Summer’s here and we can already picture it: a cooler and a frisbee on the beach; sandwiches and a bottle of wine at your favorite picnic spot; a good book and some shade in the park.

We built this box for soaking up some sun and enjoying the long summer days and beyond. Reach for it whether you’re packing for an all-day adventure or just stepping outside for some fresh air.

Oversized Linen Blanket, 6.5′ x 4.5′, Go-Throw – Value $120

Move over, cotton. This oversized blanket — seriously, this thing is huge at 6.5′ x 4.5′ — is made from carefully sourced, prized linen. What’s that mean, exactly? Well, linen is lighter, thinner, twice as absorbent, faster drying, three times stronger, and sand- and dirt-repellant when compared to cotton.

And then there are all the thought-through details. Even though it’s twice as big as a beach towel, it folds to the size of a newspaper that’s easy to fit into a backpack or beach bag. The built-in straps help it to roll up and tie closed, and corner pockets keep the blanket in place when filled with some sand or dirt. It’ll be a reliable companion on any of your trips to the great outdoors, whether it’s a summer trip to the shore or a picnic amid the fall foliage.

Chess/Checkers Roll-up Kit, 15″ x 15″ Canvas & 32 chess / checker pieces

When you’re lounging in the sun, break out an old favorite. This set doubles as both a chess and checkers kit and is easy to stow in your bag for an afternoon trip to relax outside. The board is made from outdoor-capable canvas screenprinted in South Carolina, which rolls up for easy travel, and the wood playing pieces come stowed in linen bags so it’s easy to keep them together.

Now all you need is good weather.

With the bright summer finally here, we channeled our best McQueen to bring you our favorite sun-blocking essentials.

Dharma Eyewear Co.’s classic shades are designed with versatility in mind. Keep them on daily standby, or add them to your rotation of other pairs. To keep ‘em safe and sound, we’ve matched them with a Line of Trade’s made in the USA leather case that’s every bit as sharp. You’ll be just as proud of it as you are of the sunglasses inside.

Polarized Sunglasses, Dharma Eyewear Co. – Value $99

The squared take on a classic, wear-with-anything wayfarer shape means that these sun-fighting heavy hitters suit most any face. They’ll complement your chambray shirt and faded denim just as easily as a cotton suit. The construction is solid as a rock thanks to high-grade acetate and ion-plated metal, and pack shatter-proof, anti-scratch, UV-protecting, polarized lenses (the mark of a quality pair).

Custom Leather Case, Line of Trade – Value $60

This pulls out all the stops to easily surpass anything that came with your last pair. Your new shades (or any others you want to protect) fit snugly inside for protection against scratched lenses and bent frames. The leather was custom made in the U.S.A. by S.B. Foot Tanning Co., the same guys behind tough-as-nails Red Wing boots. It’s got a full and natural grain that’s dyed with durable color and then oiled to a perfect texture. When you pull up on the surface, the leather gets lighter in that area as a result of the oils migrating. It’s the look of well-crafted stuff, so get ready for compliments once it comes out of your bag.

We’ve also packed in some extras to help fight the sun. A microfiber pouch will keep your shades clean and those lenses looking crystal clear. And Waterman’s SPF lip balm keeps your lips sunburn-free all summer long.

What do you think of the options this month? I can’t wait to get a Go-Throw!

  1. I can’t decide. The blanket looks nice but not sure $45 nice. The glasses are great but we have so many living here in az.
    What will you get Liz?

    • I’m considering getting both 🙂 But I definitely want the blanket one since it is double the size of a beach towel – seems like I’ll get a lot of use out of it this summer! 🙂
