I’ve been dying to try out a Michigan-local box! I don’t think this box had a theme, but the Bloody Mary flavored chips, Hops soda, and Peach Bourbon Vanilla Jam all seemed to tie in together, which I liked. The value comes out to about $25, which isn’t awesome for a $35 box, however I know I found at least 2 things I will buy, and some other reviews I found online look like the value is generally higher.

What do you think of this box? Have you tried any locally-sourced boxes before?

I realize this is an old review, but since my parents recently moved back to Michigan I thought this would be a nice housewarming present. I thought I’d read any reviews on Mitten Crate I could find. Neither of my folks drink, so I don’t think they would’ve given this box a chance. I would’ve loved this one though! I have faith most boxes aren’t centered around alcohol and still intend to purchase one for them.

I just had to comment when I saw the coffee was from Populace! That’s in my town. Woot woot!

I am from Michigan too! 🙂 I enjoy that they are starting to do Michigan boxes. I might get these as gifts for my friends and family.

Susan – I was thrilled to see a box about Michigan products! I’ve often wondered if I could handle starting one myself! I’m always happy to get Michigan more positive exposure to the rest of the country. =]

I can’t hate on the value knowing that part of what I paid goes to a food bank, all food banks are pretty much my charitable soft spot, and the sizes in here are great. I’m from illinois so I bet I can get a lot of these products rather easily if I were to enjoy them after trying….I think this would make a great gift beyond your typical cheesy gift baskets to some one for a holiday or occasion!
