ModCloth Stylish Surprise Box Review Card

After posting about ModCloth’s Stylish Surprise a few days ago, it took me a few minutes of reading comments to get swept up in the excitement and I had to buy! (I used to work at ModCloth, so this is the first time I was able to actually buy one since this mystery box is never eligible for employee purchase). Needless to say, I was double excited for this box to show up!

The Box: ModCloth Stylish Surprise (Currently size small in apparel is still available).

The Cost: $5 for a Mystery Accessory item, $10 for Clothing, and $10 for shoes

The Products: Anything and everything that ModCloth sells – ranging from $9.99 t0 $299.99!

Ships to: Everywhere!

ModCloth Stylish Surprise Box Review Shoe Boxes

Since I hate paying shipping – even if it is only $4 – I decided to get 3 pairs of shoes and 2 apparel items for $50 so I could get free shipping. (The accessories had already sold out by the time I placed my order).

First up – the shoes:

ModCloth Stylish Surprise Box Review Chelsea Crew

Chelsea Crew T-Straps – Value $65

These aren’t available for purchase anymore, but similar styles are all the same price, so I feel confident about that value estimate!

ModCloth Stylish Surprise Box Review Side View

I actually own a few pair of Chelsea Crew shows, so I was happy to see the brand in the box! I don’t think these are a perfect fit though, so I may end up swapping/gifting them.

ModCloth Stylish Surprise Box Review Heels

Styluxe Heels – Value $50

I can’t find these shoes anywhere online, so I’m guessing on the price.

ModCloth Stylish Surprise Box Review Heels Side

They have a great retro look to them, but can’t wear heels without a strap to keep my foot in my shoe – so again swap or gift!

ModCloth Stylish Surprise Box Review Boots

Qupid Boots – Value $45

Yay for boots! These fit great and I love the style too – finally a win!

ModCloth Stylish Surprise Box Review Clothing

Now onto my two apparel mystery items:

ModCloth Stylish Surprise Box Review Pink Dress

YA Strappy Dress – Value $50?

This dress is cute from the front…

ModCloth Stylish Surprise Box Review Dress Back

And a real bra-puzzler from the back! I think I may try it over a black body-con slip dress though, because the color is fun and the fit is flattering.

ModCloth Stylish Surprise Box Review Tulle

Tulle Print Dress -Value $70

This seems like the perfect dress for any special occasions this spring. And I like the brand Tulle too! (This is normally a pretty bright print for me, and I probably wouldn’t have bought it if I had seen it online, but after trying it on I think it is my favorite item in the box!)

Verdict: I paid $50 for this box and received nearly $300 worth of items. Even though about half the items aren’t perfect for me – I think I’m hooked on Stylish Surprise boxes now! Did your Stylish Surprise box show up yet? What did you get?

FYI – you can swap Stylish Surpise items, and if you got items you want to share with the group, email me pictures and I’ll add them to the post! (I really want to see what everyone gets!)

  1. This was my first experience shopping with ModCloth but it certainly won’t be my last! I’m just bummed that I only ordered one of each of the Clothing and Shoe boxes (the Accessory box and the Apartment boxes were sold out before I could snag them)! I pretty much loathe the clothing item – a “medium” top that is pretty much an XL in the style and the color of a Home Depot apron. BUT, I am so thrilled with my shoe surprise that who cares about the not so cute top?! I received a pair of knee length Lucky Brand boots in brown leather. They have laces to mid-calf but zippers the length of the boot. I found them at Macy’s where they were listed with an original retail price of $199. Can’t wait to wear them!

  2. Got my box today & LOVE IT!! My clothing items were a black see-through shirt with lace at the neck & sleeves and a red & white striped nautical style dress. My shoes are 2 pairs of black boots, one slip on & one lace up. The accessories were a peach to orange necklace & a pair of red earrings with anchors on them.
I like everything & I’m glad I ordered. I’d definitely do it again.

  3. I received a lovely red calf-length skirt with button-on straps, so it could be worn as a jumper. It’s fully lined an good quality. The shoes though, were a dud. Mint green moccasins that were too narrow. The left shoe had a dirty and scuffed toe–I think they were someone else’s return!

  4. I got mine today and though the anticipation was fun, I’m a bit disappointed. After seeing all the high end dresses and shoes other people received, I was let down by the poor quality of my clothing items. I got a rainbow striped/black lace top dress, a tribal print see thru top, a green print cotton dress, and a flowy mint top with lace accents (which was my favorite thing in the box). My shoes were a pair of Pierre Dumas boots with diagonal zippers. Not only do they look plastic and cheap, they smell gross (they’re actually stinking up my apartment and I’m considering throwing them away). Out of 5 things ordered, I can’t believe I didn’t get 1 higher end thing. But . . . that’s the chance I took and I’m ok with it. 🙂

  5. Order size large, they sent a medium sized item (only got one item) so told hem, they credit my account $10 so not to shabby

  6. How often do they so this sale? I missed out this time but want to be ready for the next one!

  7. I got my stylish surprise shoe box yesterday and I loved what I got! I got a pair of dark brown leather Qupid boots and they fit nice. I got really lucky!

  8. Ugh, my box was a dud! I think I’m over these “stylish” surprise boxes. I got a floral dress that is about 10 years too young for me and some little moto booties that aren’t bad, just not my style. That being said the dress is really cute on and has a great fit. Just about to put them up in the swap section.

  9. I am so happy for everyone that was satisfied with their orders. For me, it was a nightmare 🙁 I ordered three boxes: shoes, accessory, and a clothing box. Well, I got the shoes and the clothing item, but no accessory. They simply forgot to include it, and now, since they are sold out, I am pretty much out of luck for the accessory… Then I opened the shoes (super cute summertime flats!), tried them on, and was like “uh, that’s not my size”. I got an 8.5 instead of 7.5!! Seriously, that’s 2 out of 3 that got screwed up. I was so irate and called them, but the girls that answered the calls (I called twice, once for the accessory missing, and the other time for the wrong shoe size, since I did not realize that was also the issue originally) were so sweet that I could not yell at them. They will be refunding for the missing accessory box, and for the wrong shoe size, and offered to let me keep the shoes to see if I can swap them. And so I will. Great customer service, but bad packing jobs… Oh well.

    • So sorry things didn’t go well, It’s tough when you like what you got but can’t use it. At least you’d have something to laugh at if you hated it.

  10. I received a beautiful form fitted wool coat. Although a large, the two front edges are 4 inches apart! I’d have to lose 20-30 pounds to get this coat to close! What a bummer. I may put it on Ebay…

  11. Wow! Great fun! I hope I luck out and get in on it the next time they do this. I got TWO winder coats, one a Jessica Simpson hip length thick weave wool type blend, very nice quality in a great red.

The second coat is a mid calf length burgundy wool like blend, sort of like hounds tooth pattern, also thick and warm, brand name Azalea, which I was not able to find online, maybe Burlington? It has a large faux fur collar that is removable.
It’s sort of like this one, but with a larger collar and longer length.

Also a summer dress, thin, that looks too small but we’ll see. Then knee length brown boots which fit at the shoe but my calves are way too big for boots like this, and a pair of adorable Victorian style boot/shoes which are a little tight but I’d kill myself wearing them anyway because I haven’t worn heels in years. I figure I got $2-300 usable value for sure!!!!! Too bad the temp is in the 70s here already.

    • I am sure winder coats are great, but I actually got winter coats.
I am getting an additional $10 worth of fun just seeing what everybody else got too!

  12. Hey! I just received my box and got a lovely blue and black dress!!! ( I love it! The fit is very flattering, but a bit low cut which is fine as I can put a black tank top underneath. I really wish I got more boxes now. 🙁 Thank you for giving us the heads up and thanks again for all the comments to order up a size! 🙂

    • Dress looks white and gold to me 😉

  13. OH LORD, I got a red gingham circle skirt with suspenders and I can’t stop laughing at it. Maybe I’ll cut it up and use it as a picnic table cloth. Bummed but I knew it was going to be a huge risk. I would have been really surprised if I would have gotten something cool.

    • I think I would totally wear that skirt. I love gingham.

    • I felt the same way when I got a bright pink duster sweater made with yarn plus this weird looking pink feathery thread sticking out everywhere to give it texture. I think I’m going to make it into a catnip filled pillow for my cats, it’s super soft. I bought 3 things, I think this is the best strategy because $30 isn’t too high for one great find so your odds go up a little because you’re not throwing all your risk into one item. But I could totally see not doing this again because of the risk- it was fun though!

  14. I got my apparel one today and was so excited (it’s been sitting at USPS for a couple days). I ended up getting this dress.
It will be great for Easter time as well as days I just want to spend it the sun. I was so excited to find out that it was worth $129. Not something I would have picked out for myself but I definitely can see myself wearing it a lot this Spring! (Once it finally stops snowing.)

  15. Just got mine and man I cleaned up! Got a $120!!! coat, a pair of tan ankle boots that retail for almost $40, and a really pretty necklace. (Got one of each type). I also ordered two other clothing bags in a second order, but haven’t gotten them yet. Best steal ever.

  16. I’m so so so SOOO bummed I missed out. Everything was already sold out before I could get there. I so hope they put out more stylish surprise boxes! Is there a way to know when they’ve been released other than going to the Modcloth site every 5 minutes?

  17. I got 2 dresses. One is a strapless green lace with tiny sparkly gold polka dots and the other is a tight black velvet sheath, with some mesh areas. Theres a floral burn out pattern in the black velvet too. I love them both, but the black doesn’t fit! I hope I get off the swap waitlist soon because it’s REALLY cute. I got a pair of burgundy booties with gold zippers and a pair of heels in which the toe is cream and the heel is burgundy and the straps wrap around your ankle. I love both pairs! The heels aren’t too terribly high either. I was hoping for clothes a little less formal, but overall I’d call it a win even if the one dress doesn’t fit.

  18. Although it was fun, mine was a bust! I got a cerulean blue wiggle dress with ruffles that cascade down the front, cap sleeves, and a black elastic waist belt with gold hardware to match. It’s from the brand Tropical Wear, who makes those adorable Soda Fountain dresses that are so flattering, so I’m guessing the value is around $47. It’s cute, but I’m not big on ruffles, and it’s too big for me! Undecided whether to consign or put up for trade.

  19. I really lucked out! I got a fantastic maxi dress that’s a darker yellow on the bottom (slightly gauzy) with a black/white tank top that has a small cut out at the small of the back. Similar to this:
Then I got a pair of earrings, rounded with a minty green center and good surround and a chunky necklace with clear baubles, not too big and can go with anything!
Such a great deal fir only $24! Wish I had grabbed a few more apparent 🙂

  20. Ok I just got my box and I feel like I totally lucked out! I got a lace BB Dakota dress in petal pink (I think retail was $99 on it)
My shoe surprise was a pair of rocket dog Moto style booties in a grey brown color. Both things I totally would have picked for myself!

  21. I got adorable shoes, but unfortunately they are too big 🙁 so they’ll be swapped. I also got an adorable summer dress, it’s skirt is red & the top has a cute floral print! I love it & can’t wait to wear it when it gets hot out! I can’t really find the price on either, but the dress made the $24 worth it & hopefully I can swap the shoes for something great

  22. I got a great pair of brown knee high boots which makes up for the multicolored brown spaghetti strap dress I also received. Actually, it might be a nightgown. It’s short, thin material, and has light padding in the bra, so I am not sure. Can’t find it on the website. Will be putting it up for swap once I get off the wait list.

  23. Liz, I got the same shoes as you! The Chelsea strap shoes, but mine are black. I love them! I also got the most hideous skirt that is long, blue, and looks like it’s got the night time stars all over it. The shoes were totally worth it for me though!

  24. As mentioned before, I bought one apparel and one accessory. I got a Steve Madden Diagonal Alley Coat that was originally $140. Unfortunately it’s a bit small but hopefully by next winter it’ll fit (as feared, it’s a little too small). I was hoping a little for something I could wear now–I’m so sick of winter!!! But overall it was a great buy!

The necklace I got is so ugly that it’s funny!! I got a necklace very similar to this $35 necklace currently on the ModCloth website. The one I got is the same design, which isn’t really my style, but the one I got has totally different colors and is much, much uglier than the one at the above link! The one I got has a few different shades of teals, green, yellow, red, pink, a few shades of beige, and light blue… Seriously.

  25. Got some amazing knee high brown boots. I had needed some all winter and could never find the perfect pair!! Also a mustard dress that may be too small for me vut is super cute. If it doesnt fit itll go onto the swap site!!

  26. If they really restocked, I’m gonna be grumpy.

They cancelled my stylish surprise apparel (in large) two days ago, saying the supply could not fit the demand and they sold more than they should have. They sent me an email with a coupon. Not as much fun.

  27. I got a really cute C. Luce dress and a pair of boots that I listed on the swap site – they didnt fit. So fun!

  28. Mine is still several states away, thanks to Fedex sloooowpost….but I’m excited to see yours!!! And happy to see that there is a swap swite already!

  29. My box was a total bust! 🙁 I ordered two of the clothing ones and one shoe. I got a green skirt in a really bizarre print (green with black polka dots and white bows printed all over it) and a dress that is a red/black/white plaid that I can only think of PJ pants when I look at it. I haven’t even bothered to try either of them on as I know that I will never wear them.

As for the shoes, they are a taller boot and could be cute if they weren’t two different colors. They are black about 2/3 of the way up and then the top is a light tan color that just looks silly. I am slightly tempted to bring them to a show repair place to see if they could just remove the top part and make them a shorter black boot, but I don’t know if it is worth the money.

    Disappointed for sure. 🙁

    • *shoe repair

    • Mine was a bust too. I got 2 clothing ones – a sweater with polka dots and a bowtie, then a shirt with random buttons completely out of place. I am thinking our boxes are the reason for the no return policy. 🙁

    • I think I got the same dress as you (the brand on mine is Stop Staring). I was hopeful when I opened the package but once I put it on, I feel like the print is a little much and I shouldn’t have sized up… For $10, I will try to make it work. Maybe with a wide black belt to break up the pattern.

  30. bahh….all they had left was size small when I saw this yesterday, and i’m usually like a 6 so I tend to lean medium, but can fit into a small if there’s some stretch. i’ll be really sad if nothing fits. =( but luckily all my friends are smaller than me, so I guess I will at least gain some gifts!

  31. I’m really hoping mine gets here today (Its been sent to USPS). I have an event to go to this weekend & it would be nice to have a new dress or shoes.

  32. Do they have these surprise boxes often? Because for the price you pay, I think what you get is definitely worth the “unknown” risk. I didn’t buy any because I wasn’t sure what to expect, but now I’m wishing I’d gotten in on it.

Oh, well, more time to decide exactly what ModCloth clothing size is appropriate for me (I’m between sizes for most brands). As for shoes, I’m a pretty classic size 7 and most brands fit quite well. I will be getting in on this next time for sure.

    • Looks like they’ve restocked in several sizes. Good luck.

      • By the time I got there, only small was left…

  33. I feel super lucky! I got a pair of calf-length light brown boots with laces all the way up ( also zippered on side) and a great simple spaghetti strap dress in a great burnt orange color. I’ll totally wear both things!

  34. I ordered 3 apparel as everything else was sold out, but my order is still listed as “pending.”

    • Ahhh me too! It’s driving me BONKERS!!

  35. I recommend wearing a self adhesive bra. Target sells them for around $25 up to a full C cup (you can squeeze a D set in there though). also has a self adhesive front only bra that works great for under $20. Perfect for this kind of dress. It’s either that or a convertible bra that connects at the low, low back.

  36. I paid the $4 shipping because I really didn’t have clothing budget left for myself. I purchased 2 apparel items (the accessories were sold out or I would have picked a couple of those). I hope I don’t get that crazy pink dress, but I do hope I get the yellow one! I didn’t order shoes because I have tendonitis and have a hard time with heels. I love those blue ones you got, though. For $24, I only need to like 1 item!

  37. Gosh darn it! I wish mine would get here!!! Great shoes and the dresses are adorable! I hope I’m as lucky. Mine is supposed to arrive on Saturday!

  38. I am LOVING that pink dress. That is beautiful! You’re lucky you got it when it was available!!!

  39. I got some amazing, beautiful shoes from Poetic License ($140!!). I also got 4 awesome clothing items, but I will only wear 2 probably. I’d love to swap! Please take me off the wait list for swapping!!!

  40. I got the shoes and clothes stylish surprise, but like others mine won’t be here until Monday. I can’t believe I didn’t think of getting more for free shipping, because I hate paying shipping too! I soo hope I get something like your boots.

  41. I got mine today. I ordered one apparel and one shoe. After reading other peoples comments i was worried about the size, but i got the size i normally wear and it fit great. I got a blue dress, its like a Easter blue (if that makes sense) I wouldn’t have normally bought it, but i can wear it to work or church. And i got some suede tennis like shoes. I don’t know how to describe them. They are cute! I am pleased and will definitely do this again if the opportunity comes up.

  42. I love the Qupid boots you got! Can’t wait to get my shoes!

  43. They canceled my order because they oversold the apparel one, so I’m super bummed out. I love both of the dresses, they are so pretty.

  44. I adore the pink dress! I’ll be getting my size small box soon, if the pink doesn’t work for you maybe we could make a swap 😉

  45. Hmm maybe I should’ve gotten more so I could have the free shipping! Mine aren’t here yet, and maybe I made a mistake in getting two clothing items, since everything I usually LIKE is sold out in my size. I love all those shoes, I hope my pair is cute too.

  46. Love the dress, the t sttap shoes look like something my great grandmother would wear though

    • They are retro styled, for a 30s-49s look. They actually look chic with the right dress or dress pants. You must have a with it granny!

  47. That Tulle dress is super cute!!!! Love the print. According to my tracking info, mine won’t get here until Monday. I’m super excited.

  48. I am really worried about sizes, even more so when I see what nice things you got. I will be so bummed if I love it but can’t fit in it. Free shipping got me too – three apparel and two shoes. They should be here tomorrow or Friday!

  49. This is such a great deal- I can’t believe you got such high quality items for $50!
Mine is not supposed to arrive until Saturday, I’m jealous of you girls!

  50. How cute is that Tulle dress?!??!?!

I ordered one apparel and one accessory surprise. I think I might get them tomorrow, but I am worried about the apparel size since I wasn’t aware they ran small… Sooooo nervous…
