Julep Golden Mystery Box Review - August 2013

Every month Julep sets up a “Secret Store” for their subscribers who didn’t skip their Maven box that month. The items in the store are usually at deep discount, and sometimes items you can’t normally buy at This month they added one extra treat to the Secret Store – a Golden Mystery Box with a value of $100-$200. I couldn’t pass this one up!

Julep Nail Color in January – Value $14

These are all perfect-for-fall shades, so I’m very happy with the polishes in this box!

Julep Golden Mystery Box Review - August 2013

Oxygen Nail Treatment – Value $18

SPF 30 Hand Cream – Value $28

Verdict: I think every mystery box I’ve purchased from Julep has been on the low side of the value range. I picked up this box hoping it would be heavier, oh well! Fortunately the Julep mystery boxes are almost always a good value to me even though I have yet to get a top value box. I paid $30 for this box and I’ll use everything included, so I’m happy! What version of the Golden Mystery Box did you get? Were you happy with your products?

  2. I got version 4.

    12 nail polishes
    Jane – Bronze gold glitter
Layne – Pale, pale baby pink
Bunny – White with gold shimmer
    Drew – Hot pink
Anne – Lilac (almost the same as the tissue paper!)
Sheryl – Gold with gold shimmer
    Alfie – Dusty dark lavender
    Maria – Dusty silvery pink/rose
    Fina – Dusty steel blue
    Coco – Rusty brown
    Nan – Orange-ish salmon
    January – Bright red

Hair ties (pink, glittery silver, black)

    Oxygen Treatment

    SPF Hand Cream

Taffy (which I gave to the boyfriend. I don’t like salt water taffy).

    I LOVE this box!

    • How much did you pay for your Mystery Box? (12 polishes is a lot!) I’ve been a Julep Maven for a few months now & I check EVERY email I get from them. I NEVER recieved any info on this Mystery Box (for August) I’m quite interested in the next one & which one I should purchase.

  3. My box was the same as well, but also with different colors. Hair ties were fallish…mauve, black and mini-animal print. My polish colors were a little more on the summer side…Sheryl, Layne, Drew, Bunny…although Sheryl and Drew will work well in the fall too. I’ve only been doing Julep for a few months, so although the value may not been as high as I’d hoped, I was happy with what was in the box.

  4. Wish I did this!!! When I wanted to they were of course were sold out!! I won’t wait next time. Enjoy ladies who received!!

  5. I got the same box as you (version 2) except my hair ties were darker colors, black brown and gray. I was happy with all of the products and don’t really care about the value as long as it exceeds the $30 I paid for it. I’ve been looking for a new hand cream so excited to try that out and also the nail treatment! 🙂

  6. I got Version 3. I will only use the oxygen nail treatment and the hair ties. I don’t like any of the nail colors (but I love yours Liz).
I always get the small version, too. I think this is my last mystery box.

  7. I’m so glad I didn’t end up buying this mystery box, because I would have been so disappointed if I received a box similar to yours. I also agree that Julep should value their boxes using the Maven price instead of the retail one. Most people will sign up regardless because they want to save money.

  8. Not sure if mine was a mistake or not, but I received 14 polishes in my box! It was like Christmas! I am new to julep, so I didn’t have any of the colors they sent me. I also received the other things everyone else got, too ( hand lotion, nail treatment, earrings). Not sure how I received this one?! It was awesome!

    • Congrats! You got a great mystery box!!!

  9. My package for this and anglea and etta was stolen off my porch. I sure hope the thieves like their mystery box since Julep and the post office are doing nothing to help me out. First time this ever happened in about seven years. 🙁

    • I’m sorry to hear that Heidi ): that is the worst.

The PO will never do anything about stolen mail. I had a $100 birthday present stolen from a friend stolen this year!

Small consoluation, but you can dispute the charge with your CC company as you never received the product. That way you’re at least not paying for stuff you never got.

      • Thanks Kyuu. That’s terrible about your friend too, that’s pretty lame going around stealing mail like that. I contacted Julep about an hour ago and they are supposed to refund me for the mystery box and ship out Etta and Angela to me again but it hasn’t shown up in my Julep account yet (I’m impatient I guess). I spoke to the supervisor at the PO this morning and he said they aren’t going to leave any more boxes for me anymore that won’t fit in the mailbox, I will just get a slip saying there’s a package for me to pick up.

  10. I answered this in the other post about the Secret Store but I got version 3 which includes:

    Oxygen Nail Treatment $14.40
SPF 30 Hand Cream (Full Size) $12.99
Nail colors: Bunny, Layne, Sheryl, and Drew $11.20 each (Sheryl $7.99)
    Belina Hair Ties ???
    Salt Water Taffy

I also think Julep should really consider valuing these boxes using the Maven price instead of the retail one because only Mavens can purchase this box. (And only if you bought the month’s box, so even more exclusive.)

I’m just happy I didn’t get any colors I have and that they would be something I would wear.

  11. I’m going to contact Julep tomorrow. I got an e-mail saying they shipped my box out on August 2, but the tracking info is still stuck on electronic shipping received. This is the same problem I had with my lip factory. 🙁

  12. I received the same box you did! Love the colors. My only wish is that they considered the box value in terms of Maven prices instead of full pricing since only Mavens could order this box. If you calculate in Maven pricing, the value is less than $100 especially since the hand cream is on sale for $12.99 right now and so is Fina at $7.99. So altogether the value really is closer to $77.98.

Either way it’s still good value, so not complaining too much. Really wanted the oxygen nail treatment and I’ve been looking for hand cream with SPF for awhile. I’ve tried L’Occitane’s but the smell is way too potent for me. This is perfect!

  13. I received the same box as well and I love the colors! Very fall and winter! The hand lotion and oxygen polish I will also use too. While I happy with my box, I wish there was a little surprise for this box, a little more golden sparkle from a golden box. However, I am definitely looking forward to the first fall box in September and hopefully it’s exciting!

  14. I got the same box number version as you did minus the hair ties. I really like the hair ties 🙁 do you think they just forgot to put them in mine? ‘Cause the colors and products and candy are identical to yours.

    • Think you were supposed to have received either earrings or hair ties. I would contact Julep. Their customer service is wonderful from my experience.

  15. I got version 2 as well. Kinda disappointed there wasn’t something really special for their anniversary in it. Nail colors are pretty.

  16. I got the same you did, just different polish colors. Love yours more! I’m excited about the hand cream and the nail treatment – those are both items that I wouldn’t pick up on my own, so I was glad to see them in the box. And while the polish colors I got weren’t my fave, they’re still nice – more of red, golden colors – and they’ll still get used. Though at this rate, I’m running out of nail polish storage!!
