Food for the Southern Soul Charleston Gold Aromatic Rice – 1 lb; value: $6.49
Haypenny Confections Bourbon and Praline ‘Mallows – 6.2 oz (1 dozen); value: $10
Rice is a staple in my household, so I was very glad to see this Aromatic Rice from Food for the Southern Soul! Their website says that this rice is non-GMO and characterized by its golden hull and nutty flavor.
Haypenny Confections makes their marshmallows in small batches, to order, to ensure freshness. They also use all local ingredients for their flavored marshmallows.
I absolutely love gourmet marshmallows, but I don’t care for bourbon so these will get passed along to a friend!
Born Again Heartwoods Spatula – value: $8
Botany Bay Sea Salt – 4 oz; value: $10
Because of the fact that the Charleston Epicurean box is designed to include local items, I couldn’t find a way to actually purchase either of these items online and I had to directly contact Charleston Epicurean to inquire about price values; Botany Bay Sea Salt confirmed that they currently only sell in-state, and the only website I could find to them is through their Facebook page. I actually really enjoyed using this salt in my cooking, though – I thought it just added a little more depth in flavor than regular table salt typically does.
Charleston Sweetgrass Luxurious Bar Soap: 5 oz; value: $6
Sea is for Caramel Chocolate Bar: 2 oz; value: $5
This chocolate bar was my favorite item in the box. The caramel is inside a chocolate shell, and the salt adds just a little bit of texture and a great balance to the sweetness. I liked it, but I just don’t know if I could find it in me to buy one chocolate bar at the price of $5 online.
Verdict: I’m very interested in seeing what the future holds for this box, and I love that every product is full-sized. However, I would love to see some way to purchase all items included in the boxes online, even if exclusively and in limited amounts through some kind of Charleston Epicurean shop or something for items like the sea salt that are not available online already. I’m happy with the value for this box, and I definitely hope they consistently keep up great value.
